Doesn’t this introduce white noise from the empty second input? In this mode, you can’t individually lower the second input to 0.1 because they’re both mixed together

Mono mix combines any noise and digital glitches from the "silent" track into your stereo file. Better off selecting left channel only in post.

Thanks for the tutorial! I've experienced some problem when I use external mics and the power cable at the same time. I get short but high buzz-sounds that apers several places through the recording. And when I remove the power cable everything work for fine. Anyone else who have experienced this, and have a solution to the problem?

the size of sound waves in any DAW software doesn't mean anything. it s just for visualization purposes and it can be increased or decreased any time. just check your meter levels.

When I try to record using the built in mic and one external xlr mic, I only get the "L" audio for the external. How do I get the external mic to have "L" and "R" audio? Thank you!

One of those reasons is that we wanted a recording set-up in which our interviewer and interviewee both had their own microphone (until now, there's just been one between them). The Zoom H4n seemed to offer this function, so it seemed like the best option. I used the Zoom for the first time last week and was looking forward to hearing the results, but unfortunately our latest podcast hasn't recorded very well (undoubtedly my fault - not the equipment!). I'm not sure where I'm going wrong? >>>

great thanks,.. You mentioned there were ways to edit the left track sound to cover both left and right. Could you give details about what to do as the sound has been recorded and we can't rerecord. Hope to hear from you soon

Is there a message board anywhere dealing with h4 problems? Mine got a little knock the other day and since then, when powered up the screen shows VER=1.72 ZOOM and nothing but. Just acting like an expensive piece of junk. What to do?

How do I stop looping or even sounds like a delay when recording into my Zoom H4? I am using Sam Broadcaster from my laptop to a Steinberg CI 1 interface and using my mixing boar for vocals. It's driving me crazy. Music is fine in the recording but the vocals have either a loop or delay! Please help!!!!!

Hello, I'm looking for a recorder to make live acoustic music videos, you think the H5/H4 would work well for that porpoise? Is it possible to record with the build in microphone alongside with a connected acoustic guitar for example, and be able to control each one separately? I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

I had two Beyerdynamic M58 N(c) dynamic microphones attached to the Zoom H4n via two male to female balanced XLR leads (inserted into the two inputs at the bottom of the recorder) . I was recording the podcast in Stereo mode (with mono-mix selected), but the recording levels (set at the default 80) were REALLY low. The levels were barely registering. In a panic, I stupidly increased the recording level to about 100, but it's left me with a really quite recording and really noticeable hiss.

zoom h4n has 2 XLR input only. you can record 4 mics at the same time using 2 y-x connectors but you ll have 2 mics on each channel

Brilliantly clear instructions. I'm wondering, if you could possibly help...so I need to use the external mic for recording phone calls. Do I need to keep my zoom on that mode in order for the recording to work out ok? Huge thanks. I'm using a (scuse me, I'm not that technical) mobile phone with a lead that has a male to female bit on the end (that could be the wrong jargon, but one of the 'plug in parts' is bigger than the other). I've tested it, and despite my stupidity with tech, managed to record a phone call...(go me! Who knew?) I just need to know now if I have to balance the sound during the recording). This might be clear as mud, apologies. If you do understand what I'm asking, could you answer me as if you're talking to a five year old - I might just grasp it! haha.

Quick question. I use the audio-technica At835b Boom mic for my video productions. My zoom H4N low-cut is off, comp/limit off, and the record level all the way up to 100. record format is Wav kHz96/24bit. my question is.Why when I upload the wave files to my timeline in the editing software. The waves are very tiny, and you can barely see them. But while I'm recording, the levels on this Zoom are almost peeking??????

These H4N video guides are great! I wonder if you might be able to help me? We've recently invested in a Zoom H4n at work to record our podcasts. For the past year, we've been recording our podcasts with an old Sony MZ-RH1 MiniDisc recorder and a single Beyerdynamic M58 N(c) dynamic microphone. This set-up - though rudimentary (and making use of whatever equipment we could lay our hands on!) - has actually produced perfectly good results for us, but we wanted to upgrade for various reasons >>>

I use the H4N for podcast recording but I use to condenser mics; one for me and one for my guest. So, I get one voice per channel. I'd like to get both channels to sound like one track by the time I publish the files. How can I get the two channels to sound like one when I'm using two mics?

Amy Winters yes. I decided to keep the channels separate while recording. Then in audacity there is an option called split stereo to mono that combines them. Keeping the channels split allows me to manage the recording levels for each mic separately, and edit the tracks separately, and then "combine" them in audacity. I just spent the day playing with a file that I had recorded previously. Finally looking forward to more interviews now that I have this figured out! Hope that helps!

Our podcasts are a simple format: a ten minute sit-down interview (with one interviewer and one interviewee), so we don't need to record anything fancy. All we need to do is make sure the recording is clear so that we can hear the voices! Have I set the recorder on the wrong setting for this kind of recording? Used the wrong leads to connect the mics? As you've probably guessed, I'm very much an audio amateur, so I do apologise for these stupid questions and probably even stupider mistakes!

Hi I have a question. I want to record with the 2 built-in mics plus a boom mic. The thing is that from the boom (in 4ch mode) I only receive the L channel. Is there a way that I can record the stereo from the built-in and a mono from the boom conected to jack number1??
