As a retired ff I can say it's the biggest con job going. They tell the public how hard they work when in fact they get paid to sleep at night sometimes never even getting up all night. Another fact only 3to5% of their calls are even fires most call are minor bullshit calls like alarm activations or chasing along with an Ambulance. Yep Firefighters have the public so fooled it's very sad.

Thanks for your video. As someone who is struggling feeling fulfilled in my career and feeling like I’m not making a big impact, I was considering firefighting after talking to many people in fire service. I do have a family/kids. Could the struggles you encountered be different from department to department or is it becoming a larger issue across the board?

No, you don't need more "upgrades"🤦🏾‍♂️, just better lines choices and spotters. Most importantly though, the driver skill. I've seen 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas make it out with little to no problem, there are videos out there. Some without much of a spotter and definitely not as hooked up as your truck, gear wise.

Hello Max! I was wondering if you know how it works when you have a baby kestrel( felt from the nest, no way to put it back), and you want to start the falconry journey with this lil' bird. Is that ok? I m really studios, learning each day, really want to do it 100% for the love for these birds. Baby bird is doing really good, just growing her juvenil wings... please, if you can, give me some advice! Thank you& all the best for you and yours!!

Yeah, I hear ya. When I was a young man, my thing was the ambulance. I studied to be a photojournalist, intending to cover the Vietnam War and the anti-war strife on our Los Angeles streets and universities. I got my EMT cert, hoping it might come in handy if I arrived before the FD and someone needed pre-arrival help, and also so I might help myself if I got injured while covering a story. But it was the ambulance that just sucked me right in, and I loved waddling down the road on emergency calls in those big, fat, lovely beasts. Even the last of the Cadillacs were a joy to work in as BLS crew. But the endless calls for outright pitiful tragedies, piss poor upper managenent who thought of us as expendable licensed meat for the grinder, along with back-to-back 24 hour shifts, began to take a toll. Physically, even though I stood at five-feet-nuthin' in height, it didn't bother me, I was strong and aerobically fit then. It was total lack of sleep, super stress, physical danger from bar fights, domestic disputes turned violent, being fully exposed to crazy drivers while working heavy rescue TCs on the freeway system, and seeing my fellow EMTs being hurt badly in ambulance crashes along with unrelenting nightmares, wore me down. So, into the fire service I went. In 1977, 90 people applied for a single position at our urban fire department and I came out #1 on the list. Each suppression battalion consisted of 6 stations with the usual engines, medics, ambulances, ladder trucks and an airport firefighting combined unit, was a challenge to dispatch alone in a bunker under Headquarters. Our affectionate nickname was, "The Mole in the Hole." Each shift went 24 hours with one dispatcher. Man, I loved those guys. Kinda like working in a hen house with all the bitching and moaning, but in a pinch, they were great guys who operated from top to bottom as a very spit and polish professional team. Best of all, the department respected the dispatcher as we were a uniformed part of the suppression battalion, our decisions carried weight with the chiefs. But, even that job takes its toll. Talking to grief stricken people, the drowned babies and toddlers in swimming pools where you coached mama through infant CPR, the woman who died in a structure fire where, thank God in His mercy, the phones remained quiet so I could comfort her on the line as she slowly passed from anoxia, too weak to help herself. It took a long time of self work to finally heal from all that. One day, I just turned in my badge after 11 years of it, after taking a lateral transfer to become a lead fire dispatcher in northern Orange County and moved to northwest Washington State before hitting the academy and trained to be a firefighter/EMT for our local fire district. And I worked one last time for a private ambulance service before finally hanging up my helmet at age 54. I am just glad you got out of it when you needed to. I always say it's the most wonderful job you will ever learn to hate.

Great vlog....I think Toyotas intention for mounting it in the bed was for powering hand tools while on a job sight, not so much charging phones or camera batteries. Can the Guild be wired together with the box mounted inverter so that I can still run a saw or drill from the box and charge batteries in the cab?

I feel your pain. I'm a volunteer, but we're caught up in the politics of the Career guys as well. Cap that with a Deputy Chief who doesn't think volunteers merit their time or effort. My Captain at my station just resigned, so now we have no leadership and can't run calls because none of the guys/gals have the 9 hours of documented supervised driving time + 4 Code 1 Responses and 4 Code 3 Responses. I have a Career Lt. that is my entire chain of command and can't get him to return my calls to figure out what the hell is going on with us, so, yeah, I get it.

Oh man…I worked for a department that sounds much like your experience. Yes, the people you work with can ruin the experience….I was stuck with a toxic, disgruntled piece of crap. I was lucky and had the ability to retire. Its really too bad because the job can be the best in the world. Don’t give up…you will find the right crew again if you want it.

Even better advice: Don't do crazy shit to get stuck in the first place. Especially if you're on your own. I travel from IL to AZ most winters to rockhound and hike thru the Sonoran Desert solo and am very cautious while trekking thru the desert environment. If I encounter a situation that gives me pause, I don't risk it. I'll unload the dirt bike and proceed with it if there's something worthwhile checking out up ahead. I need my truck to stay in 1 piece to get me back to IL. Still enjoy your vids, tho.

you trap like shit. the first thing you always do is throw a towel over it, then hood it asap. then use weak masking tape to tape up the feet and a nylon stocking for the body with more tape. of course its a red tail, so not really a huge deal. lastly, if the gerbil is fine, youre building the trap too big.
