For less work on the hide, and a better looking carcass, try peel the hide before you gut. Takes 5 minutes. Basicly, make you opening cuts and from the asshole to chin, chest to hooves, cutting the front legs along the front of them, asshole to hooves , the back legs along the back side of them to the hooves. Then use your hands and peel the skin from the meats and fats, leaving the fats and connective tissue on the animals and a clean hide with no blood on the flesh side. Ive done thousands of Caribou this way over the last 35 years and its the fastest, easiest, cleanest way to do it.

Lol the bark grows back 5 years, if it wasn't intended for us to take it wouldn't be there.

No es necesario quitarle la corteza al árbol, existen otras técnicas sin dañar la naturaleza.

I dont think he realizes that the gut bag has to be taken out within minutes of the kill or the meat will taste like the gut smells, also he is going about it wrong.

Wow, 30 caribou in and I never noticed that ;) Your first statement is completely wrong, and your second statement is subjective. Everybody processes their animals in a slightly different way, but the rules of meat care will always be the same

People from every culture can skin better if they have practiced. I have met many people from many cultures who have never processed and animal at all

Hi, this is the best vid on sustainable birch bark harvesting I have ever seen, but I have a question. if I wanted to harvest from a live standing tree, is the trick to leave the corky cambium layer intact? Can or should you harvest the entire perimeter of bark? I believe it does not matter. Thanks for the detailed video.
@brianschuch77843 жыл бұрын
Yes, leave the inner bark. Outer can be taken in full diameter.

Early summer is the best time to harvest off live trees. Well... the bark comes off the easiest but the bugs will eat you alive.

First video of how to take the organs out also are you putting the meat in trash bags?
@brianschuch77843 жыл бұрын
nope, only in game bags. I do not like meat in plastic. Getting your meat to quickly dry and case on the outside is important and the meat needs airflow to do that.

I have watched a half-dozen other tutorials on harvesting birch bark, and yours is the only one that THOROUGHLY covers the process, from A to Z. Thank you!

You have to plug it up at the end by whittling the end of a stick so the tree does not get infected (I think)
@brianschuch77844 жыл бұрын
Yup! This footage was not put in the video, but I cut the tap flush with the tree at the end and plug it with a stick that I also cut flush. You can pitch sap it afterwards if you want

Brian, This is the first of your videos that I have seen. All these years since you had not only the dream in high school, but also the skill set. I was a bit surprised to see the electric drill, rather than something you had hand-knapped, for drilling the hole, but then you made the birch bark tap, and I saw that you still have the old-school skills. Good to see you still have the same enthusiasm I remember.
