Zippo is a great company. I've sent two in for repair, hinge work, and asked for pipe inserts. They did the repairs, sent them back to me, with the pipe inserts, old inserts and 4 new flints in a wax pack. All it cost me was $2.35 for postage. 2 week turnaround.

Great video John. I've carried 1 of my 2 Zippo lighters daily for 30+ years and have the same daily routine for fuelling my lighter. Neither of my lighters have the pipe insert and I've had no issues lighting my pipe. Thanks for sharing

Quick tip: the flints in most disposable lighters can be used in your Zippo. Very little of the flint is used when the fuel is spent and it takes less than a minute to extract the flint. The hardest part is making sure the spring doesn't sent the flint flying across the room never to be seen again.

I love your videos. Some things I have discovered about Zippos are that the new formula Zippo fuel doesn't have as much flavor or as much odor to taint the tobacco as the older formula. And what little taste there is only lasts for as long as the flame is held to the pipe bowl. If you stuff additional cotton into the insert, you will not have to fill it as often. Also, when you come home and are done with the lighter for the day, take the lighter out of your pocket and put it in a little zip-lock bag and squeeze the air out. This will cut down on fuel evaporation. Finally, keep two spare flints between the felt pad and the cotton inside the insert.

I may have already commented on this one, but you got me goin' here. I just tore through 6 boxes in my basement looking for a 2" X 2" brownboard box that hid my uncle's Zippo from 1967, which is when he started smoking a pipe in college at Boston University. I gotta tell ya - I haven't held this lighter in my hands since around my 21st birthday when he gave it to me. I just went through and inspected the lighter, ran out to get a pack of flints and some fluid (the wick still looked fine after I cut off the charred tip). That aroma - the smell of a Zippo lighter. Ambrosia. This was the missing link from my olfactory's memory of my uncle smoking his pipe. A good man. Even the distinctive metallic "ting!" that sounds when you flip the cap open brings back memories. Glad I watched this 8 times. lol...you helped bring back a great memory, and another piece added to my pipe arsenal. Good bye, disposables.

My story's pretty much the same. My Dad used Zippo's for his cigarettes and the smell & sound take me back. I acquired all his Zippo's back in the 80's and sent a few out to Zippo to be refurbished. Now they're all I use.

Great Video John, My love affair with Zippo started in highschool and carried through Nam, and all of my working life and now my retired life. I would say its been about 50 years now, and they have never let me down. I am using the pipe insert in mine now since my doctor knocked me off of cigs. Its like a timex watch, it keeps on ticking. See Ya next time. :)

Another flint tip: I always drop 1 or 2 under the insert (that you lift to add lighter fluid) and on top of the internal cotton. When the flint goes, I always know that I have an extra flint there, and can even visually verify when I top off the lighter fluid 😊
@MrDavidMoriarty

Just switched to zippo myself. I keep finding that if you shorten the wick and don't fill it with the insert completely upside down, it usually doesn't have too much fuel spewing towards the wick and causing the taste to come through the tobacco. Splitting the short wick works well too. That was a Dagner tip in a video he did a while back and it works like a charm!

I rarely detect the fluid taste unless I'm thinking about it. Using the Zippo is all about habit. I fuel it each day and keep spare flints in it. Very reliable.

When I am indoors, I like using my Kiribi butane lighter for my 1st light and my following lights. I then when my bowl starts to smoke down to about a half bowl I usually switch to my Pipe Zippo for my relights if needed. The Zippo flame reaches the tobacco better IMO. Yes, I found out early on that when the Zippos striking wheel locks up it's time to change the flint. For me, that has always solved the problem.

A cowboy friend keeps his in his top shirt pocket (always facing upwards, no spills). He has a little trick. Again, he’s a cowboy and the lighter would occasionally slip from his pocket, sometimes God only knows where. His trick? He wraps a rubber band around the body, not the top. The rubber prevents the generally smooth metal from allowing the slip.

I even picked up a zippo holster from a jumble sale and that works really well too, means it's not taking up any pocket space. Before I saw a Zippo pipe lighter I imagined that it would be very different from a standard Zippo. It is not. Instead of small holes in the chimney there is one big hole into which the petrol soaked wick projects so that the sucker gets the full flavour of the fuel. At least with a standard Zip it is possible to set a high flame so more of the fluid burns off. I prefer Swan matches for a pipe but sometimes 2/3rds down the bowl a flame thrower does come in handy. I only have two Zippos now - my first 20 yr old plain s/s, and a modern black one with logo. The innards appear identical but for some reason my old one seems better quality - the flint beds in smoother so maybe the difference is in the hardness of the spark wheel or maybe the strength of the flint spring...? Or maybe it's my imagination... nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Your mentioning of matches being moved to different locations,reminds me of Stop and Shop in my area, They are always "resetting" the isles,moving products and removing other products entirely. Have a few Zippo's but don't use them. Like to collect their interesting designs.Most of the time, prefer Diamond Matches or Bic lighters,even though there is a Cloibri Pipe lighter my desk. Hwy Matches, is there a proper length the wick should be when using zippos, especially with non pipe insert zippos? I've got my dads old zippo I've been using but the length is just above the top of the chimney. I'm not quite sure if this is too long or I should trim it down shorter?

