OTB Thinker. I finally found a permanent location to mount my Zyliss Vise. this makes the vise even more versatile.

Hey Russ, just bought another Zyliss vise to add to my collection. It looked to be in pretty good condition by the photos I saw on Ebay on my phone, so I placed a bid, and won! With shipping it cost about 70 bucks. Not bad. When I received it, I was shocked. I think someone went to a Woodworking trade show and bought it, then put it on a shelf and never opened the box again. This thing is in absolutely perfect condition. Not a scratch, not a ding, no rust. The plastic clamp parts don't even have a scratch on them. I mean it is like museum quality. So glad I got it, I love those things.

Thanks. I just got one, unused and in the box. Your way of mounting it will work out for me, as I want to mount it in the elliptical cutout in my jewellers workbench.

I love the way your mind works. I paused the last video of yours that I watched, went on Ebay and bought a Zyliss. It's just arrived!!! So doing this. I think I'll make a couple of little V block pads for the clamp. Could be handy for clamping it on railing. Thanks!

I have a small stanley vise with a built in clamp, so it will work well. You could adapt your bar / handle to act as a holdfast if you add some threaded rod or a bolt to the end :)

i am still thinking of possible new ways of using this thing. I like your idea. I'm mounting one of these on my workbench (half done :>) I also discovered that my 3" jeweler vise clamps on there too. BTY, thanks for the compliment.

You sly devil.... that's so slick it's almost like cheating! I can definitely see that being handy, on the vacuum handle, on the side of a bench, and from the looks of it even on a standard 2x4 saw horse. I'm not sure I've ever heard the name Zyliss Vise before, but is surely something I hope to never forget, considering the shear usefulness of it as presented. Yet another benefit of your out of the box thinking, proving how much advantage you can take of the simple things, and use it in every which way to aid in creating. The simplest little (well big and beefy, but small footprint) pipe handle acting as the intended tilt handle, project support, clamp bracket, vise mount, outfeed guide, variable stronghold in any direction at any height... who'd a thunk it? And with the frequency of these ideas..... I can't even pick on you saying that you sat down all last week thinking of this, because you have presented like 5 similarly genius ideas, with commonly known devices. To know a fraction of the things you've forgotten would be inspiring. Thank you for being awesome, and kind enough to share!

+Charlie Tuna; thank you for your perspective on this man's GENIUS. Russ V. is such an inspiration. He makes ME think, observe, and question. I hope he gets a lot of views, especially by the younger generation. He is such a catalyst for innovation and sustainability that sadly, has been lost in this instant gratification, throw-away society.

These Zyliss vises were originally designed in Switzerland decades ago and now go by names such as the Oz vise, The Renovator and the Z vise which is the updated Zyliss vise. I remember seeing an infomercial back in the 70s (I wish that original infomercial was posted here on KZfaq) and ever since then I wanted one. Of course I was just a young kid still living at home, so when the price came up, (I think it may have been a couple of hundred dollars) I thought: "Oh well it was nice to dream." Flash forward to today, and I see a lot of posts on the Internet regarding the Zyliss vise. Apparently back in the day there was a Zyliss vise salesman at the woodworking trade shows named Jose who could sell ice cubes to Eskimos as the saying goes. Thanks to this salesman, many people bought these devices, and never really used them. You can find them on sites such as Ebay, OfferUp and Craigslist. I have in the past few months purchased two in my area! They were each 80 bucks and I just couldn't pass them up because both of them looked in just about new condition. The boxes were rotted out, but much of the hardware was still in sealed plastic bags, and both had the included drill press attachment which was not part of the original vise. You can see some demo videos here on KZfaq. If you see one in good shape for less than 100 bucks in your area, consider buying it, you won't regret it, if you put it to good use. BTW a brand new Z vise goes for 4 hundred bucks!

I stumbled across the old video of a pitch man selling these things like a snake oil salesman sellin tonic to a bald head man and thought to myself, "now that thing's sexier'n socks on a rooster". So, that put my finger on the trigger and I started looking in to'em further. Found a couple on the ebay, but before I pulled the trigger (that I was already startin' to squeeze in on), I happened upon YOUR video, and this video just made my finger twitch and I bought one a these this mornin! Great ideas for what seems will be an awful handy gadget to have! I reckon ebay owes you a debt'a gratitude my friend!

@davidr6585

@@russveinot5754 Full package? As far as I could tell. The guy only posted one photo of the device and components, but based on a few PDF manuals I could find, it looked like it's got all the parts it'sposed to have and a big plastic molded carry case. I believe it is the "Z-vise 2" What improvement are you talkin' about? The handle on that roll around shop vac box? That was a fan-dam-tastic idea! But what sold me is when you raised it up about chest high! I'm 6-4 and ain't seen too many work benches what's comfortable for me to use. You gave me an idea of takin' square tubin' an welding it to a big disk brake rotor for stability, and finding a smaller square tubin' to fit inside that other one so I can raise and lower the vise to fit my likein', my back'll sure 'preciate that!

there are a few accessories like the 2 or 3 soft jaws, there is a drill holder attachment so you can set up a mini lathe, and a couple of other items I can't remember. There are 6 or 7 videos on YT about the zyliss and the attachments. Anyway, if you got the "2" I suspect you have the full package. Did you see where I added a socket to the crank so I don't need to use the hand crank? maybe this calls for a quick video. If you like my adjustable bar idea, you will love my mini-bench. I used 2 of those bars to attach my mini to my main bench and can adjust the mini as high as 46" or as low and even with my workbench to give me an extension. I probably shouldn't have mentioned that . Now you have to go find my video about that :>) BTW, check out my adjustable sawhorses. They are made from the same tubing.

Hey David, I remember seeing the original Zyliss vise commercials back in the 80s (I think) and I remember thinking "man I got to have one of those". Of course back then, it was like seeing the original commercial for the Fein Multi-tool. That commercial is here on You Tube if you are interested in seeing it. They would get you all excited with the infomercial, then tell you the price at the very end. It would have been just as easy for me back then to afford a classic 59 Cadillac convertible as one of these tools. WAY OUT of my price range. Apparently there was some guy at woodworking shows who could "sell ice cubes to an Eskimo" as the saying goes, and he apparently sold a ton of these with his demos. Well many people took them home and used them once or twice and then they collected dust. I have bought 2 of them on Ebay or Craigslist and they were very affordable. One guy included a nice letter in the package. He explained it had belonged to his late father, and he wanted to keep it, but he had other treasures to remember his father by. He explained his father took great pride in his tools and his workshop, and it showed. The tool looked brand new. I sent him a message and told him that I promised I would take very good care of it, never abuse it and would pass it down to a niece or nephew who showed an interest in woodworking or other hobby where it could be used. You will not regret your purchase.

If you make yourself 4 V blocks, 2 on each clamp upper and lower on the pipe handle, you'll find it will clamp better without the need for the cheat bar. It won't clamp fully now because you gave a flat foot on a round bar. Cheat is a brilliant idea though especially for those with arthritic wrists and the likes.
