I absolutely love those 8R’s! Excellent rebuild on it. Unless it’s a trade secret of yours, how do you determine when the flame spreader needs adjusted? Is the adjustment done with the flame spreader on or off the burner bell? I’m assuming during the rebuild that any buildup under the flame spreader is removed. Anyway, it’s like Christmas in July with you loading up some new videos lol!! Thank you for the video. I believe I could watch rebuild videos all day.
@BernieDawgCinema14 күн бұрын
@bigferd4534 Thanks! That’d be a good topic for a video! No secret. Short answer: on an otherwise well-cared-for stove, yellow flame equals rich mix. Airy blue flame equals lean mix. Raise the plate to lean the rich mix. Lower the plate to richen the lean mix. I usually work on the plate when off the bell. Goal? A deep blue flame with no yellow tips or highlights. BD

Picked up one of these for 5 bucks at the thrift store, super happy with it. Question, how long will it burn on a full tank ?
@BernieDawgCinema14 күн бұрын
@xio6778 That would depend on many factors - mostly you and your methods. I try to power down after twenty minutes maximum so I don't run it dry and scorch the wick. That should be *plenty* of time to boil water, melt small amounts of snow, or cook a trail meal. Any stove that's been out of service for a while should have its fuel cap gasket and SRV pip replaced. I have plenty of videos that show you how. BD

Hey Bernie Dawg: Wonderfully instructive video! I'm kind of a newbie with gas pressure stoves, so your channel is a major help. A few questions if I may: 1. What type of media do you use to get the finish so nice on the burner? 2. Did you use some kind of solvent to clean the interior of the burner of all that gunk and what causes that much accumulation? I really appreciate your work and videos, so thank you for going to all the effort. P.S. I almost forgot to ask: I'm in need of a burner (preferably silent) for an Optimus No. 100 lipstick stove. By chance do you have any for sale? P.S.S. Should I ask these questions in another forum?
@BernieDawgCinema17 күн бұрын
@swami15 Technical questions are almost always better answered though email to [email protected]. That said, you can find info in the description boxes of most of my videos and I'll give your questions a quick shot right now. #1 - I used glass bead blasting for this burner in the video. www.milessupply.com/product/ballotini-glass-bead-abrasive/ #2 - no solvents, just heat from a torch. Never red. Heat ignites the carbon deposits and turns sludge to ash. Sludge develops from kerosene fuels cooking into sludge in the cooler parts of the burner tubes. Sludge is caused by extended or exclusive use of the burner at low simmers and low pressures, especially with bad fuels. P.S. - None for sale. Go to my stove supply webpage and click on the link to Base-Camp in the UK for the best source of stove parts/burners for vintage Swedish stoves: www.berniedawg.com/stove-part-supplier-links/ P.P.S. - Probably. [email protected] Emailing gets you better responses that can include photos. KZfaq comments isn't set up for questions of any depth. 👍😎 BD

Best I have seen so far. Bad part is that I cannot get to purchase one of these stove. Where are they?
@BernieDawgCinema17 күн бұрын
@user-hq4sb6yu4i Seriously? 🫢 Okay. I’ll bite. For instructional purposes on how to find stoves… Here’s how I would go about finding one from watching this video and from reading all the information in the description box below the video. First, I’d take the title of the video, "Heinze Geniol German Army Cooker Stove”, and plug that into my handy Google search box. Hit the return key and… voila! Up comes a whole list of hits including the link to a seller on German eBay who sells them. It’s a German surplus military stove after all. Makes sense that it’d be good to search for them on German eBay. They sure aren’t cheap though. Whoa! So! I go to German eBay and search on “Heinze Geniol Kocher” (kocher is German for cooker, or stove). Voila! (again) There are four or five listings there for these stoves. Again, not cheap, especially with overseas shipping. But... They are Army surplus. They come from the German Army. You won’t find them in other countries or on Chinese auction sites. And, they are not purchase-able as a new product because they are old military vintage stoves. Makes sense now? Good. Learning and thinking skills are important in this crazy world of ours. Here’s wishing you a positive outcome and a happy life with your new searching skills. You’re welcome! 👍😎🙏 BD

@BernieDawgCinemaАй бұрын
While it is less common to find over-pressure release devices or fuel caps on kerosene-only stoves, some SRV fuel caps were used in later years on these. Mainly because of use with multi-fuel applications or simply because it costs more to make two kinds of fuel caps. Really depends on the brand, model and type of stove you have. BD

