An above average snowpack is based on the last 30 years. So lower snow pack levels set a downward trend for the average. In other words a 100% snowpack in 1960 is more snow than a 100% snowpack in 2024. Of note we have passes peak runoff, the Colorado River at Loma (15 miles east of the Utah border) is receding. Yesterday 06.12.24 was the hottest day of the year so far at 100 degrees +/- in Grand Junction. While we have a couple more weeks of runoff, the flow rate will be declining.

Why doesn't anyone ever talk about the massive quantity of water that's diverted through tunnels from the Colorado River basin to eastern Colorado?? Above average snowpack, yet less water going down stream doesn't add up. It's all going to Denver and the front range. I'm fact, 40% of the front range water supply is Colorado River water that should be filling up Powell and Mead. There's plenty of water supplied by nature, is mankind causing the problems. When these reservoirs were created, the river basin was in an exceptionally wet period and there was an abundance. There's a lot of sources that say they didn't know back then, but there's a lot of proof that they did and carried out these projects for the economic benefits they brought. We were in a drought for just over a decade, but right now, were back to the average flow. People need to stop moving to the desert where there's no resources, and stop moving to the Front Range of Colorado where there's no water. Besides, all the new environmentalists moving here are trashing the Forrests and ruining camp sites on top of bringing Californias traffic jams with them.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. Every river that flows into the ocean in Oregan and Washington should be captured and piped into Glen Canyon. Rivers than flow into the ocean in California should be captured and piped into Lake Mead. These two actions would save everyone from drought in the Southwest US and Northern Mexico. Follow the money to see why this isn't being done.

That's not a practical idea. We'll assume the thousand-mile long pipe is somehow free. Let's look at one river in Washington, the Columbia River: its outflow is about 2 million gallons of water per second. It takes a lot of energy to pump that water from the rivers exit at sea level to the 3700 feet of Lake Powell. To do that requires pumps, and those pumps need power. About 23 GW/h of power. The power created by the dams in the Pacific Northwest is already spoken for, so new power would have to be produced. About the only thing that can do the job is nuclear power, and would require at least 30 or so reactors (they can't all be online at the same time). And we haven't even touched the destruction of the pacific northwest's salmon and fishing industries, which are extremely valuable.

I'm going to laugh if whilst they are drilling holes they destroy the whole dam. If the Colorado River can't provide water to the lower reaches we're going to destroy the environment up stream, killing off the trees and bushes that retain water so next year we can retain less water and exacerbate the problem into the future? It's almost like literally everyone involved in government doesn't actually know anything. Oh, well, America will fall. One way or another.

If they want to keep more water in the dam, they should keep more water.
@MrWhipple42
@MrWhipple42 Күн бұрын
Water isn't kept "in the dam": it's kept in the reservoir behind the dam. And they can just "keep it," since the dam needs water flowing through it to generate electricity and because each dam has obligations to release water for downstream use.

No coating is going to be able to stop the "corrosion" from cavitation. Maybe now that the phenomenon is not so openly understood, a way to work with nature could be found, but working with nature questions the whole purpose of the dam in the first place. Tampering with nature on so many levels never ends well.

Hey why not siphon it over the top? Would need pumps and valves to get going, then only valves to moderate the spill. That would be a bit of an engineering adventure, but it could probably be cheaply or easily brought in from city fab shops. Another track, how come they can’t refurbish those 4 defective pipes, one or two at at a time, proper steel? Hey did Kiewit use any what we call adhesives, like that proposed epoxy in this case, on their Oroville dam spillways restoration?

Besides a drought history. Water is ground saturation and water table filling. CIPP lining the pipes may be beneficial, however, building tunnels is a major concern. This will directly be more claustrophobic to downstream users. Perhaps one of the issues with the lake the dam system upstream and around it. We are starving the natural flow of the water to the lower states.

How is water wasted because of these dams?? If the dams were not there the water would flow straight to the Pacific Ocean and far less would be available to the 24 million people in the lower basin area of the Colorado River. That's how dams work to hold water to support those millions of people and especially the agriculture throughout the region.

Surprise, surprise. People who know little to nothing about climatology but feel comfortable pinpointing what will happen next where wrong. Climate change is happening and will continue. But people who want to pretend they know what they are talking about without doing the work and those that have done the work but want to be first to “break the story” for attention need to do the right thing. That includes attention seeking PhD’s.

I think the stats on the San Luis reservoir are misleading. It's not on a natural water flow, and has nothing to do with up-mountain snowpack. It's a pump-fed lake. Oroville is discharging excess water, but it is NOT being transferred into San Luis...which it could be...in a round-about sort of way. At any rate, it is disconnected from precipitation. Why is it under-filled? Human decisions, not "natural" causes.
