‘…you’re looking for control to get up to the net and pop to finish the point offs’ - This statement sums up this paddle! Great review as usual Luca; really enjoying this paddle so far!
@Tal137 күн бұрын
Hey Luca! Appreciate your attention to detail here. Question... I come from a casual tennis background and have only played pickleball a few times. Want my own paddle and this notion of handle length is confusing to me. Do you prefer standard or elongated paddles? I do generate spin and my own power, so control is preferred. Thanks for the video!

Luca you are such knowledgeable in the techniques of pb. Great review as always learnt many new things

It's interesting how you explain why the spin suffers on this one. It's most interesting because I'm comparing it to the Spartus Apollo, which is even more clunky. Yet may have the highest spin of any paddle currently on the market. The Apollo also has a stiffer feel with less dwell time so you would think less time to impart spin? The Apollo is 100% kevlar, so maybe the blended carbon and kevlar combo is more responsible for the lack of spin than the clunky shape?
@terogan7 күн бұрын
John Kew has the Apollo at 2130 RPM & Fat Boy at 2069 RPM so still top tier, just not elite. But he has the Apollo at 34.2 MPH Punch Volley and the Fat Boy at 36.3 MPH. Overall he has the Apollo 24 pts higher in his Control rating (beta) and the FB 30 pts higher in his Firepower rating.
@waynekurtz6607 күн бұрын
@terogan yes I get that, but follow the logic used for the lower spin only. If you use the data you just provided, then the Apollo should have a lower spin. Because In his reasoning, the clunky shape and higher twist weight were taken away from spin potential. Usually, additional dwell time increases spin, so in every metric following this reasoning, the Apollo should have less spin than the Fat Boy.... but it is higher spin. I'm just suggesting his reasoning provided for the spin doesn't exactly track, and the blended material might be more of the culprit than the twist weight and clunky shape. Think Mach 2 forza again, similar shape & twist but elite spin.
@65atBestPB6 күн бұрын
@@waynekurtz660 Yeah … my guess is with current paddle tech spin mainly comes down to how much grit (think sandpaper), more so than any dwell time. I did watch Chris Olson’s slow motion video of paddle and ball compression, but how much difference can there be between different brands plastic cores? (putting different tech like Gearbox and 3rd gen to the side). In tennis, it turned out that how much the mains (string) splayed out at contact and snapped back before ball left strings played a huge part in the resulting topspin. Gut mains paired with slick poly crosses produced significantly more spin than full gut. But … no strings in wiffle. So … not sure … at the moment it might simply be max grit equals max spin. I could easily clean off all of our Vatic (big fan of Vatic and Daryl) paddles after a session with a dry microfiber cloth (Prism Flash a little more difficult), but I have to wet the microfiber cloth to clean off the Apollo. I can’t wait until we move past the equivalent of table tennis sandpaper paddle era. And although I am not interested in paying anyone $300 for a paddle, at least Joola was an early move away from surface grit only tech. Same with Oni, Ripple … sandpaper can’t be the endpoint. Tech like Reload gets at the “replacing part that wore out” … like tennis racquet restringing, but still left in sandpaper era.

Have you tried the 14mm scorpeus? Looks like it has less grit than the 16mm but more pop?

How would you compare this to the shogun? I’m torn between the 2 😅
@barney99977 күн бұрын
There are numerous differences between the Shogun and FatBoy, the most obvious being the shape. If your new-ish to pickleball and play mostly doubles, go with a widebody or standard shape to make it easier to learn the soft game and also for its easier maneuverability.

I play with both the Filth and Shogun. I’d favor the Shogun as more of an all court paddle - it’s slightly less power than Filth but I think I get more control than the Filth. This review says the spin is lacking - that would be a deal killer for me.

Get the shogun!
@terogan7 күн бұрын
As an ambassador, the Shogun has overtaken the discontinued (for now) Loco as the most often bought paddle, especially by those with a tennis background. I use the Fat Boy as I love doing backhand flicks at the net. The two have similar spin. Shogun higher power from baseline and almost equal pop. But the Shogun just feels different. If you can find a local rep who has both then try them. But if you’re in the states then you can buy the one you think fits you best and have 30 days to love it or return it. Not sure how that works with R&R in Canada.

TLDR: This new paddle design is fascinating! The creativity behind the weave pattern really shows. I'm curious if different patterns could influence play styles. What if we had circular weaves or even pixel art designs? It would be amazing to see someone have full reign over these designs and test their impact on gameplay. Thoughts? Im not in the space enough to be able to say this with confidence but bread and butter seem to have some REALLY creative leadership, its amazing to see that creativity show the the weave of this paddle, i want to see whoever this person is have full reign on the design of the weave pattern and then see if the end up having to make an optimal pattern. for example, imagine that instead of the zig zags going in one direction (i call this direction R1) these zig zag lines curve into each other to form circles, OR whatever pattern is most common could work too. id imagine a reference point being the answer to: How many circle patterns do you need and where should the centers be placed? but i bet some peoples playstyles would benefit off of more square or rectangular patterns, all types of shaped really could be added and tested, you could even do pixel art in the weave pattern. of course, this is all assuming that whoever made that weave pattern can in fact change how the material is weaved. also if Bread and Butter are reading this...need a paddle tester?

This doesn't make sense. For carbon fiber paddles, the wide bodies are control for beginners and the elongated ones are harder to use power paddles for advance. Why is it backwards?

Luca, I really hope they are paying you well at the store. You should have your own channel and be a full time paddle reviewer. By far one of the best KZfaq. I bought the J7K form you guys and it feels like it was built specifically for me. I was using the Vatic Prism flash before and thought I made a mistake by ordering the J7K, mainly because the J2K was always out of stock. I am so happy with the J7K. The control and power combination is exactly what I had hoped for. This review only reinforces how I feel about this paddle. Thanks for another great video. Keep them coming!

That’s interesting what you said about their stability. I’m guessing the vast majority of people will find the J3K the most stable, and the J7K the least stable. Most people correlate stability with anti-twisting sensation that comes from having a high twistweight. It sounds like maybe your sense of stability comes from a higher swingweight? More plow through?

@douglasmurdoch724711 күн бұрын
He’s definitely a little confused on that one. The J3K has a higher twistweight, and twistweight is the source of stability, and sweet spot size. There’s no way the very long and skinny J7K is more stable and has a bigger sweet spot than the wide body J3K.