@BernieDawgCinemaАй бұрын
@MARKIEBANUNCE Looked at some of your videos. You have a Svea 123 (no R) stove. So... you can use a high E string off your guitar to clean the jet since there is no built-in cleaning needle. You can make a handle for the short section of guitar string by using a slip of aluminum from a beer can. Crimp the string in one end and you are good to go as long as you don't do it while the stove is burning. Roofing sheet metal can be used for the same handle if you want one for use with the flame going. BD

I’ve watched a few videos of this in action on the xgk ex stove. I’m a tad concerned that the pot supports will get softened from the heat that’s being directed at them. Any comments on this, or is it absolutely a non issue?
@BernieDawgCinemaАй бұрын
The idea is to line up the gaps in the cap hole pattern with the pot legs. They'll get less flame and less heat on them that way. They'll stay cooler. Not every purchaser gets this figured out though it seems kinda obvious to me. The stainless legs should easily handle the heat either way. I think you called it right - it's a non-issue. But, if it's a stressor for you, you don't have to buy a cap... just get some earplugs. They're much cheaper. 🙂👍 BD

Do you recommend the dragon tamer or the midicap for xgk ii shakerjet? On your website it says midicap but here you use the dragontamer.
@BernieDawgCinemaАй бұрын
@jorgenbroto8734 Yeah. I’m using the DT on this stove using kerosene in the video. And, usually, folks just write me at my email address ([email protected]) where I can find out their preferences and provide guidance. Since that’s not the way you’ve decided to go… Both caps will work fine. If you like the legs for stability (you are a clumsy, rough-handling person) get the DT with its legs. If you wanna save a few bucks, get the Midicap (MD). If you are a mostly kerosene user, the DT. If you prefer white gas (aka Coleman, aka naphtha) go for the MD. If you also have a Dragonfly, get the DT and use on both. Likewise, if you have US Military stoves or an Optimus/Primus 96, go for the MD. If you are just looking to find errors or inconsistencies in my statements or postings, then none of the above applies to you. Happy camping! BD

@BernieDawgCinema2 ай бұрын
You take a look at the burner you have on your stove and compare yours to the burners on the stoves in this video. Silent burners look completely different than roarer burners. The Svea 5 should have come fitted with a silent burner from the factory, but only you can tell if it has the original burner or if it was refitted with a roarer at a later time. OR… send me a photo of your burner and I can tell you what you have. [email protected] .

I know this a old video, anyway. What causes it to surge in first place?
@BernieDawgCinema2 ай бұрын
Surging is caused by vapor detonation (the rapid production of fuel vapor) in an unrestricted fuel path. What’s that mean? Liquid fuel flashes to vapor explosively. Occurs when the fuel path gets hot enough and/or when the fuel path is long or over-large. Provides a space for fuel to expand overmuch and too quickly and the expansion causes the surge. Mesh can help arrest surging. BD
@briancampbell63722 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I just bought one of these and I'm waiting for it to be shipped, so I find this interesting. So surging is just something that the manufacturer accepted? Did you already correct the left burner in your video or was it working correctly?
@BernieDawgCinema2 ай бұрын
@briancampbell6372 No. The original manufacturers had several means of arresting surging - one of which involving wire mesh as I show. But, old stoves get monkeyed with by many people who own them subsequent to the original purchaser. No telling what the interim owners have done. If your new-to-you stove doesn't exhibit surging when you use it, then don't worry about it. Enjoy! If it DOES show surging, now you know one way to fix it. If you need further help, then just email my help line at [email protected] . That's the place to these sorts of technical discussions. Thanks! BD

@ahah1785 Doing it by hand or wire brushing is definitely no fun. Sandblasting can set you back $1-1.4k for even a basic rig that's worth monkeying with. @user-jj5pm5xq5y I've not run the Coleman 344s with white gas/naphtha/Coleman fuel - only kerosene as intended by the manufacturer. I usually just grab one of my 500's if I want to use Coleman fuel. @scottperry30 Use naphtha, aka Coleman camp stove fuel, aka Crown camping appliance fuel, aka MSR Superfuel, aka Aspen 4T, etc. DON'T use unleaded petrol like goes in cars as auto fuel has become so full of unburnable additives (at stove operating temperatures) you'll just make a mess of your vintage military stove and probably wreck it with fouling in the inaccessible burner head. Fixed a bunch that were wrecked in this way. There's no such thing as a free lunch. It'll cost you a lot more to run one of these stoves than to just use a modern propane stove, so, if cheap is what you are after, this ain't it. BD
