Hmmm... for the most part I appreciate her statements/thoughts on being critical of self & changing your support system to get ahead. However, to say you don't like when ppl focus on identifying if your Afro-Latina or the color of ones skin YET you have no problem with speaking on or identifying the problem of sexism...???...seems a bit hypocritical.

@@Dominican1923 she doesn’t want to speak about racism, and that’s how she was raised. She knows she’s Afro-latina. Her experience and teaching is that those who speak on it feel inferior or there’s something wrong with them. So to come to USA having that attitude that many black Americans speaking out against racism have issues but getting roles about the black American women experience seems odd to me. Yes she can play the role (because they cast her), but it’s the “they (black Americans) keep speaking in racism, when they should focus on bettering ourselves”. Yo! We’ve been educated and progressive. Her mindset is very “pull yourself up by your boot straps” yet, the industry she’s in has been changed by black Americans knocking down doors and walls by speaking out against racism

I like Zoe, and I genuinely feel like her heart means well. But I feel like Zoe wishes so bad that we lived in this fictional Marvel Universe where prejudice doesn't exist, but it is not and never will be reality...or at least for her it won't, gosh must be nice to have long hair and speak Spanish. She says well this is just the way her mom raised her and her and her sisters don't talk about race because it makes them uncomfortable. That's the problem. She can't deliver a debate about issues like this because she was never taught how to.

Not once did I hear her deny anything about her racial background. She even spoke on and criticized the colorism in the Dominican Republic. And she's been vocal in her past about identifying as an Afro-Latino so I'm not sure where all the anger in the comments is coming from. I don't agree with her saying we should "just ignore it", because I think that actually makes things worse, but people acting like she sat up there denying her race or saying she's white are also wrong.

(I will not say African American because US real Americans are the natives, white and blacks have little to not American in them) She’s Dominican, why is that bad that she acknowledges it? In Latin America we do not identify ourselves as races, we do it with nationalities

I also think people forget that there is a difference between identifying as black, skin color wise, and black cultural wise. Being westafrican I wouldn't identify as black if I was in the States because of black also meaning AA. That my skin color is brown or black that's something that I don't find mention worthy. I identify with my culture which is either Ghanaian/Nigerian etc. not just ''black''. I kinda feel like Americans in general are very limiting when it comes to discussing race because they tend to ignore the understanding of someone's culture.

I concur with her on that my parents tried to protect me and my sisters from covert racism. Being of Cuban and Guyanese descent, and my mother being fairly brown complected, we got a lot of stairs. So when the conversation of race came up we would totally ignore it as a defense mechanism. However, As an adult I realize now i realize that that isn't very healthy and those conversations are very necessary.

This is not true, she did a interview in the Dominican republic where lady interviewing her in Spanish comment on how she identifies herself as. The lady tried to call her a "Trigueña/Tri-Racial" (a common term for folks with her skin tone or lighter complexion) however Zoe Saldana made it very clear she calls her selfs a "YO SOY SOY MUJERE NEGRA or IM AM A BLACK WOMEN!" The very fact that she even had to explain that in the Dominican republic where colorism is extremely high in common should tell you right there how she identifies herself as. Just because she doesn't follow a strict Americanized definition blackness doesn't mean she never identifies as a black woman

Two things, she's oblivious about U.S. racial politics and intersectionality as a concept. Both racism and sexism exist; one doesn't disappear for the other to occur. She brings up sexism because that's what she relates to and she's uncomfortable speaking on "race," but ignoring racism is why it remains taboo. Ironically, she wants to broach the "pink elephant" in the room. What if the majority of men want to ignore sexism? If you want to discuss one issue, you can't ignore the next because "you're not troubled by it," since there are people that are. I'm not troubled by my identity either, but am affected if profiled. This is why she was a wrong choice for Nina Simone, because she doesn't seem to understand the black American identity which shaped the singer. I get that she's speaking from her experience, and it's hella great that she has healthy self-determination because of how her mother "protected" her and her sisters. However, as a result, she constantly flip flops and is insulated. She trivializes racism in saying that "people have lives," when some people's lives have been taken because of how their race was profiled. Sway and the co-hosts should drop passively cosigning and discussing negritude with her because she didn't inherit the brand of racial politics that black Americans have. So, there's a cultural disconnect. She makes good points about focusing on progress and changing support systems, but her argument's problematic because for progress to be made then impediments(e.g.racism) need to be addressed

What she said on race is true, but very few people acknowledge it. Racism does exist, but its not everything for some people. You need to be aware, but not make it everything!
@RealDealy
@RealDealy 7 жыл бұрын
Or weak people. No offense! You see, most nonwhites only deal with whites during work time, and the police, that means the times you are chilling, you can focus on other things to build yourself up. If you just keep focusing on racism, even in your off time, you won't make any gains(unless you are making up plans to combat racism), which is what racists want you to do. Their is a science to it. You can't build while being destroyed or fighting. This is why its important to have some people in your group away from talking about racism all day, they can help build the community up. While they are doing that, you have some who are making plans to fight racism with proper techniques. This is how you kill racism. Being angry all the time is just burned up energy that gets you nowhere, which is what they want. You think it's a coincidence they make sure you see mostly negative things about yourself? It's a science to this conquering shit!
@tbglover
@tbglover 7 жыл бұрын
Not make it everything!! That would be easy to do if jobs were less likely to hire you or give you an interview based on having a "black or ethnic" name. It'd be easy to do if people of color black people most of all weren't targeted by the police. It'd be easy to do if being a person of color makes you less likely to do a loan from a bank. But unfortunately these issues have been going on for way to long with no end in sight.
@RealDealy
@RealDealy 7 жыл бұрын
I see you didn't read my reply! I'm talking abut on your chill time. I know people who make everything about race, the shit isn't healthy, and keeps you from seeing life in a way bigger then what our conquerors want. There goal is to keep us in a box, and it is working. If you look at youtube, the only black people who make videos about things other then black issues, are blacks who don't even acknowledge race or try to do everything that whites do There is nothing wrong with that, but you can tell they are just dodging race, and ACTING like whites. They talk with a nasal tone, they date white women/men, and tend to say things that racists whites say(not all whites). The problem is that isn't reality, and those people will get their wake up calls. You can acknowledge racism, but when that is all you do, you won't see what life has to offer, and you put yourself into a box that others made for you. I been there, and I'm not going back.

