cab you explain the setup for this? im so confused as to how u got so many attacks on karlach and deal so much damage but other than that its pretty cool
@theophrastus1493

Sure, I'll try to break it down as best I can: Actions: Karlach is an 11th level fighter with a statline of 8 STR, 20 DEX, 16 CON, 8 INT, 12 WIS, 8 CHA. For every attack action they take, they can make 3 attacks. She is using Arrows of Many Targets for each of those 3 attacks, which halves the damage of each attack, but allows it to affect up to 4 units (effectively doubling the total damage of each attack). So with this in mind, how did we give Karlach more than 1 action to attack? 1) Use of the Haste spell (in this case applied with a potion of speed), that gives a free second action (3 more attacks) 2) Because Karlach is a fighter, they can have the unique ability to Action Surge (giving them a free action on their current turn) So that's why karlach has 3 actions. However, we can go a bit further. The illithid ability "Mind sanctuary" allows characters in a given space to take actions as bonus actions, which allows Karlach to convert their bonus action into another attack action, for 3 more attacks. In total, that gives us 4 attack actions, each of which involves 3 attacks, for a total of 12 attacks. Damage: I already mentioned the Arrows Of Many Targets but there are a large number of modifiers applied that increase the damage of EACH attack Karlach makes. You'll see a number of different damage types in the log. I'll break them down in a second but it's important to realize that these additional damage modifiers are applied AFTER the Arrow Of Many Targets halves the base damage of the attack. This effectively means that these damage values aren't halved at all, they're just applied each once to every creature that is hit by an Arrow Of Many Targets. Okay, now for damage numbers. Karlach is using a Longbow called the Titanstring Bow. It has a base damage value of 1d8+(Karlach's Dexterity Modifier, in this case, 5). However the Titanstring Bow is unique cuz it also adds Karlach's Strength Modifier to its damage. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal but Karlach drank a Potion of Storm Giant Strength. Her Strength Score is 27, so she has a +8 bonus to damage. The total damage of each attack is now 1d8+5+8. From there, there are a number of elemental damage types: * The Lightning damage comes from "Elemental Weapon: Lightning" which, in our case was applied via the Drakethroat Glaive (can be bought from the bugbear merchant in moonrise towers) * The Poison damage comes from The Broodmother's Revenge Necklace, which adds an addition 1d4 poison damage to weapon attacks for a time after you've been healed, which we did before we started the fight. * The Radiant damage comes from The Morninglord's Blessing (you get it from successfully completing the puzzle which requires you to lay all the ceremonial weapons on their respective podiums in the Mountain Pass Temple of Lathandar). I think it's "supposed" to last until the end of your next long rest, but if you dismiss a party member then re-invite them to the party, they can get it back. * The Thunder Damage is Phalar Aluve: Shriek (a debuff that causes enemies to take an additional 1d4 thunder damage from every attack). It's important to realize as well that many of these instances of damage also re-apply the bonus from Titanstring Bow. so Phalar Aluve: Shriek doesn't deal 1d4 extra thunder damage, it deals 1d4+8. This isn't the case for each fo the elemental damage types listed above, but it increases the damage substantively. I honestly do not know exactly which ones duplicate the Titanstring Bow's bonuses, so sadly can't communicate that to you here. The Titanstring bow's bonus also applies AFTER the damage of an attack is halved by Arrows Of Many Targets, again multiplying the damage. like with each of the elemental damage types. The total damage any one enemy attacked with an Arrow Of Many Targets takes then is (((1d8+5)/2) + 1d4 + 1d4 + 1d4 + (1d4 + 8) + 8), which is a lot. This is one attack, it will happen 12 times. Finally, two more abilities come into play: * Another Illithid power is used, called Perilous Stakes. It creates an effect that, should an enemy fail a Wisdom saving throw, they are now Vulnerable to all damage they take for a few rounds (I think it's 2?). This doubles the damage in the damage calculation above. * Hold Monster is used to Paralyze Raphael, a condition that causes attacks against a creature to automatically become critical hits should those attacks be made within 5ft of the creature. This again doubles the damage in the damage calculation above. One cherry on top here as well is that when you fire an Arrow Of Many Targets, should the first attack of the arrow critically strike, all of them will, even though I believe they are supposed to be individual attack rolls. Final attack calculation: (((1d8+5)/2) + 1d4 + 1d4 + 1d4 + (1d4 + 8) + 8)*4 for Raphael (since they are affected by Perilous Stakes and no one else is, which is an average of like 124 damage (here's a link to a website if you want a deeper breakdown of that damage calculation: anydice.com/program/34a23). All other affected creatures are taking about 62 damage (anydice.com/program/34a25). So each attack until Raphael dies is dealing 310 damage (124 + (62*3)) and from then on each attack is dealing 248 damage on average (62*4) This is happening 12 times, so ignoring the fact that Raphael is afflicted by Perilous Stakes, the total damage Karlach deals can deal with this setup (as long as she continues to attack paralyzed targets within 5ft of her) with Arrows Of Many Targets is 248*12, or 2976, not accounting for any resistances or anything, of which I don't think these creatures have any. Hope this helps. That's all the important stuff for damage. There were a few more buff spells cast (like Aid or Bless) but they're not as relevant as everything above.

@@ariane19. Yea, totally understandable! most of the stuff in the video isn't necessary nor is easily accessible/obvious haha. This was mainly just a showcase of how much my friend and I could explode the game's numbers. Raphael being one of the more demanding fights gave us a good measuring tool. We intend the video to be more of a showcase than something that is reasonable or practical for people to do on their first playthrough ^-^ . This video was recorded during my third playthrough of the game for reference. Glad you enjoyed the video and are having fun!!! Good luck to you and your Tav on your future adventures :D

When it came out back in the nineties I thought it was bloody brilliant, and don't think anyone has pulled off a story arc with the confidence JMS did with B5! Hell, he drops plot points, and threads from the earliest episodes of the first season, many that don't even come into play until the third but when they all come together the series really takes off. Yes the effects and set are dated but I still recommend B5 to anyone who likes well-written sci-fi.

I believe she was just a 12th Level fighter. She might have had the Amulet of Greater Health, but she definitely had a high level Aid cast on her. Stats were something like 8 STR, 20 or 22 DEX (I don't remember if we did this before or after the , 16 CON, 8 INT, 12 WIS, 8 CHA. She had drank an Elixir of Cloud Giant strength so that was temporarily 27 (we opted for that over the elixir of bloodlust). Let me know if there's any more you'd like to know!

Keep in mind while reading the damage numbers that he is vulnerable to all the damage being dealt, as well as the fact number of dice being rolled is doubled because all the attacks against Raphael are turned into crits. One thing I'm sad I forgot to do is have the chat log be set to recent so you can see each of the hits individually. I got caught up in the moment. Sorry, Hope this helps!
