Back in 1993, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was one of the biggest shows, so, a season 2 was bound to happen. And we got it, with this new season giving us a new Ranger and new Megazords. But, did you know that this could’ve looked very different? Saban Entertainment and Japanese production company Toei was in talks of redesigning the Dino Zords & the White Tigerzord to make a redesigned Megazord & Mega Tigerzord, but what else can we find about Zyu 3?

Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger (恐竜戦隊ジュウレンジャー Kyōryū Sentai Jūrenjā, translated into English as Dinosaur Squadron Beast Ranger) is the sixteenth installment in the Super Sentai franchise and the first Super Sentai series to be adapted into an installment of the American Power Rangers series. Footage from all 50 episodes were extensively used for the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (abbreviated as "MMPR") is a live-action television and movie series based on the Super Sentai series Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, and is the first entry in the Power Rangers metaseries. The first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first aired on Fox Kids from August 28, 1993 to May 23, 1994. Although it was a children's series, it became an iconic part of 1990s pop culture.

It's amazing how much more ambitious the Zyu3 concept was compared to the final product. Season 2 honestly feels like the cheapest MMPR season given how many hiccups they had to smooth over (Thunder Megazord vs. Zyu2 monsters never actually being filmed, soundalike voices for 3 missing rangers, the conspicuous number of times the White Ranger is diverted for a filler fight during a zord battle).

actually now that you mention it este the remodeled dinozords/tigerzord would be perfect for an alternate universe comic book storyline. a timeline where the dinozords were upgraded into new dinozords. its a universe where the thunderzords were never made.

They should've adapted Dairanger. The transition would've been better. Especially because it wouldn't feel like Rocky is replacing Jason. And the same for the new cast coming in.

Right on, the new suits coming at the same time as the cast change would've made everything better. It would've made the whole trip to the "deserted planet" for the Sword of Power worth it.

The reason they didn’t was that Americanization was really big during those times and Dairanger was too ethnic with all of the Chinese themes, mythology and kung fu so instead they took elements from Dairanger instead of outright adapting it

@@goodbadntheazn1008 Actually the reason why it happened is because Saban still believed at that time that American audience is too familiar with original MMPR costume designs and not ready for that radical change in their look. You can find more info about it in the Power Rangers episode of "The Toys That Made Us" (Netflix).

Well, since the first Power Rangers movie (1995) was similar to the show but still set in a different universe (though not as drastically different from the 2017 reboot), one can conceivably pretend that the Zords from Zyu3 were that universe's versions of the Dinozords before the movie took place. Head-canon can be a fun thing.

Kinda strange that Zyu3 would have still add the TigerZord, albeit redesigned, instead of just upgrading the DragonZord. Regardless, I'd really love to see these alternate zords resurface as modern collector figures.

Saban was likely aware of the Kakuranger mech and was planning on incorporating Kiba Ranger so that Tommy could pilot the white Falconzord . I don't think Zyu2/Zyu3 was meant to be indefinite just meant to take the place of Dairanger before Saban decided just giving the Zyurangers the Dairanger mecha was cheaper

We've kinda gotten the zord builder-like integration thanks to the Comics (the Gravezord x Dino Megazord Combo I feel like was the firmest nod to the Zyu3 concepts, honestly. I can't wait to see what they do with the Dragonzord now that its making a return alongside the Thunderzords in the current run).

We actually got a combo of zords from different Sentai. Titanus was brought back in MMPR Season 3 and combined with the Ninja Zords.

Titanus, Ninja Zords, and the Shogun Zords are from different sources. So they had no footage to use, and using the toys was cheap.

Saying any zord "combines" with Titanus is kinda of a stretch. Even with the DinoZords, the MegaZord more so rode Titanus.

Exactly, if they weren't going to change the suits along with everything else, they might as well have used these new Dinozords, since they would've still matched the suits. They could've made a Dragonzord as well.

I never got why they didn't use the Dairanger costumes for the Dark Rangers instead of the terrible costumes they used for them. Could have even justified their appearance in that Zedd was trying to mimic the White Ranger's powers. Maybe they didn't have time to refit them to their actors?

I went to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers LIVE show. It was one of the most amazing things I EVER experienced as a kid. I feel so fortunate to be able to go to that. I still have the video and program from it. Ahh, the memories.

Did you know that the legacy collection gave us a hint at what that combination might look like? So, there were remnants of zyu three combinations in the Legacy toy line. That was a pretty cool Easter egg in my opinion.

I’m more or less cool with how things played out mostly with what we’ve gotten over the years. With that said, if they had ever considered bringing back the original power for a spin off per say. I think they could bring in those designs and find excuse to bring back the lot of the mmpr 1, 2 and 3 zords. Just a matter of how they play then in.

