How accurate is DEXED, compared to a real DX7?
@synthfellow
@synthfellow 27 күн бұрын
Some would say it’s not so accurate. I say it’s the closest you can get to a real DX7 and considering it’s free makes it a no brainer when it comes to DX7 Vst. I haven’t tried OP7 but almost every other vst and they all are good in their own ways but I prefer Dexed.

To me the SY sounds way too bright. The TX has a moody lofi character that makes it way more present and vibrant. Thanks for the comparison :)

The primary usage was to run it together with the DX7 to make the sound fatter with detune, or use the midi overflow for 32 note polyphony. t's a "Poor man's" DX1 or 1/4'th TX816

@@synthfellow Ya, I had the TX802. With all the Retro hype of FM i kinda regret Selling it, same as my Korg DW8000, I got an M1 and was’t happy with the DWGS sounds, so I exchaned the old DW with an EX and used it together with the TX, it was pre clonewheels. So the TX with multiple outputs was used for the obvious hit sounds and pure organ sounds running thru an old Dynachord CLS-22. Was a pretty decent analog Leslie sim for that time. I was propably one of the few that bothered learning myself how to program those FM sounds. Why I want to hurt those that designed the new Genos 2 and did only give us a preset DX7 engine. How hard could it be to make it accept sysex… I can use all my old sounds from the TX802 in my Kronos and add all the effects you didn’t have back in the days. But its kinda just nostalgia. I really wouldn’t bother paying what it cost to re-purchase all the gear I sold of to pay for newer gear. Its more a regret how little we often sold it for and now much of it is more expensive used than when it was new and interesting.

@@mrdali67 yeah a big part of me keep asking why I keep getting those old synths when it can be done all in the box. I got it all in the computer, more easy access and not prone to breaking or needing a battery change. But then again.. it’s nice to have the real thing.

Hi Brilliant video thanks. Ive just purchased a D50 with a flat internal battery for a bargain price, so I'll definitely be trying this. I have two questions - is the internal Eprom memory in the D50 big enough to hold all the .syx files from the cards?, or do you have to load a card 'as and when' you want to use a particular card, I'm guessing not - as is the memory overwritten each time you load a new card? Also, can you recommend/link a USB to MIDI interface cable that works with the D50 & this software (I know alot of the cheap ones dont work) Thank you in advance

Back in the 80s I had a friend who had a TX7 that he ran with his guitar and midi. I had a DX21 at the time and really enjoyed the TX7 and really wanted one...but certainly could not afford one...but I did find quite a bargain on an FB-01 which I still have...I also now have a DX7IIFD which I purchased in the 90s. Used, of course, but still works great never thought of using the FB-01 as an expansion though...that detune is amazing!

Nice video! I had no idea that the data slider is outputting data via midi. Please please let it be CC. 😁 (I’ve had my DX7 as my master keyboard in the studio for about 25 years now and to be able to use that slider in the daw (Bitwig) would be really nice.) By the way, does “expander” really means that it’s an addition? My Crumar Bit 01 has “Rack expander” on the front, and it’s just the rack version of the Bit 99.

Nice thing about the TX7 it responds as well as a DX7 to SysEx, and it’s not complicated (at least not for an FM synth). It’s pretty easy to make an editor for it. I did it with an Electra One, and you can fit that Electra One on top of a TX7 as well. They make a nice pair. Because the sysex works bidirectional, the Electra One shows you how the TX7 sound is constructed. A very good way to learn how to make sounds in FM. May I’ll need a second TX7 !

Now imagine what the TX816 (8 DX7like modules in a rack) would sound like. 😉Yamaha came up with sounds that spread over all of the modules, with each only producing a certain part of the combined sound. Much better than just layering the same sound. The famous FMepiano sounds massive on that one. Just a little bit of varied panorama and a bit of detuning and no chorus is needed. Just reverb maybe. Another synth that will never leave my studio.

TX7 has 32 memories for its Function parameters, plus another 32 which can be used for DX7 (which has only one such setting for all 32 patches). Both MIDI cables have to be connected to use this as TX7 sends SysEx data to DX7. Another great feature is range setting when TX7 plays only in limited range - up, down on the keyboard, or when the lowest point is set higher than the highest, there's a silenced range between them. Also possibility of program TX7 directly from DX7 should be mentioned.

I mean the TX7 is called an FM *expander* right?! But to be fair if you can't afford a DX or find one is good condition, the TX is very competent as a stand-alone synth too, especially given its age! I don't own either and likely never will, but do have a TX81z, as well as a Digitone and Opsix. Plus there is the Arturia DX7 plugin which is great and I'm just now experimenting with Tracktion F'em. Many paths to FM these days, it's really having a revival!
