I finally got around to installing an iNav autopilot in the Nano Talon! Still have some tuning and configuring to do, but it has promise, especially because of the new 4S 3120mAh LiIon battery pack, which potentially promises up to 2 hours of flight time, out of only 523 grams of flying weight! There will be more on this one for sure!

Excellent work. I have mine running 3S with Samsung 25R's and I have passed 1Hr 20 minutes and landed with 3.1v/cell. I also ditched the stock drunken sailor stabiliser for a Hobbyeagle A3 Super II which is as good as any stabiliser can get, and added a KST 0.07 sec aileron servo, a Skylark GPS/osd, L9R with antenna's kept internal, and it is awesome.. it flies rock solid stable yet fully aerobatic performance with incredible roll/recovery rate, I've passed 5km and 6000 feet then cruised trimmed down for over half an hour without any throttle. Currently waiting for a mini split, and I can ditch the 808 and RC Swift and improve CD even more. I also made a brace for aileron pivot sleeves and run a 6v BEC, and 330Hz servo frequency. My AUW is 510g/530g (+808) and with the mini split will be 515. Totally love this plane, I haven't touched anything else since.. it just does everything, even thermals..

If you use a Taranis or any other OpenTX radio you can see up flight modes so that when you switch out of passthrough mode all the trims are turned to zero and when you switched back they are returned. I used this a lot a couple years ago with a motor glider so I could set separate trims for motor on, glide, flaps and crow.
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 6 жыл бұрын
That is an option too... but I think I prefer to let iNav know which values are a level trim, rather than relying on it to figure this out in the stabilized modes! :) But this could be useful in other applications... haven't though of it, thanks! :)

Great close ups, so very clear and in focus...I love iNAV, it worked brilliantly for me all last Summer. I thought you made hard work of the Camera and VTX wiring myself....The RAM pins will provide main Lipo voltage to both Camera and VTX which gives a standard 3 pin servo plug for both...? You need to use the M8N GPS Module....20 Sats...it's so much better and more reliable too. My favourite Mode to fly in is Horizon Mode combined with Altitude Hold, its really good for when you want to watch the scenery without having to watch the planes attitude all the while.
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 6 жыл бұрын
Haha, thanks! Will get to the flight modes when I am done making it fly level without them! :) As for the video and camera... not using the RAM on board for a reason - first, even though the Vtx can handle 4S, my Split is the first one, and it only takes 5v, and I certainly don't want to risk taking those from the FC, and having it lock out in flight due to the regs being overloaded; second, I do prefer to go via the Matek board, as it has a 3A reg for the 5v, and a 2A one for the 12v, and they are really well filtered, so video should be quite clean, and I don't have to use an additional LC filter! As for the GPS unit... since I want to be able to also connect my antenna tracker there from time to time, I can't use Ublox 8... besides... what I have in there now is a lot lighter... and has worked well so far! :)

Like your videos mate. One thing to note is the pitch to throttle setting in iNav is not just for flying wings, it is for all fixed wings. It does not pitch the plane down when throttle is applied, it increases throttle when the aircraft is pitched up so that speed is maintained and the plane does not stall. Also only active in autonomous modes.
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... I will look into this and perhaps run some more tests, but when I first installed this board in my Believer, this mix had the nasty effect of pitching down the plane every time I raise the throttle in any of the stabilized modes! It was pure luck that it didn't crash it a few times and I was able to recover the plane! Testing on the ground revealed exactly this - higher throttle, more down pitch!!! I understand your idea... but I am pretty certain it did not work like this for me!
@Lusby43
@Lusby43 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why you saw that pitching down effect, and I did see that video (great looking plane BTW!). There is discussion on github about how to calculate the additional thrust to compensate for pitching up in relation to this setting. I have checked the effect it has on climbing to min altitude when RTH is activated, and the increase in throttle while climbing appears to change with this setting. From the iNav wiki: nav_fw_pitch2thr 10 (default value) Amount of throttle applied related to pitch attitude in GPS assisted modes Keep up the great work ArxangelRC!!

Hmmm... I have been using it on a few other models as well, and I have not seen any issues with it yet! The home arrow is blinking in addition to not pointing to home... so it is possible the issue is not with the GPS unit! It has been working perfectly on my XK A1200 and on my Believer in terms of accurate positioning and home arrow direction, and RTH.

@ArxangelRC I dont understand, Where is the compass? and SDA SCL connection. I just see the gps and omnibus f4. The FC has no compass. How does it fly without compass?
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 6 жыл бұрын
It flies a lot better without the compass actually! You need a compass only on a copter, which will be stationary some of the time and the autopilot has no other way of determining heading. A plane is always moving, and the autopilot can calculate a very accurate heading from the GPS data, so you don't need a compass, which is just another complication on an already complex system. If I can I always choose to go without a compass on a plane, I have been getting much better results as far as auto modes are concerned.

