What a player! I just found this as I was prepping for a Yom Kippur service. I’ve been a professional keyboard player since I was 13, and am now semi-retired in Northern VA. Zuill grew up around here, and I know his parents and sister, who are all musicians. In 2002/2003 (don’t recall exactly) my ex-wife (also a cellist) was acquiring her MusicEd degree at George Mason University. Her cello prof (who was Zuill’s teacher when he was in high school) invited her to perform for a master class with Zuill and a few of her studio mates. The prof asked me to accompany Zuill for the class. I received the music (an obscure baroque piece that I don’t even recall) on Wednesday for a Saturday performance. Let’s just say that the next few days were a fury of practice and nerves. I met Zuill about 15 minutes before the performance, we rehearsed it once straight through. He was playing that same Matteo Gofriller “Rosette” cello. It was crafted in 1693. I was playing on a Steinway “D”, and as I finished the opening intro of the piece Zuill came in and I was astounded at the tone and power of that instrument. A momentous day in my musical career! I have been blessed.

I was lucky enough to be conducted under his baton around a year ago! Later in the concert, he played this piece with a full orchestra and it was amazing.

@@matthewv789 fabulous. Thanks for sharing. The pianist playing rachmaninoff was also outstanding. I started playing cello 5+ years ago on my 70th birthday. No prior experience playing any instrument, only listening since high school. Listen to the Scottish Fantasy, fabulous performance and recording. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aceGeLdeqKq2h58.html

Does anyone know why this is almost never performed in its original G minor?
@jonburkart6334
@jonburkart6334 7 жыл бұрын
Portia Zwicker If I'm not mistaken, D minor is the original key. I've searched near and far for a version in G minor and have had no luck.

As someone who learned this piece back in the early Sixties, I can assure you that D minor is the original key (although the latter part of the composition is in D major). I think that you may be confusing it with Bruch's Violin Concerto no.1, which is indeed in G minor
