Testing the 13 year old ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 version in 2021!
Due to lack of DX11 (and above) support, newer games wouldn't launch on this graphics card, but what kind of games can you actually play with it? Let's find out!

I have a XFX HD4870 1GB sitting in my old C2D E4600. Back in 2008/2009 I wanted a GTX 260 so bad but it was terribly overpriced, I did some research and this was the equivalent. Damn, the "Can it run Crysis?" era was fun!

The HD 4870 was the first card I ever bought, having previously gotten by with integrated graphics. Kept it for four years until it died in early 2013. Bioshock Infinite was one of the last games I ever played through on it and I remember it being a pretty decent experience on my 900p monitor.

Finally waited dam long for this HD 4850 review. Can now roughly compare to my HD 4890 1GB version which I'm still using for retro gaming in a Xeon E5420 system. Not bad at all. BTW you should try 1080p in CSGO.

Great video! One question- what was your decision making process for choosing the 4870 driver instead of the other alternatives like 4860, or 4850 x2? I am just curious because I, too, was frustrated with finding the proper driver, and I never would have guessed to try a random card like 4870! It is so cool that you got it to work. Not enough youtubers talk about the annoying parts like driver headaches.

Mostly it's about the Windows itself and it's priorities. .(it didn't really worked with AMD that most as Nvidia. .) On Linux it's all pretty nice

Fun fact about the HD 4000 series, these were the first ever graphics cards to boast over 1 tflop of power, in an era where 200-300 gigaflops was still the standard.

In 2008 I bought the 4850x2 by Sapphire for 283 euros.... it lasted till 2017! It heated my house for cheap too... Sold it for 20 euros to a collector.... best card I ever had!

one of the reasons for the input lag is the high 99% GPU usage, the CPU is pushing a lot of frames more and stacking them in a queue, using in game frame limiter (not external) aiming to 96% GPU or less, will reduce the input lag, also you can force 1 CPU "frame ahead" using a third party tool like the old RadeonPro or similar

Please help, I cannot get HDMI video to work with this card...all I get is a black screen on my monitor...it works fine with the VGA port...I tired to play with the settings but all I get is a black screen when using the HDMI port...any help? Thanks.

Dude why you dont OC it? Those cards are really easy to oc really high! You could get rid of those stutters with oc!

I had a 4350 back in the day. It was when I gave up on PC gaming because the Xbox 360 was all I needed and people said PC gaming was dying. It was way worse than the 4850 and worse than pretty much every graphics card i had used for years before but i planned on not playing games on PC anymore. Eventually got a 5670 which was a great card for the cheap price. I'd love to see a mid range card again costing as little as the 5670 cost.

A 1080Ti é melhor mas já tem 4 anos, consome mais e não tem garantia... Se fosse um negócio de uma pessoa em que confiasses, tipo um primo ou amigo, sim, devias ter ficado com a 1080Ti. Sendo no OLX acho que fizeste bem em comprar uma gráfica nova, a 1080Ti pode ter sido usada para mining e pode estar a dar o berro, nunca se sabe!

actually for black ops II you should try a zombie map like City as it drops when you walk in the flames , i remember it killed the framerate on PS3 and on low-bandwith GPUs

HD 4870 was an awesome card but the only one which I used and stopped working after 3 years. I think the heat killed it as it was reaching 85c

@@zWORMzGaming just for refference if you want to wrap around the world with stock gtx3080 you need 1,406,140,351 cards to do that :D 40075km and a card is 28.5cm long :))

I still have ATI Radeon HD 4850 with me still, I got it from a dell 540 studio and sadly had to bottleneck a Ryzen 3700x with it until I could buy a decent card. ):

At least you can use the pc and it plays old games just fine! Back when the 1060 released I sold my old 760 a month prior, and I was stuck playing with radeon HD 3000 integrated graphics on the motherboard... It played tf2 at 40 fps using 640x480 resolution 😂

Interesting - does anyone know where that driver is? I cannot find neither the 4850 nor the 4870 drivers anywhere for Windows 10 (unless zWORMz is running these benchmarks on Windows 8) I have one myself and I'd like to use it as a side GPU
