How to Make a Poseable Action Figure Cape
Today I’m going to show you how you make a poseable cloth cape to add to your action figures. The capes in this video will be sized for 6 inch Marvel Legends, but you can resize the dimensions for other brands of action figures. The cape easily fits on any action figure without damaging them by just squeezing the wire around the top of their shoulders and curved around their neck. You can arrange the cape in several different positions.
Materials:
To make this project you’ll need fabric. I recommend a light knit fabric. I purchased my knit fabric from Hobby Lobby, but I’ve seen it for sale at JoAnn Fabric too. A third of a yard of fabric will be plenty for several capes.
You will also need a piece of paper and a pencil to draw the cape pattern,
a fabric marking pencil,
scissors,
Wire. I’m using 16 gauge aluminium wire. This wire is a bit thicker than the wire I used on my previous projects like the Venom tendrils because we need it to support the weight of the cape in all kinds of positions,
Ruler or t square. I purchased my inexpensive T square from Amazon at: amzn.to/292UUiz
Wire cutters,
And you can either sew this project which looks nicer, but if you can’t sew you can use your choice of glue
Making the Pattern:
We’re going to start by making our cape pattern on our paper. First, fold the paper in half and trace a line on the fold.
The bottom of our paper is going to be the bottom of our cape pattern. We’re going to mark the bottom edge of the cape by making a mark 8 cm from each side of our center line. This means the bottom of the cape pattern will be 16 cm across, but you can add more if you want your cape to be more full.
Then we’re going to mark the top of the cape by measuring 16 cm up from the bottom of the paper and draw a line across. I’m going to find the top edges of the cape by measuring 1.8 cm on each side of the center line. This means the line at the top of your cape pattern will be 3.6 cm long centered on your middle line.
Next we need to make space for the action figure’s neck so I measure 2.5 cm down from the top of the cape on the center line. Then I measure .5 cm out from each side of the center line and mark this on the pattern. This means the space for the action figure’s neck will be 1 cm across.
Then I round the corners on the bottom of my rectangle because this is where it will rest against the back of your action figure’s neck.
Glue Method:
Cut out your pattern and trace around it on your fabric once. Cut out your fabric.
If you are going to use glue, you will want to lay out your wire on top of your fabric so that it is a little smaller than the edges of your fabric. I’d give yourself at least 1 cm on all sides. You’re makinging a triangle with your wire with an opening at the top. Apply glue to the edges of your fabric and fold it over the wire. Let it dry and you’re done
Sewing Method:
Cut out your pattern and trace around it on your fabric twice. Cut out your fabric.
Line up your two pieces of fabric with the best sides of the fabric facing each other and pin the sides to help prevent the fabric from sliding. Sew along the outer edge of the cape starting at the top outermost left corner and all the way to the right outermost right corner. We are going to leave the very top of the cape and the neck hole area unsewn.
After the edges have been sewn, flip the cape inside out. This is why we left the top of the cape unsewn. Now we are going to pin the edges of the cape again and sew along the same outside edges again. This time you want to leave somewhere between half a cm and 1 cm of space from the outer edge to where you are sewing because we will need that space to thread the wire.
Slowly thread your wire through the outer edge of the cape being careful not to poke through the cape. It gets a little tricky on the corners so you may need to bend your wire to get past those points and straighten it out again to continue.
Once your wire is threaded all the way through tighten the fabric along your wire and bend the wire at the two bottom corners.
Next, hand stitch the top edge of the cape closed which will trap the wire inside the cape.

As always, I really like using a t-square to help make measuring faster. The inexpensive one I purchased on Amazon is here: amzn.to/292UUiz If you decide to make your cape more full, just add some width to the bottom of your pattern. I wouldn’t change the dimensions at the top though because then it will get bulky looking (unless that’s the look you’re going for).

+Zubbie I was going to do it with the new doctor strange but he has that special looking collar around his neck do you think that should be added with the cape or separate??
@Zubbie
@Zubbie 8 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I think I'd start off with the collar a separate piece, because you're going to have to cut it out on it's own from the cape any way when you are cutting your fabric. Then once you get it on your figure, if you don't like the look of it loose, you can always decide then to sew or glue it to the rest of the cloak.
