Excellent walk through. I just ordered one, now that the price is even less than the H4 (under $200!). But to get that price down, lots of accessories no longer come with it. Just the quality sound of the stereo mics alone, on the H4, are worth the price of the whole unit. And I hear the H6 is even better. 👍

7:00 minutes in video, plug-in power is not for connecting usb but is for mic/line input jack which is in X/Y capsule. This input is used for using lav or external mic and plug-in power power can be used to power this mic 2.4 v. Page 8 and page 88 of Zoom H6 manual

I've had one of these for a couple of months to record my podcast. I hate to admit this, but I just bought a new condenser mic and was having so many issues with how quiet it was and end up buying a cloud lifter to get it back up without distorting it with increasing the gain. Literally 3 minutes in to this video when you were talking about the -20 db switch I looked at my recorder and I had that turned on on my mic and switching that off fixed my issue and now I can return the cloud lifter that I don't need yet. Thank you for saving me $150!

Stereo is not channels 1 and 2. It is the mixed result of all the inputs. You can control this in the virtual mixer interface. It's not the easiest thing to navigate but it's not impossible if you have a need to do so. Most podcasters would want multichannel by default but there are reasons to use the stereo mix. Backup is very useful in that it records a backup file of the mix with a pad applied. This lets you have a way of recovering from clipping if you get over modulated without breaking out Izotope RX. This is not a bad thing to have on by default. Similar with the 24 bit recording options. This can help in post. And of course note that the Zoom recorders cannot record and act as an interface at the same time. For that you need something like the more expensive SoundDevices MixPre line of recorders that has recently been released this year. !
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the notes - I meant that it was a mix of the entire audible recording. In saying "Channel 1 & 2" I meant, your standard stereo mix, i.e. just a "Left-Right" or "Channel 1-2" output

Hi, I just watched your video, thank you very much. I was wondering if I can use a lavalier with the zoomH6. I usually make blog videos, I just moved to zoom h6 so Im looking for the best option for recording.
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! That totally depends on the lavalier. You'll need to know what kind of voltage the lav mic takes, so that you can plug it in without damaging it. If it's typical +48v like phantom power, you can connect it using the 1/8" jack on that XY mic at the top of the H6. If it's lower than 48, you'll need to A) get a 1/8" to XLR adapter (amzn.to/2YZvaO9) and B) change the voltage on the input you're using to match the lav mic (either 12 or 24) by going to Menu > Input & Output > Phantom > On (to turn it on) and also Voltage to set the correct voltage level. Good luck!

8:07 you should ALWAYS record with 48 kHz @ 24 Bit if you're recording a podcast. It's the best sound quality without creating extremely large raw footage, and every software and service like auphonic will work best with these settings. Also if you use StudioLink or however work with other podcasters, 48 kHz 24 Bit is the standard that the podcasting community mostly has a consent in.
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 2 жыл бұрын
I believe standard is still 44.1 @ 16 unless you're recording video, which is 48 @ 24
@marctestarossa
@marctestarossa 2 жыл бұрын
@@thepodcastmasters OK, then maybe standard isn't the right term, because different things have different standards. But 48 @ 24 is the setting that I would highly recommend, because you will have the least compatibility and desynchronization problems with all these different software and services. My recording software requires this setting, StudioLink uses it and if you want to merge recordings from different sources into one project, you can stay away from much trouble if settings are always the same. And the actual space you save isn't too much, especially nowadays where hard drive space is cheaper than ever.

At 7:00 you described the “plug-in power” as selecting batteries or external power through the mini USB plug. I don’t think that is correct. I believe plug-in power is something you may need if you are using a lav mic through the XY mic connector. Lav mics usually need low voltage...plug-in power.
@johnhorrobin8560
@johnhorrobin8560 5 жыл бұрын
Art Johnson I agree, there is confusion between USB power and ''PLUG in '' power. older cheapo mics used that,, about 1.5 volts ,, Can't seem to get him to understand the difference.
@PeterAlanJohnson

You are correct, Art, the "plug in power" switch controls the power to the 3.5 input on the XY mic connector, not the USB plug behaviour.

