With photography I never liked using zooms because I always felt like it led to me framing shots the exact same way. I would use primes so that I’d have to get creative, move around a bit instead of just zooming the lens to the point that I had a decent frame from my position. From this video it seems the depth of field is the main consideration for you when considering primes vs zooms. What about these super fast zooms? There’s a Lumix 10-25mm 1.8 for m43 (bmpcc4k) that would probably be amazing, ticking your dof box as well as convenience.

7:36 ...but with the *prime* lenses... But, yes, that's one of the main differences. Although I think that in situations of improvisation, with prime lenses you can defend the position for being close to the subject while with zoom lenses there is a risk of blocking the subject by someone standing in front of the camera. I've missed important moments like that. Of course, with zoom lenses you still have the opportunity to shorten the focal length. But often with the possibility of zooming, we become lazier.

I shoot a lot of sports snd once I go back to work and save a bit (currently laid off due to corona) I plan to get a zoom. I’ve enjoyed prime shooting so much though. I've watched this video at least 3 times cause I'm super on the fence. For a Z Cam E2C (M4/3) with a speed booster, 18-35 sounds like a good all-around + low light (f/1.2-1.3 is possible I think) but I currently use a Contax c/y 28mm f/2/8 and a Pentax K 50mm f/2, both converted to EF. Also, "Rescate" was a dope film. I absolutely loved it!

You can’t beat the speed and versatility of zoom lenses, but man I just can’t get accustom to using them really. I get stuck on figuring out what focal length I should shoot on. Rather than focus on the shoot. Primes just free my mind up and give me a look I really love. My go to primes sigma 20mm, 35mm, Canon 50mm, pretty soon I will add a medium teIephoto. I may invest in a 24-70mm just hearing your advice.
@elephantgrass631
@elephantgrass631 2 жыл бұрын
@Mark Bone A question regarding Fstops: On full frame cameras, making the aperture as open as possible gives you that razor thin plane of focus especially for a lens that goes to F1.4. That being said, do you rack focus like crazy on your shoots? Do you use the Sony wizard magic auto focus? or maybe a bit of both? (Good luck to Panasonic users on that BTW).

Mark the FX9 is so amazing. I know you already found out about the fx9 by buying it, but I just wanted to say that. We use an fs7 for college athletics video as our “big” camera and I love it so much compared to our c300ii. I am hoping to get an fx9 one day for my personal work. We use the Rokinon primes a lot, they are cheap but look really really nice. Eventually I’d love to rent some sigma cine zooms... for sports we need to make quick adjustments so we often use a 70-200 for football or a 24-70 for basketball. Zooms are essential for some sports but you can make a prime work!
@markbone
@markbone 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree, the Fs7 was superior to the C300ii in many ways. I think Canon has made some incredible progress with the C500ii. It'll be interesting to see how this battle plays out between the cameras. I think Sony needs to fix some things asap. btw Are you looking to buy another Fs7? @@markbone I don't make the purchase calls at my school... but if the price is right I may be interested in an FS7 for personal work. I love the rendering of your close-ups in 24mm, which is very interesting for interviews or portraits. I have two questions: Do you have distortions with the sigma or canon at 24mm compared to other focal lengths : 35/50 mm in particular ? Do you find the result of the canon interesting from 24 to 35mm, I'm interested in the zoom for the versatility ? Thanks in advance :)

Hello Mark, I saw this video and the one of the top 5 gear and make me wonder, when you get your first camera which comes with kit lenses, what you upgrade or buy next? better lenses or good lights? what's first? what's more important?

Buy a good lens. Learn natural lighting and then buy one big light and learn how to work that

Thanks for the great info, Mark! I subbed to your channel cause of this! You nailed it at the part that if you want your shots to be focused on the subject, then buy primes. BTW, I only have an APS-C size canon mirrorless for now, will the 22mm F.2 and 56mm F1.4 suffice?

The lenses you have all depend on the content you’re shooting. There’s no way to say if those are the “right lenses” but you’re covering a wide focal range with them which is good

I am looking at a set of 2 Zoom Cine Lenses, the DZOFilm Pictor lenses, 20-55mm T2.8 and 50-125mm T2.8. Both are parfocal and for Super 35 Sensors. I have a Canon C200 which has this type of sensor. What is your opinion on Cine Zoom lenses such as this type mentionned ?

What are your thoughts on the sigma 18-35 1.8? I hear it's one of the sharpest zooms. Also great low light & bokeh

All well said. Though, this full frame being cinematic BS must end.

I don't have the moment. I think it's a great lens when you need a zoom but it's still not a prime lens

Mark Bone: Are you using any filters on the Sigma Art 1.4 ? (A pro mist , or something, as sometimes it looks really nice/ soft/ with some glare)

Hey Mark, awesome video! I was wondering how you get those kind of shots from the people (13:10 min)? I mean how do you talk to them to look into the camera, without making it akward. So that you can get these authentic feelings from them? Would love to get some tips from you there, thank you!

The shots I get of people looking at the lens are usually the last shots that I get. That way I've had time to build a rapport
