Usually, new actors appear pretty stiff before they start improving their acting skills. Either he has loads of natural talent that he just aces everything even though he's a newcomer, or he really has some romantic feelings for Zhao Lusi so that those real feelings carry over when the cameras are rolling. The newly released clips of the marriage competition probably helped contribute to the increased searches for information on Liu Yuning. Hao Du's words to Leyan when he finally won the competition were probably the most touching, tear-jerking, romantic words of the year. "I... I won. You don't have to marry. You don't have to marry." He knows the princess loves Wei Shuyu, and his love for Leyan is so unconditional that he wouldn't want to force her to marry him against her will. So I bet when Li Shimin blesses the union between the princess and Hao Du, Hao Du is going to turn him down. Some would say that Hao Du has low self esteem, and that is why he doesn't think he deserves the princess. On the contrary, I think it is because he loves her too much. He fought in the marriage competition because he wanted her to have her freedom from the arranged marriage, not because he wanted to tie her to another man (him) she doesn't love. Any other guy would have gladly married the girl and then spend his lifetime treating her well, hoping one day she would love him back. But nope, not Hao Du. He's going to sacrifice his one chance to marry the woman he loves who otherwise would have been unattainable, just so she can be with Wei Shuyu. This guy is indeed an extremely dense piece of wood.
