fun fact: I was born without an uvula so when I was first born, I was in the hospital for a while, and the doctor's had one made for me. But since it was man-made, it never grew with me, so I have a little 'v' shape at the back of my throat. okay that wasn't really a fun fact, but I thought I should share since I'm watching back old vlogs and you guys were talking about uvulas... :b

towns in the UK differ so much from towns in the US! Every town there appears like it has nice little streets with shops you can walk through and shop in, seems so lovely!

Maybe if Zoe ate better her health and immune system would improve. I just think she's poorly pretty often, eating bad also triggers panic attacks and anxiety. Hope you're feeling better soon Zoe

Yeah, in one of her blog articles she said that she tries to gain weight but she can't because she has a super fast metabolism so no matter what she eats, she won't gain weight and she can't exercise either because then she'll lose too much weight. Her health is pretty bad because of that :(

Once I was on a car journey and my mum and dad trusted me to carry a cake (well I wasnt carrying it it was sitting on my lap) and it was the start of the car journey and somehow I ended up sitting on the cake and the back seat of the car was all covered in cake

The dangly thing is called a tonsil and it helps fight germs but sometimes you get really sick from it wich is called tonsillitis.

It's a Uvula (you-view-la)! A remnant of fetal development if I remember correctly. Uvulapalatopharyngoplasty (you-view-la-pal-atto-fair-ingo-plasty) is for obstructive sleep apnea not caused by obesity! Hope that helps! -Dr. Braly (uh oh, I've put on my doctor's cap)

Actually, the uvula is for separation of the digestive and respiratory system. When food is in danger of getting into the respiratory system, it erects itself and closes the nasal opening in the back of your throat. This way, when you swallow, the food doesn't go up your nose all the time, and when you throw up, bolus doesn't come rushing out of your nose.

rockinstrawberries Actually, the epiglottis is what protects the bolus of food when swallowing from passing into the trachea and causing aspiration. The uvula, you're right though, does have a small function in helping to close off the nasopharynx and preventing regurgitation thru the nose. It is still formed as a remnant of fetal development. It's what in large part contributes to your gag reflex, innervated by the Vagus nerve. :) I'm an anesthesiologist, I stare at uvulae and epiglotti all day long! :)

It's pronounced you-view-luh and its main function is to work with the soft palate to block the nasal passage when you swallow (so you don't breathe and swallow at the same time). It is also used in some languages to produce guttural consonants, like the french "r" (when you pronounce Paris like the french do). Yes, I'm a nerd and proud of it! :)
