AB reviews the Zoom PodTrak P8, the big sibling to the Zoom PodTrak P4. Not only can you record audio, you are also able to edit audio within the device itself, allowing you to create a podcast from start to finish without needing a computer! It also contains similar features to the P4, but in a much more expanded format. Some features include 6 XLR mic inputs, the ability to handle 2 remote phone calls at once, 9 sound pads, 6 color-coded headphone jacks with corresponding volume nobs and more! Would you record a podcast using the Zoom PodTrak P8?

@@JeremyLeech ...and better preamps! The preamps on the Rodecater pro are bad (max gain of 55 db) and can't drive my SM7B properly (as a matter of fact, even with my SM58 I was introduced with additional noise from the preamp). This is the main reason I returned my Rodecaster pro. In my opinion the foundamentals of an audio recorder are the preamps, and RODE failed in that department. Would definitely go for this Zoom PodTrak P8 with a 70+ db max gain. Thanks for the video B&H!

I got my P8 for Podcasting and for streaming on StationHead and it's amazing, I really enjoy this compact machine. I have also the P4 and it is a pretty good device too, but if you have the P4 you may think twice to upgrade because it has almost the same capabilities that the P8 the main differences are the editor which is simple to use but hard to get a polished edit (you don't want the P8 to do that), and you have a little bit of compression, more detailed info and of course 36 PADS, that is what it caught my attention. To Summarize I recommend both devices. If you really want the P8, but you feel tempted to buy the P4 instead, save your money and invest in the P8. I bought the P4 first because I didn't know there was a P8 version and when I realized it I couldn't return the P4 (It was outside the return window) and I just bought the P8. I will be using the P4 for traveling and record things outside.

I've been using the Rodecaster Pro for about six months now and it's very intuitive for me at this point. I notice that Zoom is benefiting from the features and user feedback that the Rodecaster Pro has had. Zoom has four pages of sound bites possible where the Rodecaster Pro has two at this point but in my experience I've used them very little. A professional live broadcast could benefit from more to have genuine newsie sound bites ready to play during a live program. Since I edit my podcasts in Audacity having editing features on the unit is a non-starter for me and I think most would agree that these mix desks will always be used with a computer nearby or in direct use at the time. The MSRP is good, $100 less than the Rodecaster Pro at the moment, I expect the Zoom P8 will quickly drop to keep pace with the Rodecaster Pro if Rode decides to have a price adjustment. Good review.

I also have the Rodecaster Pro. What's nice about the Rodecaster is that Bluetooth wireless calling is built into the unit, simply pair your phone and press the Bluetooth button on the console and BAMM, you have wireless calling. But on the Zoom P8, you must buy the optional $49 Bluetooth plug-in adapter which is a bummer. That means the Zoom P8 at list price of $499 plus extra $49 for the Bluetooth adapter makes it nearly the same price as the Rodecaster...plus you have to worry about plugging in and potentially losing an external dongle attachment. Why can't Zoom simply make Bluetooth functionality built into the unit versus charging the public an extra $49.00, seriously??

SUPER GREAT REVIEW - so glad B&H sponsors these. However, I have a SUGGESTION for these podcast mixer-recorders: Can't change pads while recording?? WHY NOT?? Podcast-Station (RIP, circum 2000-2010) you could save clips from interviews, for later ridicule (or whatever!) That's so HOT HOT HOT it's like smoking non-filters. It had a separate encoder engine to do that - and it worked great - but limited the resolution. It would swing back and forth between compressed and WAV (uncompressed) in order to pull this off (wav's are easy to edit.) Originally it was a specialized computer that sold for beaucoup - but eventually went for like $150 As I Recall, and eventually the guy pulled it or died or s.s.l.t. So - the ACME of PODCASTING SW was, and is no more.... So Suck That Idea, Zoom.

For multitrack recording, the PodTrak P8 offers an SD slot able to handle 512 GB of audio. You can record each XLR input, remote input, and soundboard to their own individual files. The PodTrak P8 also makes a master stereo recording of your mix for quick and easy exporting in mission-critical scenarios. In addition to a stereo file ready to be used for podcasting, separate files for the audio of each channel can also be recorded and utilized for editing after recording. The P8 has every necessary editing function to complete episodes for distribution. These include deleting unnecessary parts of recorded data, optimizing levels automatically, and combining opening and ending files. Intuitive operation using the large 4.3-inch color touchscreen allows anyone to easily complete podcasts without using a computer. When the channel 6 INPUT SELECT switch is set to USB, it will record in stereo. >Mark

Certainly you can. SD Card Recording and Audio Interface Functionality : Designed for truly convenient portability, the PodTrack P8 can record directly to an SDHC card (up to 32GB capacity) or an SDXC card (up to 512GB capacity). A 4GB card will yield over three hours of 16-bit / 44.1 kHz 4-channel recording time using the BWF-compliant WAV format for uncompressed audio quality and industry-standard file compatibility. Note that media cards are available separately, and larger capacity cards may increase startup times. Alternatively, use the PodTrak P8 as a 2-in/2-out USB 2.0 audio interface (at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz) with your Mac/Windows computer or iOS/Android mobile device (separately available Apple Camera Connection Kit is required for use with iOS devices). >Mark

On the Zoom P8, the audio cut and trim post editing feature via the LCD screen looks very useful. Maybe the Rode Rodecaster might have that same functionality in the next firmware upgrade? Plus the "marker" button on the Zoom P8 is also useful to mark parts of the recording to review later. Hmm, wouldn't that require a physical dedicated button on the Rodecaster to do the same? Or could a future Rodecaster firmware update provide that same type of marker functionality? The Zoom P8 does look super cool, but personally I'm more interested in bringing on remote guests via the smartphone channel or USB channel (or Bluetooth channel) versus having a whole room full of people podcasting live in person and spreading COVID cooties around. With that in mind, would the Zoom P8 be able to handle say 3 or 4 remote guests at the same time? It appears it can only handle up to 2 remote guests (via smartphone and USB channels), which would be the same as what the Rode Rodecaster can do, correct? If the Zoom P8 can handle more remote guest connections compared to the Rode Rodecaster, I would be more interested. Great video by the way, AB! This video is more detailed than the video published by Sweetwater audio. EDIT: Never mind about the marker function on the Rodecaster, it's on the LCD screen, not a physical button...duh! :-)

Thanks so much for the kind words. Yup, it's just 2 remote calls as of this video. I was thinking that if you did some clever bundling, like having a 3-way call from your phone (TRRS or Bluetooth), then a group call through USB via Zoom, Skype, etc..., then you may be able to get several remote guests on at once, though you wouldn't have independent audio for each guest.

All of the Zoom PodTrak P8's mic inputs are configured for direct monitoring, as long as they are not muted. The On Air button can be used to control whether the mic inputs are sent to the podcast stereo file, speaker output jacks, and USB port, but there is no way to disable live monitoring for mic tracks. Instead, users who do not wish to hear a direct monitoring feed from connected microphones can lower or disable their personal headphone output.

They screwed up making the phone a permanent track and not USB. If they flip those two this would be a perfect podcast board.

What stupid decision.... If you have TWO call phones at the same time, you cannot have music playing in the background of your show... You have a lot of of XLR inputs but you barely need more of two in a real situation... At least you are working for the BBC. What stupid decision, right now in pandemic times when you urgely need to connect more guesses over the phone, and still be able to play some backgroun music... What were hey thinking? These Zoom guys are always little off the line, they think more XLR is cool and pro but this is not the case