Those zords look so good, pretty sad we didn’t get to see these in the show. It would’ve been nice to see unique zyu-ranger like zords for the show, rather than the other zords we ended up getting. I mean, I like the ninja powers and zords, but they didn’t fit the feel of the Dino-themed ranger suits.

I agree with you, those updated looks of the dinozords and Tigerzord would’ve looked better in the MMPR ‘95 movie than what they went with so I’m okay with them not going through with the Zyu 3 footage. As for seasons 2 and 3; I think along with the changing of the zords, should’ve came the changing of the uniforms. Since season 2 used the Dairanger mechs, they should’ve used the uniforms too because White Dairanger with the core 5 Zyurangers didn’t look right to me. And season 3 using the Kakuranger mechs, should’ve used the uniforms as well because going from their ninja power suits to the Kakuranger uniforms would’ve looked better to me and it made more sense being Ninja themed. Those are my only gripes about MMPR seasons 2 and 3, so they rank below season 1 for me. Other than that, I still love the Mighty Morphin season as a whole.

You're right for the most part! Using the Kakuranger suits would have required them to recolor the white one pink and add a new white suit (for a male ranger)!

They should put those zords in the comics. It would be a good way to bring them into the Power Rangers lore. I like the idea of making them part of the comics line up of zords.

Agreed. Admittedly, DaiRanger had a green ranger on the main team instead of a black one, but hey, no reason Tommy couldn't have piloted the Lion ThunderZord, with instead Zack taking up the new white ranger powers or else leaving the team entirely to make room for a new character.

I loved the zords they had but I think they should have changed or even done it like they done with future seasons where they used one Zoe’s as there main but when they either they got a real sting bad guy or multiple bad guys to fight then they could of had both Zord versions out but yes it would have been sick to seen the new version or zords and it would have been maybe nice to up date the suits also maybe into the version that was with the white ranger when they got there thunder zords in the senti season 2 that been cool

The "White Tigerzord" could of been "White Sabertooth Tigerzord", which then fits into the Dinozords.

It's clear that they were like "okay, we need the lightning bolt on the new Megazord idea so our toys are accurate to the show" since they had a habit of replacing random stickers with lightning bolts. They would then have logically called it the Thunder Megazord. When Saban decided to just use the pre-existing mecha footage from Dairanger to save money, the designs were scrapped but evidently they kept the concept. It makes far too much sense for the Zords to be transformed into upgraded forms of the same animals than the Zyu mecha becoming the Dai Mecha. I will say, the idea of the Megazord using parts of their config to mirror Ranger weapons like the bow, was a good one. I think the window of time was too small to introduce a whole new set, since thry already knew by the time of the Zyu3 designs that a movie was being planned.

While I did not know enough about the features, I learned of that image upon researching differences between Super Sentai and Power Rangers (the pandemic brought me to watching the Japanese shows.) As for being featured, I love all the ideas mentioned. If I can give an additional one, I heard of a scene of Tommy's desk featuring an image of the Dairanger badge. I think it would be neat to have this image somewhere as an Easter egg in the show.

I would have liked if they just used the Dairanger footage with the new ranger suits. It would have fit better with the Thunderzords and white ranger and also maybe cost less than shooting new footage with Zyu (MMPR) together with the white ranger.

I have no idea. I want to say kid me in 1994 would have liked or even preferred the upgraded dinozords, but at the same time I did and do really, REALLY love the thunderzords. They felt like a logical continuation, especially Kim’s, and my dinosaur phase was pretty much over by then anyway. As an adult now, yeah… give me Dairanger all the way. Even give us the suits, I like them much better than zyuranger. Although I do think that white ranger figure you showed with the diamonds is absolutely genius!

I’m not too bothered we didn’t get Zyu3, I just wish they’d used the Zyu2 footage as it was made and delayed the introduction of the Thunderzords so we didn’t all that early Season 2 crappy spliced together Megazord battles where you never see anything touch anything else!

I'm a HUGE Power Ranger fan since 2011 and which I was born in the year 2006 and never grew up watching MMPR-RPM until 2011 when Samurai aired on Nick and I'm also a Super Sentai,Japanese BL,J-Pop,and Magical Girls fan. I'm just a 14 year old girl who loves Power Rangers and Super Sentai more.

If you watch during the White Ranger arc in Season 2, when Billy peeks through the vent and the alpha is working on teh white ranger on the table - the white ranger suit has white diamonds. Similar to the super legends figure

I do not know if this is true or not, it is something I heard back in the day, but there was almost a plan to have the rangers go costume changes as well but with Tommy still being the green ranger when it happened and the next sentai series having a green on the main team it was also scarped so they kept the old suits
