Zorba le Grec est un film gréco-anglo-américain de Michael Cacoyannis, sorti en 1964 et adapté du roman de Níkos Kazantzákis "Aléxis Zorbás" publié en 1946.
Basil (Alan Bates), un jeune écrivain britannique, retourne en Crète pour prendre possession de l’héritage paternel. Il rencontre Zorba (Anthony Quinn), un Grec exubérant qui insiste pour lui servir de guide. Les deux hommes sont différents en tous points : Zorba aime boire, rire, chanter et danser, il vit à sa guise alors que Basil en est empêché par son éducation. Ils deviennent cependant amis et s’associent pour exploiter une mine. Zorba entreprend de construire un téléphérique, Basil lui fait confiance, mais c’est un échec. Zorba choisit de s’en moquer. Il rit et court sur la plage. Vaincu et conquis, Basil lui demande alors de lui apprendre à danser le sirtaki.
C'est pour les besoins du film qu'est créé le fameux sirtaki, une danse alors inconnue des Crétois. Popularisant le folklore grec, la musique de Míkis Theodorákis devient célèbre dans le monde entier.

This was Anthony Quinn’s pinnacle performance. And that’s saying a lot, when you’re talking about one of Hollywood’s all-time greatest talents. An Oscar-winning Mexican American actor who could play it all; a Mexican, a Greek, an Arab, an Italian, a leading lover etc. Every role he ever played turned out to be an absolutely believable work of art.

Ask around I don't know if there is a Mexican blood runs through him besides the Irish you have to fill me in. but as i understand it your last name is your identity if you want to keep it. For example... Let's say that your mother is a Latino and your father's name is McLeod. So it would be written Regina McLeod.upon Reading that name immediately I know it's scottish name just like the name quin .it's Irish

I saw this movie as a small kid, this scene and the dying Bubulina made me cry. i felt that life is like this film, the death and the laughing, and crying. And it is.

Anthony Quinn- an amazing actor. He played a Greek cien por cien. He mastered the character of a Greek man to perfection. I am Greek descent but also trained in the Arts of Spnaish dance - so this hits home close to my heart. As a person who believes in past lives, Mr. Quinn was surely a Greek in one of them. Quand tout est foutu, quand on a envie de baisser les bras, quand les larmes coulent le long des joues, quand le chagrin nous étreint, il suffit de danser, de laisser la douleur quitter le corps par les pieds comme un courant électrique dans la terre et de retrouver les sensations de l'espace et de la vie. C'est la grande leçon de ce monument du cinéma qu'est Zorba le Grec, de Michel Cacoyannis. Hommage à Antony Quinn.

It was amazing how quickly sirtaki was spread out in the USSR. Everyone danced. Greeks, Ukrainians, Moscowitians, and Uzbeks. Miners and doctors. The dance of a broken leg knew every man and woman in the country. It was a some national dance since.

This film came out in 1964. I was in the Air Force, stationed in Tacoma, WA. I was single, lonely and poor. I remember seeing ot in a downtown theater While Anthony Anthony Quinns performance was memorable it was Alan Bates performamance that impressed me most as I related to Basil

Old lady memories--------young and in the 80's I just up and decided to go to Greece,-- took that pack and off I went, best decision I ever made--camped and stayed in youth hostels. Don't miss the chance to travel. You find a whole different part of yourself you never knew was there; and have the best memories.

If Hollywood would really want to help they would show LGBTQ+ individuals more often, give them more screentime, represent them in a genuine way instead of as the sheer stereotype they are currently presented as and make more movies with LGBTQ+ main characters, especially so for Trans people and other groups that still meet disgust by a large part of the population, to give their audience a point of contact and make their stories known to society at large so, over time, with popular support, they can achieve social- and legal equality and lead an easier life in a less bigoted and hateful society, economy and environment."
