Hello Ms Harris... I know I'm late but... I know a little about rural lifestyle and these old houses. I have imagined my own ancestors coming to Charleston, and then to the American South, coming from the Emerald Isle, famous for no snakes, to this environment where you drop on the food chain as soon as you step off the back porch. Anyway, I'm sure you know the South used to be lush with Long Leaf Pine and big Cypress. Maybe some Oak. And when you think about the Circular saw being invented in 1830... think of how exciting this time must have been for the original builders! Yes about the generations since, but those original builders had some... guts. Anyway.. I'll follow along. Btw... You are so right about anchovies in the Mac n Cheese.

@@dancranor3586 love the description you show of those traveling and settling in the South. You know, I never thought about the fact this was the date of the circular saw being invented. I’m so glad you’ll be following along!

I'm in Texas, sweet tea and Dr Pepper are staples. I have never in my life seen anyone put baking soda in sweet tea. What is that for? I put 1 1/2 cup sugar per gallon and everyone tells me it's not sweet enough.
@StacyLynHarris10 күн бұрын
The baking soda helps keep the tea clear and keeps the tea from becoming bitter. It only takes a little pinch. I’ll bet your tea is delicious! You’re from TX - it’s gotta be! My grandmother’s was like syrup she put so much sugar in it. It was good but potent! I like it with a little less sugar.

I grew up in the South, My grand mother was a member of The Daughters Of The American Confederacy. She could throw a spread of food on the table that was the very best food I ever ate. Back then, she would go go and get some fresh ground corn meal and make corn bread in the oven. Along with the corn bread we had fresh churned country butter of which nothing sold in the stores would come close to its taste. She would always hang a salt cured ham up stairs for maybe 5-6 months and allow it to cure. You can't find hams like that anymore. By any chance, do you know how to make southern punch? If you do I would appreciate it much as to how to make it. Thanks :-)

My wife and I watch a lot of design and build shows from the UK. While they have some good ideas, they rarely have any color or warmth to their designs. I guess I'm bias, but I like houses that are warm and welcoming. You have made that space very inviting.