@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 6 жыл бұрын
In my last test of the NT I did test RTH extensively, and it was working perfectly! If the V-tail mix works in one mode... there is no reason why it wouldn't work in the others. Perhaps the people having the problems have an issue with something else, and they blame it on the V-tail mix!

@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks... OK, will consider updating the firmware version, it is just that after releasing it a lot of people were reporting problems, which were actually non existent on 1.73, which I then had on my Believer, hence why I stuck with it here! :)
@pawanv86
@pawanv86 6 жыл бұрын
I suggest you to give set the pitch to +3° in iNAV. (Pitch gets reversed to Roll when you change the board orientation, check the live orientation after changes to verify) It'll help with keeping the plane straight during take offs without having to touch the elevator sticks.
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 6 жыл бұрын
My take off was in passthru mode, so giving any pitch compensations to iNav would not make a difference in this situation! When I am done with the trims I will see how it flies in the stabilized modes, and only then will know if it needs any corrections. Will probably start using the auto takeoff at some point, so that should take care of keeping the plane level! To be honest, on 4S the NT can take off vertically... so really not that worried about it dipping too much! :)

How did you get rssi? I have the exact same electronics, except for de receiver, x8r
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 6 жыл бұрын
The X8R, sadly, only outputs the RSSI on a pin, and the receiving pin on the Omnibus F3 Pro is not used for this anymore... so you can't really use it! It works for me because the XM+ can output the RSSI to a channel over the SBUS connection, which iNav can be setup to read! There is a way to do this same thing with the X8R via the Taranis menu, but it is sort of a workaround, the firmware for the X8R itself does not support it like on the XM+.

when soldering is required it is easier to just take a seperate strip of nickel. solder the wires on it and only after that spot weld it to your battery. Because even 5 secs of high heat will slightly damage the battery. And because you will end up with different battery qualities, the whole pack will degrade faster. I believe that you were using plated nickelstrips (usually sparks compared to pure nickel). Its fine to use them, but remember that a 0.15mm thick plated nickelstrip is most efficient at 4amps. You need to use at least 8 layers to handle 30A efficiently. I believe the Talon uses only +- 5-10amps at cruise speed. So 2 to 3 layers is an absolute minimum. Better use one single 0.30mm pure nickelstrip. BTW: For long range low amp UAV's I tested quite some different batteries. I find the Samsung 30q (15A) overall the winner.
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah... might have to get some thicker strips... I have soldered to cells before, and I don't even keep the soldering iron for 5 secs... less... I know it can damage them, hence why I am careful! :)

Nice video. But how are you able to achieve 1 hour flight time with half of the capacity of that battery? I'm building a AR Wing 900 with a very similar motor and prop and a 2200mah batt, and the flight time people get with it is 20mins o.o I was so worried about it that I'm thinking about replace this setup for a 1200kv motor with a 8" prop and Lion batteries lol
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 4 жыл бұрын
Well... not half the capacity... but full flight time was around 100 mins, if I remember correctly! It is just that the plane is very small, relatively low drag, pretty light for the setup, AND the stock motor is actually pretty efficient because it is a low Kv one, that would normally be used with 6S on a racing copter, and I am only giving it 4S here! All works out to an efficient flight!

Any f4/f7 flight controller that can comfortably run on 5v or on 2s Li-ion down to 6v? The specs on Matek sometimes say 6v but sometimes say 6.5v.
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm... I would have thought they all can run off of a 5v source!!! The Omni F4 Pro can have up to 6S pack connected on the inputs for the power module, and it works well, I assume the internal regulators powering it are 5v.
@mortache
@mortache 5 жыл бұрын
@@ArxangelRC I know that switching step down voltage regulators get really noisy once the input voltage goes close to the output voltage (dropout voltage which is about 6.5v for some common buck converters). But i have no way of reliably knowing that voltage in a board. If the board components run on 5v then there could be a way to run them with an external 5v BEC
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 5 жыл бұрын
Well you could... but you will have to disconnect the internal BEC somehow... not sure how this will work! Was looking at the specs of the Matek Wing controllers, the F405 and F722, and they have an internal 2A 5v BEC to power the FC and its peripherals, and then a separate BEC with selectable voltage to power the servos, and then depending on the battery voltage... you can power the video system either via 9v or 12v... so for that 12v preferably with a 4S battery at least! 9v would be for 3S.

As far as I know, the Mini Talon can do something like 60-70 mA/km with some good speed... but actually getting to these levels of efficiency requires that you fly it a bit tail heavy, and in that instance it does like to tip stall if speed gets low for some reason... and I would like to stay away from planes like this now! :)

Thank you! As for a compass... not using one! The GPS unit does not have a compass, and neither does the board! I am NOT a fan of compasses on a plane, in my experience they cause more issues than good, since the plane is pretty much always moving anyway, the GPS can provide a pretty accurate heading, without being compromised by how close it is to power wires, etc. Besides, I think iNav itself prefers to use the GPS for that, and no a compass! :)