Use a 1/8" male to 1/8" male cord and connect it to the line out! From there, you can assign the line out to a track. That, or you can use a 1/8" male to 1/4" male cord and plug the 1/4" into one of the 4 inputs. Hope this helps!

Depends on the interface, every interface has different internal preamps which have different native gain levels, so you might have cleaner or noisier inputs on an interface. Like I said they're all different, so you'd have to test them. The H6 is great because the inputs are very clean

Thanks for the video. I'm trying to connect the Ronalds CS-10EM binaural headphones. I placed the red 3.5 mm minijakc on the Y connector (2 normal output jacks) to record each channel separately and put the black on the headphones. In this way, I hear a background noise that increases when I increase the gain. Phantom is connected and configured with 12 V because they are condenser microphones. I do not know how to eliminate this noise. I need to record with these headphones. Any information will be useful. Thank you.

Could you go into more detail of what the "Pad 0 to -20" actually does? I thought it gave a boost so that I wouldn't need a cloudlifter but from watching your video what I am understanding it is more of a limiter. Which if you have a hot microphone or instrument it limits it so it doesn't keep peaking. I just want to make sure I understand what the Pad does.

Hi Does it Charge with it's own battery, or do you mean run off the power source thanks!
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t charge the batteries when plugged in via USB, it just acts as a power source, so the batteries aren’t needed

I just purchased one of these and have it set up and ready to go. Problem is when I push record I get a message that says "Invalid SD card". The card is new. It is a SanDisk Extreme PRO, 95 MB/s 64GB. Somebody please help me!!!
@mesonichue6198
@mesonichue6198 3 жыл бұрын
Did you format the card? Another comment mentioned it & said when the card is formatted it created a ten ‘project folders’. Maybe if not formatted the sound from zoom has nowhere to save on the card. I could be wrong. But if not then cool. Good luck 🍀
@thepodcastmasters

Correct, the cards will normally read as incorrect format until you format them in the Zoom menu

Can an acoustic/electric guitar be plugged in directly via 1/4” phone plug, or is a preamp or direct box required?
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 4 жыл бұрын
The inputs are a combo mic/line in, so if you use the 1/4” there with a guitar you should be fine. Just turn on the pad

Do you know if you can record, and use the interface at the same time?
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 4 жыл бұрын
If you’re using it as an interface that means you’d be recording into whatever DAW you’re using. Not onto the H6

can i ask a recording formate question my zoom seem to create a new recording file n move it to a new folder each time example i have 10 files in 10 different folder how do i set it so all my files are in 1 folder
@dealingwithmygrief344
@dealingwithmygrief344 6 жыл бұрын
every time you hit record, it will create a new folder inside the project folder. That is by design.
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 6 жыл бұрын
Dealing With My Grief is correct, when you format the SD card the device will automatically create 10 project folders, then gradually save your new recordings into them

Thanks man. If I set it up for battery use for power yet still have it plugged in, will it automatically feed off of plugged in power once the batteries die during recording?
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 4 жыл бұрын
Manna-hata Movies if it’s plugged in, it won’t use the battery at all. You’ll see the battery icon disappear once you plug it in

I rented an H6 and the channels are matched up (1/2, 3/4) insted of being individual. I can't find anything on how to change it to operate each channel individually is there a setting in the Menu that i'm missing?
@thepodcastmasters
@thepodcastmasters 4 жыл бұрын
If you push both inputs 1-2 together, it will lock them as a pair. Simply push them both together again, and it will unlock them.

@@beccahammond I was able to figure it out when it comes to Skype you need to be in Stereo Mix not Multi-track. The DAW the challenge is that I didn't know is the input in Reaper starts at 3,4,5,6 for the XLR inputs on 1,2 which I assumed it was.
