I think the biggest advantage of steering, in a race, is the ability to stay in the ideal part of the draft.

I only bought the elite sterzo since I was afraid i would damage the spokes on the frontwheel since my handlebar was stiff before lol. Not using it for steering, but it feels way more natural to ride the bike indoors now when you can move then handlebar. I guess steering in zwift is just an extra for me :) thanks for your video! like it

And that is PER lap. So cut the corner and save some time back off back into the draft seems like a good strategy. Rinse and repeat. (Seems like coming out of draft for the corner would still be time saving, that'd be a cool but difficult test).

I use the Elite Rizer steering with pace partners. Def makes Zwift more enjoyable.

Eric, thanks for doing this. BUT... what about us mortals who cant hold 5 w/kg? Possibly the % improvement increases at slower speeds. Maybe 3 w/kg test? :)

It's about speed, not W/kg. I did 5 W/kg because that gets me approximately the speed of a B and A race, even though a B race would actually average more like 3.7W/kg. Slower speeds will just increase the times all around. So lap times will be longer, and time saved in turns will be greater. But it won't be a huge amount...

Being able to pick ones line and staying in the draft is the biggest advantage. Otherwise with me my Aviator always seems to be placed on the outside edge in the wind nd never inside the group.

I got dropped by a heap of time on a decent. They were freewheeling and steering, i was pedalling and still couldn’t keep up!

Nice and fun, but there are too many variables to make any significant difference. I used the Elite Sterzo and the Play controllers for tests.

2% faster is pretty significant! question - if there are other riders on the course you'll be able to steer right thru them to take the faster line?

You can't steer right through them like they aren't there, but you can usually take a decent line if you keep your wits about you.

If sandwiched in the pack steering doesn't work. But if small gaps appear, you can manoeuvre yourself to the side of the pack. Makes it interesting trying to keep draft position and taking short line around corners. It can stop you from being slung to the back of the pack when on the outside line

In your opinion, what happens if everyone has a steering device in a race? Does everyone take the best line and effectively have their avatar shown on top of each others if in same place in race? Or does Zwift auto steer avatars away from each other, effectively making steering pointless?

So, I tried it with my new controllers and it looks like you bump shoulders if you move across into someone, so I guess you would end up with a big lump of a peloton 😂

@@Angultra someone reversed engineered the steering addon actually. so he could steer in game with his homemade controller. it was featured on hack a day site. The Elite Sterzo pcb with eletronnics on it looks super cheap btw so I would be surprised if its more than $6 to make.

5w/kg is a B race?

Not exactly... but 5W/kg for a solo rider simulates the front pack speed of a B race pretty nicely. (Actually, B races on Crit City are often over 50kph) Has to do with drafting and pack dynamics. The pack is traveling at 50kph because riders are taking hard pulls at the front, slingshotting through the draft, etc. Average power for the race will be 4W/kg or less, typically, but the speeds may be 50kph or more.

I cut as far as the game would let me go. It's a bit annoying because, as you saw, there is more pavement that seems ridable on some of the corners. But it's not. I think it would be great if, in events, we could use the entire ride. Just like the pros!