Zoe has no business speaking about her ethnicity and her views on race in this time and age. There are millions of black latinos in Latin American and in the U.S. period. It's very common. There's nothing to discuss. She is a latina. I bet if she were African American they wouldn't ask her these kinds of questions. And why is there so much negativity towards her being black and latin? The reason she is successful is because she's talented, smart and classy. And of course they love her multi-ethnic look because she can play a variety of roles (a black woman, middle eastern, a latina, biracial, etc). I love how she ignores the negativity and insecurity. Sigue adelante!

Everyone that is an "other" in the entertainment industry gets asked these kinds of questions. It has nothing to do with Zoe being Latina. There are African Americans that get asked this question all the time...perhaps you don't recall when Oprah interviewed Raven Symone. She got called out for saying she doesn't go by labels. She was one of the first to be outspoken about it and African Americans got angry with her. Viola Davis has been asked these questions as well...it's across the board.

+ReneeDreams "other" people may have been asked racial questions but definitely not like Zoe's and not in every single interview. Of course an African American would get asked about their perception of race, being black in Hollywood etc, but definitely not at the constant and critical level Zoe gets it. It has to do with her ethnicity. She gets stoned from both sides of the fence.

+Sasha N. Santos....Zoe brought it all on herself because she goes back and forth on the issue. That is the only reason why people ask her about it more often than not. If she had been consistent in the last few years no one would care. I personally don't care what she considers herself. My issue with her was when she did the Nina Simone movie. Nina Simone was very unapologetically black and spoke out frequently during the Civil Rights Movement which is why she was so hated in America. She was so hated in America for being so vocal against racism that she moved o Europe. It was real hard for me to take her seriously playing Nina knowing how she really feels about race. Zoe fought for the role of Nina...it wasn't like it was just another "job" she was given. So knowing how hard she fought for that job, it even more so upset me that she does such a poor job of representing certain demographics. If she doesn't want to identify as an African American woman this is understandable - just don't accept roles that are of a person like Nina Simone. A very proud black woman from North Carolina. Zoe always trying to play both sides of the fence. I get it on one hand...she can't ruffle too many feathers because she has to keep getting jobs. But on the other hand...all she has to do is keep it real. Don't play on both sides of the fence...people don't respect that.

+ReneeDreams I completely agree with you. As a black latina I did not appreciate the way Zoe presents herself differently depending on what's "in". I notice that she does ping pong which I don't think is right. She's African American one day then latina the next. That behavior isn't right. And I agree with the Nina Simone role. If I were her I'd pass it up because 1st) I'm not African American I'm latina and 2nd) Nina was a talented American black woman. I really wish that a beautiful dark African American woman (well ethnicity doesn't matter) would play Nina. I didn't like the way she went after it and defended it. I wouldn't take it if I were her I wouldn't take it.

I have a love hate relationship with Zoe, for obvious reasons! But I am realistic about her situation, like most athletes and entertainers these people are in an industry were they are entertainment for everyone so they have to be careful about alienation of fanbase or they won't be very successful. Michael Jordan for instance would not own an NBA team and be a billionaire if he were vocal about certain issues. What needs to stop is the notion of this mythical race conversation where everything gets ironed out and all is forgiven. Not going to happen!! We are in someone else's house, when you in another man's house they make the rules. So if we don't like the rules of this house, we build our own house and make our own rules! Stop crying and bitching about motherfuckers that don't like us and won't every like us!

Just because your skin is dark does not mean you are apart of the African/Caribbean American community it is what it is people always want to be apart of the community when it’s convenient for them and I’m curious are you referring to yourself as Afro-Latino because your skin color or do you actually have African ancestry?

Sasha N. Santos bogus arguement. That is like saying, why would she marry white man when she knows nothing about European culture? If you know know anything about HOLLYWEIRD it is not about how many roles you can play. HOLLYWEIRD is very *Sumblimal*,*overexaggarated*, and *blatantly lying* like Gods of Egypt lol

So..CEO's, artist, and other fields of her choosing are mostly male; Therefore, sexism? That's poor logic. Why isn't she complaining about social work being mostly women? Nursing? Education? Biology? Sociology? All of these fields have a high quantity of women yet you never hear about "sexism" against males. That's because sexism isn't the reason why people CHOOSE to get into specific fields. Men, on average, tend to get into different fields than women, on average. That's just facts.

Because women are slowly climbing the ladder and are proving that they can do the work there is a bit of fear. Also, belief also plays are role as it relates to a women's place. Biblically women can be leaders of children and other women but not of men. So even though there is a separation of church and state the principal of the church does emerge on this issue.