That is (I think) personal preference, but somewhere I got the idea to keep the wick in the chimney. Recently I saw a video where the guy had a huge flame since the wick was out so much and he said he likes it that way, so there you go.

Great video as always John! What are your thoughts about the Vaseline trick? That is run a tiny bead with one's finger around the cartridge before placing it back in the zippo - creates a seal that prevents fuel evaporation...

Hello Matches! I have had experience with Zippo regarding the pipe insert and have found them too be very accommodating, even going as far as to send me one upon request along with a spare regular insert.

Hey, thanks for the vid. I just switched to zippos myself and would like to try the pipe insert. Can you really just mail your zippo to the factory with a request for the pipe insert and they'll mail you back both your original plus the pipe insert free? Also, what kind of cube cut are you smoking? I'm a huge burley fan! I love Haunted Bookshop and OJK! Thanks again.

Ahhhh, a HB fan! Visit the Zippo website for mailing instructions and they'll take care of the insert, although I've become quite comfortable using the standard insert with pipe smoking. I get my cube cut from 4Noggins and am not sure of their source or the exact type. Thanks for coming by!

I bought the Zippo for pipe, but it is difficult for me to light it well, unlike other lighters, with the flame facing upwards ... is it necessary to aspirate much stronger?
@Matches860
@Matches860 4 жыл бұрын
You need to hold the lighter sideways so the chimney hole is over the bowl and yes, you will need to suck the flame down to the tobacco. I have found the regular insert to work as well or better than the pipe insert.
@francoa5938
@francoa5938 4 жыл бұрын
thanks for the answer, I agree that the classic insert is better ... I used all the lighters, and the matches, but I have to say that the Zippo pipe system disappointed me maybe for this lighter I load the too-pressed pipe, and it turns on the tobacco very little, maybe I should lighten the pressure of the tobacco in order to suck better..mah!

Great video and timely, too, because I just purchased a Zippo w/pipe insert. My question is about using Zippos on pipes with deeper bowls. It seems from my limited experience that the light just won't reach the bottom of a half smoked bowl in a larger style pipe. Maybe it's just my lack of skills, but how do you manage to relight deeper bowls? Thanks and regards!
@Matches860
@Matches860 10 жыл бұрын
Ahhh, great point! Thinking about your comment, I do believe I angle the lighter so the chimney is pointed downward and my hand holding the lighter brought up slightly. I think you'll find it will even light the bottom.

Mark Theriault I also just noticed (as I relit a bowl bottom) that I also tilt the pipe bowl towards the tilted lighter...that should do it for you!

I save my used wooden matches and take 'em to the cottage in the summer and use 'em to get a fire started. Makes for good tinder. You know, I've still yet to use a zippo. I like the idea, just never got around to it. The only thing I've ever used Ronsons for is cleaning up guitars. Lighter fluid is the best for that. Good chat. So you've used matches and zippos... what about soft flame butane lighters?
@Matches860
@Matches860 10 жыл бұрын
I love a nice butane, until it runs out of gas. I've never had luck refilling no matter what. Good idea to reuse the wood matches, that would make me feel better about using them. Like anything else, carrying a Zippo takes getting used to.

I actually just sent in my zippo got destroyed about a month ago and they said they’d replace it as for inserts a year ago when I sent like 5 zippos in at once they still sent back the old insert back however now more recently I’ve heard they’ve started to just throw out the old ones and just send a new one they’ll send you the old one back too still but not unless you mention you want it back in the note

Thanks or that update, there isn't much sense in sending the old insert back, but I always thought it was a nice gesture on their part.

there is a hidey hole in the felt in the bottom of the lighter for a spare flint. sounds like you have flints for days, though. my favorite is an "armored" zippo i bought to keep in my pocket while welding. zippo fans are always confused by it :) it's just stamped thicker.
@Matches860
@Matches860 7 жыл бұрын
I had done some research after doing this video and found that Zippo did not list this hole as flint storage. Looking into it further, I found out (reading fueling directions) the hole is to insert a bent paper clip or similar piece in order to facilitate lifting the felt pad for fuel. I know, it shocked me too!

Matches860 i understand, a briefcase containing flints is also sure to have paperclips for fashioning rudimentary tools.. Bet you could even make a bow to shoot "flaming arrow" matches at the gremlins ;)
