A lot of younger folks never heard the originals, as I played his Naturally cd for my daughter and son-in-law on a trip to Colorado several years ago and they couldn’t believe those were the originals, only knowing the covers by Clapton and Skynyrd! The thing about ZZ Top is that they are very decidedly TEXAS. The have a "sounds like this" and a "feels like that", but the reason why you can't quite put your finger on them, Lex, is that they embody Texas. Texas ain't southern, it's Texas. Texas is not western, it's Texas. ZZ Top, is Texas. RIP Dusty.

The birds come out to sing along when I play this one in my backyard. Must be something about the note frequencies hit by the slide. When you're ready for more from ZZ Top, check out their cover of the Sam & Dave classic "I Thank You". It's hard and gritty with one of the meanest guitar tones you'll ever hear. And the break in "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" will likely catch you off guard too. "Cheap Sunglasses" is another banger that'll make you want to sell your car and buy a truck.

The guitar solo and lead parts, in case you didn't know, are played with a slide. Instead of fingering the notes, a small tube is worn on one finger, usually made of metal (often brass), glass or ceramic, and slid up and down the strings. It's often used in blues and blues rock. The old blues players would often use a beer, soda or whiskey bottle and hold it, or an old fashioned glass pill bottle... or whatever else they had that worked.

They are essentially blues based rock with a Texas country twang, especially their earlier stuff. But they grew up listening to outlaw radio stations, which broadcasted from Mexico with really high powered transmitters so half of America could pick them up, and these stations played a huge variety of stuff that you didn't hear on mainstream stations in the U.S. Also, Billy Gibbons' (lead singer, guitar player) babysitter used to take him to various venues in the city as a child where he was exposed to lots of great music. So a lot of various influences get mixed into their music. Billy was also in a psychedelic rock band in the '60s called Moving Sidewalks, which toured with Jimi Hendrix.

When I worked in a shop that made modular buildings every Friday I would play this song at 10 AM as we went on break. That’s when they handed out our paychecks… You need to listen to more early ZZ Top, try Francine, Heard it on the X, Balinese, and I’m Bad I’m Nation Wide.
