I'm gonna be honest. I like this show, I like Oneyplays, but this episode was just weird...

maybe he had a good reason to not return. What if it was because he is busy working on his thesis to graduate and you live far away or something random like that?

not a great take since Domi's chords are really fast and cool, but i think this song has the best outline yet

this is interesting to me most of the endings of each episode have some kind of positive message attached to them this one didn't really feel like it did this one felt like his brother just instantly 180d after his homunculus hatched, it's not like it got professor psychotic a job or made him a better roommate he's just like ah yes now I should treat my brother like an actual human being because his homunculus hatched?? it doesn't feel genuine. there... there doesn't seem to be any real self-discovery in this ending like most other episodes edit: after seeing the episode in full, there's sort of a positive message in this one, sure, but it feels shallow and heavy-handed. I'm pretty sure a person in Doug's situation would see that and still be angry that Kevin put so much effort into something he sees as useless and saw it through to the end. i mean, imagine that much time, money, and energy invested in a real career! plus now he has to work to support both his brother AND this homonculus he wasted all this time making. to be clear, Doug DOES have his problems, and he's not completely in the right. it IS hard to find a job right now, and it's NOT okay to shit on someone's hobby like that. but he has a point, and the homonculus hatching doesn't nullify it. a much better plot would have been to have Kevin really try to turn his life around, get a career, learn to talk to people - maybe they felt like that would tread too close to the shrimp episode. but the shrimp episode worked for a reason. smiling friends, historically, is kind of about learning how to be both functional and happy as an adult, accepting yourself, finding joy in simple things - this ending doesn't satisfy that. they found joy in something small and silly, sure, but it's painfully clear that they're both still dysfunctional. this is the first episode where i can say the writing in general feels cheap. i figured it was going to happen eventually, not everything's going to be a hit, of course - I just hope it doesn't become a pattern

This is a reach, but I think it somehow relates to toxic couples stay together because of kids as well as pass on generational trauma. Obviously they're brothers not a couple, but the vibes at the end were very sus.

(You can save some time by just listening to The story of an artist by Daniel Johnston instead of reading the wall of text below 👇) This is actually the classic story of an artist who follows his dream instead of conforming to society and getting a dead end job. Where usually the family and society pulls the artist in one direction but his passion for art pulls him in the opposite direction, which tears him apart and is ultimately forced to choose between his art or his family. When he chooses art over his family (which they usually do in these types of stories) it's not until his art has made a real impact on the world that his family is capable of understanding the beauty of his art and why it was so important to him. Like happened to his brother when he saw that he was actually capable of creating a sentient and talking little critter. The message is also a feel good message, follow your dreams and shit even if the world is not ready to appreciate it yet because if you're persistent enough eventually they will.
