Gentiles, non-descendants of Jacob, were always able to be grafted in. As the good news went out to the nations… gentiles would come in along with the scattered sheep from the house of Israel. Jesus didn’t teach replacement theology. It was the tenants that were replaced with new leadership. The partial hardening would be necessary for Jesus to conquer death on the cross through the resurrection.

Questioning "why" implies an anthropocentric bias, since it attributes human properties to the Universe by projecting our own purpose-seeking animal instincts. The clock only has purpose when related to ourselves. It has purpose FOR those of us able to see and read the time, it has no purpose for anyone unable to. The reason living beings seek purpose is because it's evolutionary beneficial to their survival (it's a trait that survived by natural pressure). And giraffes are actually purpose driven too, they seek food, safety, companionship, pleasure, those are purposes. But you can't say the same about inanimate things, or the Universe as a whole. Why would there exist a purpose (a "why") in Nature outside of the one that emerges from life itself? You can't apply a "why" to that without projecting a biased narrative that makes the assumption that somehow it all revolves around the needs of living beings like us... because that's what our brain is programmed by natural evolution to seek. But the reality is that the more we discover about nature, the more we realize that we are insignificant when compared to all that lies beyond our noses.
