I Zwifted on a budget, then quickly became addicted, then promptly sold everything I could think of and upgraded everything. My bike, my trainer, my iPad, my monitor stand, my earbuds and am now live streaming... Budget... LOL! Gateway drug is what I call it! LOL! Ride on Shane! Thanks for all of the awesome info!

Definitely a gateway drug! LOL. I started on my XC bike with a $300 trainer. Then bought a dedicated rear wheel and trainer tire. Then a Zwift subscription. Then re-geared my bike for more speed. Then bought an Apple TV to stream it to the television. Then got a floor mat, a fan, and finally bought a road bike. What started as a $300 trainer to use on rainy days has turned into a $4000 indoor cycling addiction!

Hi Shane, I wanted to put a comment on here to thank you. I was hit by a car back in april and have struggled to get back on a bike and train with any constancy . I wasn't sure about zwift and just don't have the bucks to buy a smart trainer but after seeing this vid i bought an Ant plus key and gave zwift a go for the first time on Thursday. a few days in now and I've 80km down over two spins on Zwift and its totally changed the game for me, Im able to put full effort in without freaking over traffic or chickening out on decents. Winter time is setting in here in Ireland and the timing of this couldn't be better for me. I'm now looking forward to a good winter of training and happy i can get my fitness back that i lost in the accident over the winter and go into next season ready. I now have some structure to indoor training and mixed with the Sunday club spin know I can finally get back to full fitness. Its because of people like yourself and Maven posting these vids that lay out the stuff with out any agenda, just to help people get cycling and help people like me get my head back in the game. Thanks Man.

Thanks for posting Ritchie - I am based in England and have just been knocked off my bike. I am looking into options to keep fit whilst also building my confidence back up. My only real damage is to my upper body so I can get back into this over winter whilst I wait. Injury/confidence blows are SO frustrating.

Hey Mark, Yeah confidence is a big thing, The embarrassment rejoining the club spin after they've a year in the legs and your coming back is another one thats really got me down as well as the freking out on the road at traffic. Zwift is letting me get my legs back and is also great for the head you should def give it a go, use shanes set up from this video its perfect, ill look out for you on there :-)

The best way to Zwift on a budget is not use Zwift and avoid the US$180/year fee to use it. Far too expensive and waste of cash. I can control my Wahoo Kickr fine with its app and no Zwift.

Good stuff! Just the information I needed! I don’t really like riding inside so don’t really want to invest in premium equipment for training inside. I’ve actually managed to ride anywhere from 2 to 5 days a week outside up to this point this winter here in the USA! Working from home has helped but I’m always chasing dusk to get back home before dark! Most of the time temperatures rise above freezing everyday and if we get a snowfall it’s gone in a day or so! However a setup like this is good for times like now where ice and snow storms are hitting us and it’s going to be a few weeks before conditions improve to get back outside! Wish I had this already set up for times like this! Time to get on Amazon!

almose exactly how i zwift but i went the extra and bought the $15 cadence sensor and $28 HR monitor.. The cheap HR monitor is a bit touchy and has to be directly on the skin to be even close to accurate. I will be upgrading the HR strap soon as I dont trust the cheap ones accuracy. Great vid!

Up until a week ago I had been using almost this same setup for Zwift - CycleOps Fluid2, Wahoo Blue SC speed/cadence sensor and a cheap heart rate monitor strap all with Bluetooth. Obviously adaptive resistance from a smart trainer aside, this worked great for me and was a very affordable way to use Zwift. I've picked up at least 3-4 of the CycleOps Fluid2 trainers used at my local Play-it-Again in the States for only around $60 USD and purchased the Wahoo Blue SC from Amazon for around $50. I signed up my 11 year old son with Zwift (it's free, just need to sign a consent form) and he used the same setup with his Diamondback Podium 650 - 650C kids road bike. I just got a great deal on a used Saris M2 smart trainer and have done a couple rides with it but I miss the Fluid2 not making hill climbs harder haha! Thanks for all of the content Shane! Started listening to the Zwiftcast at the start of COVID whilst Zwifting before it was warmer outside and have enjoyed that as well.

I found a free indoor spin bike on Gumtree, bought one sided power pedals for $600 AUD and installed them on the trainer. I wanted to buy a cheaper crank power meter but wasn't sure I could fit it. I was previously using the Wahoo Vortex with my road bike and although my current setup is missing erg mode, it's quiet, stable and considerably more comfortable. If you have the room for a bike and dedicated indoor trainer, I could not recommend this setup enough.

Hey there! Just stumbled upon your video while searching for bike trainers on KZfaq. Gotta say, I'm impressed with the way you present and explain the features of different trainers. As an e-bike user, I recently discovered a new crowdfunding project called freebeat's Morph 2-in-1 e-Bike. It seems to offer some outstanding features, especially the indoor recharge capability. I'm genuinely intrigued by the idea of generating CO2-free miles through indoor workouts. It's great to see innovations that combine fitness, technology, and sustainability. Keep up the awesome work, and if you have any insights or thoughts on the freebeat Morph e-bike, I'd love to hear them!

Hi Shane..Thanks for the video. I have a single speed Fuji Declaration. With this set up, will I "feel" the extra resistance when there's an uphill section in the simulated Zwift environment. Am I correct to assume that Zwift "talks" to the trainer and adjust the resistance based on what's on the screen? Sorry if that doesn't make sense. I want something relatively simple that somewhat simulates the outdoors. What does the extra couple of hundred dollars get me if I were to get the M2, for instance? Thx!

My main objection to those magnetic or fluid resistance trainers is that I, at least, found myself going through rear tires like crazy. About one every four or five months. At about $ 50 to $60 Canadian that adds up, so I gave in and got myself a spin bike, which I figure will pay for itself in terms of tire replacement in about two years or so.

They make tires specifically for wheel-on trainers.
