Just finished watching upright for the 3rd time, so well written. Man is a genius. would love to learn this, don't suppose you have the midi file? looked everywhere and this video is the closest I have found. I have listened to your cover on repeat for hours on end, thank you for posting.

What's this type of jazz called?
@fresamouse
@fresamouse 6 күн бұрын
The short answer is "bebop," which tends to involve a lot of complex flowing melodic lines, rhythmic call and response, small band improvisation, and often a simple understandable 32 bar harmonic structure. Here Patrick Bartley is taking inspiration from musicians like Cannonball Adderly, Miles Davis etc.

Well in “pop” playing you rarely play outside and in this solo he’s playing fairly in the changes. So I assume you think Dexter Gordon, bird, coltrane, and literally every other old cat as “pop” players?

Can someone explain the harmony of the intro?
@fresamouse
@fresamouse 3 ай бұрын
sure thing. so Emmet is essentially starting midway through the B section of the melody. In the song, the chord progression repeats twice, except for the change of that second time variation it lingers on the ii minor chord (Cm - G7 - Cm) tonicsizing it with the dominant, instead of a 2 5 1 into the tonic as it does the first time. He's basically starting on the lyric "someday when you feel lonely." as playing through almost the entire second half of the changes as the intro ( Cm / G7 / Cm / Ebm7 Ab7 / Bb / Am7(b5) D7 / Gm / Gdim7 / Dm7 / G7 / Cm7 / F7 / Bb / / / E+7 )

Patrick is amazing. Interestingly, most of his solo is totally inside the harmony; no crazy substitutions or exotic scales. Just chromaticism and a freaking amazing technique to explore everything possible. Simple, but far from easy. By the way, good job on the transcription

I believe the transcription shown in the video is in concert pitch (C). You need to transpose it to Eb to get the right transcription. To transpose it, you have to write every note up a major sixth. The key also changes. Concert pitch is in E, therefore Patrick is playing in the key of Db.

that's true. especially when you've spent years crafting your specific sound, and have certain choices you lean to melodically. you are keenly aware of your own palette, you can't help but make something sound "good" to your own ears. like you can't cook a meal for yourself and deliberately make it disgusting.
