This is not a demo or a review of the Zoom R24. This video explains why I like, and have bought several, of these digital recorders. As a singer-songwriter it is one of my most useful tools. I try not to splurge on gear since I´m not a professional musician but the R24 is pretty affordable (under 400€) and I hope to keep using it for a long time.

Update: I now own 4 Zoom R24s as they have been officially discontinued. And no, they are not for sale! Check out my music , SHT Musik, on KZfaq and Bandcamp.

The R24 is up & running much more quickly than a DAW. This really helps with spontaneity & I can record an idea while it's still fresh & without the creativity-sucking faff of a computer.

You can transfer files to and from the R24 to a computer. What's the significance of that? Well, you can, for instance, record tracks on the R24 then transfer them to a DAW for post processing. Then you can transfer them back to the R24 in the project (song) you are working on. Then you can set up Set Lists of Project Songs and use the R24 as a portable backing track machine because it runs on batteries. All you have to have is powered PA speakers, which can also be battery powered, which means you could set up anywhere, including a beach strand, a park, an empty lot, a roof top, an underground meth lab, a CIA dark site, you get the idea.

I want to do this, but have not figured out how. I would love your feedback on the steps in the process.

All of my albums are recorded exclusively with the Zoom R24 which I have had since 2012. Because my studio is DAW-less (which is my preference), I do all of my recording, mixing and editing on this unit. I have two units since I figured they would be discontinued. Of all of the multi-track recording units that are on the market, the Zoom R24 is my personal favorite. It simplifies the process of recording without all of the confusion and jargon of learning computer-based DAWs; plus, they're expensive as well. Another plus is that it allows me to swap tracks without having to remove the plugs to record into the particular track. As of this date, I have had no issues using this unit. I keep mine covered in my studio with cloth covers. I probably may purchase a third unit just to have in case. Computers have a tendency to crash, thus losing files on its hard drive. The R24 is self-contained. Zoom made the best recorder, in my opinion, with this. It lives up to the adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights on this excellent recorder. Great minds think alike. Much Abundant Success to Your Music.

Where is your music? I'm curious to hear it. I've never produced a finished track, except live demos for my band, only with the R24.

On the part about the ''DAWless recording'' , it's exactly how i experience recording now with the R24 ... At first (before i bought it) i wanted to find a vintage Multitrack Cassette recorder , but they're kinda expensive and most of the time , they always have something broken ,.... or about to break 😅 Because first of all , i wanted to discover the ''tactile'' side of recording (,the operation buttons , the sliders , etc )... so i searched for something similar as an old portastudio...but digital , and the most look-like were the Zoom R16/24 . So once i bought the R24 , i said goodbye to DAW . Apart from the distracting side of the DAW with the multiple waveforms and plug-ins screens , personnally , i found it was also really easy to cheat my creativity to a state of almost-perfection with all these gadgets ( so many Plug-ins , effects , and above all, the Copy/Paste to avoid repeating the same part while recording) . With the R24 , it's a total different way of doing my music ... As you said , i work now with my ears instead of my eyes . The things that i record now are more ''natural'' .. no more ''copy/paste'' , or ''erasing every bits of imperfections here and there'' 🤣🤣 . So , the result is ''as-is'' and it sounds better to my ears .

Inspired by your video I also bought two Zoom R24, one for the rehearsal room and the other one for mixing at home. However, when i plugged in the sd card with my band recordings into my R24 at home, I cannot play back the recording - the project is there, but no sound, no markers. On the Computer, everything is there. Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Thanks!

can you shift the position of tracks by hand? I have an external mono synth and want to lay down some separate sequencer tracks
@SHTMusik
@SHTMusik Ай бұрын
I am not exactly sure what you mean. There is a sequencer mode where you can make loops and arrange them on any of the 24 tracks so they repeat continuously or only where you want them, like the first two bars and then again in the chorus for example. You can also switch recorded tracks for example from track 8 to track 9 if you want using the swap function.

Thanks for your video. You mention that you can record drums live with pads on R24. May I know how to do it?

Check out the video: "How to record the drum pads on the ZOOM R24 to an audio track (finger drumming)" If you want excellent tutorials about the R24 the ProAudioEXP channel here on YT has some good videos. I don´t pay for a lot of stuff but I actually bought the whole series on the R24 from this channel and I think that it was a good purchase but the R24 tutorials on YT are quite plentiful so no need to pay if you don´t mind hunting around a bit for the info.

How do you deal with sync'ing up synths with midi to these devices? I'm a bit disappointed that none of these newer multi-track recorders seem to support at least sending a play cue or a midi time clock, at a glance. I'm tempted to buy one of these, like the r20, to stem out projects that I have already worked on in a DAW, but I'm already suffering just because I don't see anyone actually sync'ing without at least going through a crazy clunky and no-longer-portable workarounds.
@SHTMusik
@SHTMusik Жыл бұрын
Definitely a drawback of this series of recorders, no midi, difficult to sync. You CAN sync 2 R24s together so it seems like it would have been pretty easy for them to expand this capability. I guess you can´t have everything.

You can use the headphone out for the click track and add a simple device for translating that click into MIDI. For example, retrokits sell cheap devices for this.

Nice demonstration of the "endowement-effect" ... Nothing really about the devices ...

I think that I explained pretty well why the features on the R24 are such a good fit for my music-making needs. And yes, because I have several of these recorders and I am able to swap projects from one to the other this has influenced my decision not to invest in other recorders. However, I keep a close eye on comparable products, and for the price, I have found nothing on the market that is a better value when is comes to the features offered. I own a high-end audio interface but most of the time I prefer to use the R24 instead.
