I only own the F6 not the F3 - but your comment about the lavalier input on the F6 is a little strange as it doesn't have any input other than xlr. The small 3.5mm sockets are for headphones or time code not a lavalier mic.

I like the F6 because: 1) Timecode In/Out (hardwired via 3.5mm) 2) Full size SD Card (up to 1TB) 3) Can take a Sony L Battery (and is hot swappable because you can use this in conjunction with AA batteries and/or USB-C power delivery).

I'm planning on recording vocals outdoors, but also wanted to add a mic preamp to the F3 for better quality. Is there any preamp that doesn't require to be wall powered?

I have the F3 and F6 but have to disagree. First off, your issue with the XLR cable isn't an F6 issue that's an Amazon cheap cord issue. So if you just use good XLR cables, ie Mogami cables etc you wouldn't really have this issue. But the nice feature about the F6 is that it has the False Take mode. The False Take mode allows you to neatly organize all of your bad takes or good takes into the False Take folder. Depending on the situation, I'll intentionally put all my best takes in the False Take Folder or in other cases, put my bad takes in the False Take folder. The F3 doesn't have that feature, at least not yet. I also find the menu system much more intuitive as a whole on the F6. Is the price of the F6 justified over the F3. nope. But I just think the rationale about the XLR cables is an unfair one on your part. Just because you got a cheap shitty Amazon cable doesn't make the F6 a worse interface. That's just a shitty XLR cable specific to Amazon and has nothing to do with the F6.

I only use Mogami cables, I had the f6 since launch. First time I had the issue was with a Mogami cable. The cheaper cables I’ve used are, Cables Matters, Hosa, and Monoprice. They all got stuck slightly, the “$8” cable is the Monoprice. Not one cable got stuck in the f3 I’ve tried 5 different f3’s and 3 different f6’s including mine. Check the reviews on any website selling the f6 for complaints about the XLR issue. I never said the f6 was a worse interface, I did mention that as long as you use Mogami cables with the f6 you’ll be fine. Not many use or know about Mogami cables, the majority will buy the cables I mentioned above so I think it was justified to mention the issue.

@@Scentedstyle I've had all those cables and haven't had issues with the slots. Again, your issue is not what the majority of owners of the F6 are experiencing.

I had the same problem with stuck cables on my Sounddevices MixPre II. Never had this problem with any Zoom or Sounddevices recorders before.

From someone who uses both everyday 😂 F3 Content Creator Compact/Easy F6. Corporate or Event Work. TimeCode/Software Mixer Not really in the same functionality for Comparison. Zoom would have never made the F6 to compete with units with MixPre by only making more inputs. Not fair to talk down on the F6 until you really need all the functionality. Whether I’m shooting a high quality 5 person Podcast or Interview Or Timecoding 5 Cinema Cameras and Tentacle 🐙 Track E Recording and my Rode Wireless Go II to the master timecode on the F6 at a Wedding and sync everything back at home with one click and 5 seconds processing perfectly synchronize All Video and Audio for the entire day. Very different uses.
