It takes a lot of work on these newer 9L and 13.5L Deere engines just to blow some wind! Vari-Cool fan drive maintenance is super important to keep these high horsepower tractors running nice and cool. In this video we tear into the fan drive of a John Deere 8310R. This iT4 9L engine uses a variable speed fan drive that is hydraulically controlled and if not maintained properly, it can get expensive fast.

Zeth - there's is no chance that I'll ever work on a John Deere tractor however I find myself totally immersed in your videos. You're a true professional and clearly are not only talented but also an asset to Sloan. Your approach and explanations, again while I will unlikely be working on a Deere tractor, are informative and educational. Something that will help me. Thank you, and continued success. Looking forward to future videos.

Having commenting on a previous video about my experience years ago at a Case/IH dealership in northern Iowa I want to thank you again for the videos you make. I've move on to being a Fixed Op's Director for a large automotive group back home in Kentucky but you always bring back great memories for me. I still have my completely stocked Snap-on tool box in my garage. Here's a time stamp point of reference..In 1993 we were the first dealer for Case/IH to install a yield monitoring system on what was then a state of the art 2188 combine. We used a rudimentary pressure plate at the top of the elevator that transferred data to a pcmcia card docked in the cab. Bear in mind..We were strictly with DOS at the time..ahh good times. Keep doing what you are doing young man. Looking forward to watching this channel grow.

Zeth, great video. Perhaps you might have a part two to explain why it has to be a somewhat complicated fan drive. Most people will not realise how much horse power is involved in turning that fan and how it can have an effect on fuel consumption. We need the sales dream, we have seen the nightmare ! Appreciate you doing these videos and showing more in depth a lot of this tech stuff, both good and bad. Lot of info. Even though there is a relief valve on them, could it still be due to overgreaseing ruining the seal, and more debris gets in? Seems like bushings in this regard isnt a good thing. Good to hear JD has the improved kit available.

Great stuff. I think your videos should be mandatory watching for JD designers. As a retired Mechanical Engineer, I am embarrassed how complex and difficult these machines are to work on. Warren over at Western Truck and Tractor repair is also a great testimony as to the lack of practicality in JD design. A good lesson in the old Detroit 671 series is in order.

Zeth , I enjoy watching your video's. They are very informative! Just a little advice from an old John Deere mechanic. When your pressing bearings, always press on the race that is being fitted and not the whole bearing. The chatter of pressing will put dents in the races from the balls. I learned the hard way after having water pump failures shortly after a rebuild, because I was pressing the bearing in by the shaft and not the outer race. Keep up the good work!

Your videos on repair and maintenance of all these motors, pullies, shafts and mechanism assemblies are very interesting to watch and learn useful stuff, adding to my basic knowledge of the principles of all them working together. Greetings from Kyiv, Ukraine!

I notice today that very few bolts are lubricated when fitted back. I have always lubricated bolts as its easier to remove them next time, (of course some applications require lock tite). I have never had a issue with bolts coming loose in service. This was a very interesting maintenance procedure, I always find it interesting that manufacturers have different spec parts for the same application, for example the bushings. Yes, tight spaces are a challenge for big guys, but then heavy parts are easier for you to lift ! Keep safe and enjoy the green machines
