Hello, nice review. I do have a H5 recorder, of the same H-series as the H6 or the H8. Zoom's mic capsules are always somewhat hissy and noisy. I don't recommend buying them. You can do all the M/S-stereo tricks on ANY stereo recording, because M is just the sum of left and right channels, and S is just the difference L-R channels. (Or, left channel is M + S, and right is just M-S:) You can do all these nice M/S stereo image manipulations in post production very easily, e.g. with the free Voxengo M/S plugin for Steinberg VST. No need to buy a dedicated M/S mic capsule. Rather than buying a (hissy noisy) Zoom shotgun capsule, I would recommend looking for a good low noise shotgun mic to plug into the XLR inputs. Recording quality would be much better, plus less handling noise. There's some strange "issues" with the inputs and gain controls of the H5 - do a check, whether it's also on the H8 or H6. XLR-inputs: Input a loud high level into the XLR inputs so that you need to set the gain knobs to below the "2.5" settings on the gain knobs to reduce the meter readings on the H-series devices to just below the 0dBFS / not bring up the overload lights into flashing. Check, whether the recorded wave form is not distorted, but just brought down to a lower level. (I.e., a number of samples saturating at - say- -3dBFS "flat line"; sine hills or dales "cut off flattened", causing audible distortion). Zoom microphone capsules: Test them with a high frequency of about 16kHz or a sine chirp/sweep from low to very high frequencies (e.g., from 20Hz to 20kHz). Set the gain controls so that the meter readings on the H-series devices read well below 0dBFS, e.g. -3dBFS. Check, whether the overload indicator lights start flashing and wheter the audio becomes overloaded and sounds distorted. At meter readings below -12dBFS, you would not see the overloads flashing, nor hear distortion.

Hi, 2 things: First, I just wanted to let you know your videos are really good! I like how you go in depth with little problems! Thank you very much! Second, I'd like to record myself playing guitar in stereo, and I'm kinda looking at the H6, since the screen is slanted it will be hard to monitor levels, but perhaps it's still possible, however, is it possible to rotate the display on the fixed screen, so that it's right side up, when the zoom H6 stereo mics are pointing at you? Thank you!

@@christianskyes I currently use the h4n pro. Would you please tell me something ? When recording I may have my volume up to 95% I'm talking about The button on the right hand side of the zoom. Should I turn my other volume down, while recording On the left side of the zoom or does it even matter. ? Thanks Keith

The grey H6 has a finish that deteriorates over time. They fixed it with the black. I have a new Black H6 and an old grey H5. I still love the size and feel of the H5 but I had to go at the back with some acetone to remove the horribly sticky finish. Zoom were not aware this was going to happen when they initially used it. These units are far from perfect in terms of slightly noisy preamps but I am happy with them.

Out of those two specifically, H6. However… If you want to do high-quality ambient field recordings, Tascam DR-100 Mk III. If you need a “handy” recorder on a budget for amateur use or KZfaq, get a Zoom H4n Pro (not the original H4n, of which the Tascam DR-40 is basically a clone). If you have slightly more money, get an H5. If you need more inputs and you don’t intend on holding the recorder in your hand, H6 would be a good for amateur use. The H4n Pro, H5 and H6 all have the same preamps, so it’s more a matter of features and inputs than recording quality. The H8 has better preamps, but it’s more expensive and kinda bulky. If you need a simple XLR recorder you can mount on the bottom of your camera (or on top of your tripod, or both), the Tascam DR-60D Mk II is about the same price as the DR-40X and would probably be better for this use case. At the high end of what I’d consider “consumer” grade would be the Tascam Portacapture recorders. They’re in the same general price range as the H6 and H8, and have less noise and 32-bit float recording, but fewer inputs. If you want a “prosumer” recorder to do basic professional work like corporate videos and wedding/event videography, the Zoom F-series recorders (F3, F6, F8n Pro) are pretty good. Beyond that are the “true” professional recorders like Sound Devices, but those are probably way out of your price range.

@@Matthew_Raymond thanks a lot for your coment. My doubt now IS basically If I should go to Zoom H6 or Tascam Portacapture. I don't care if it's big for transportation. It would be for recordings with the internal microphone of some environments and being able to use the XLR inputs. whether for filming (pertiga + microphone) or another function.

@@criticactual I own an H6. It was my first real recorder. So I’m less familiar with the Portacapture line. However, I would guess that the quality of the included mics on the Portacapture recorders would be in the same ballpark as the XYH-6 included with the H6, so it’s more a matter of which feature set you’d prefer. I think you’d probably be happy with something like a Tascam Portacapture X8 because of its more modern features, although I’m not in love with the who app-ification of recorders and I’d prefer the simple tactile buttons and knobs of the H6 (although the non-touch H6 menus are a pain). One thing to note is that when recording using built-in/included mics, the best recorders for that are going to be more expensive recorders with fewer inputs. However, this provides you with other options to consider. First, you could just get an XLR recorder with lots of inputs and buy a stereo microphone or a pair of small diaphragm condenser mics and sacrifice portability. This option could get expensive, though. Second, you could get two separate recorders, one dedicated to XLR mics and the other being a small stereo recorder like the Sony PCM-A10 or Zoom H1n. This would also be slightly more expensive, and you’d have to sync in post, but most small stereo recorders also let you plug in lavalier microphones and are small enough to hide on talent. But seriously, gun to my head, you should probably just get the Portacapture and just accept that you’ll have to make a few minor compromises.
