What an old gem! I love the sound of the cam rotors. It's too bad that no manufacturer continued with this design, it was much simpler and long lasting than the throwaway gear drive heads of today.

Really great video, Dave! Those Jr’s evolved ultimately into the 1330’s once Buckner moved to that case style and model number series. It’s amazing how well yours works right out of the bucket. I could listen to those cams click all day! Thanks for sharing!

Bill, thank you for the comments! I was very lucky at the time to have found this Buckner when I did and rediscovered it again years later resting outside in a bucket with years of elements on top of it! I greatly appreciate your help in identifying this Buckner! Not to mention the photo of the Buckner number 12 catalog page. That helped a great deal in identifying its history. Yes, that cam producing that kind of sound is one of a kind and soothing to listen too! Thanks for watching!…

Nice Buckner rotor! It runs well on your setup! And it has some impressive range! I wonder if i got a 3rd pump on my setup to run in series if i would gain much pressure to offset the cost (4-500$ for a pump and about 100ish for a new 25 foot suction hose. Id probably be sitting at around 65psi if i had to guess. Going from 40 to 53 on my smaller guns is a difference i can see. Thank you for sharing and i hope to get a cam rotor of my own someday!

Thank you for you comments. This particular Buckner according to the data on the chart, can run 30-70 lbs of pressure, ( I have static about 110-115 lbs.) 3/16 nozzle at 7.0 to 18.0 GPM’s and 70-95 diameter coverage. The operating of your guns to me would be on another level of calculations to find the right volumes and working pressures for the particular gun. I’m sure that different pumps put out different amounts of water. I always enjoy watching your big guns in operation. They are very impressive! I’m sure that one day you will find your own cam rotor. Keep an eye out!! Thanks for watching…

Very Nice find, it works well with your pressure too! That is part of the original series of pop up Came rotors and it did become the 1282. The Buckner Cam design was truly an innovative simple approach to long range turf irrigation, more reliable with only 2 moving parts and around long before pop up impact heads; a solid reliable design that lasted over 70 years with only minor refinements.... Too bad Buckner fell into the wrong hands, or this type of drive may still exist to compete against the complex moving parts of the gear drives Thanks for sharing

Kerry, Thanks for the comments. My static pressure is running about 110/115 lbs. Thanks for clarifying that this 12JR cam rotor was before the 1282. We had thought that this could have been a possibility but could not be certain. I feel very lucky to have stumbled upon this and the 1294’s. They were in the scrap yard getting ready to go thru the shredder. I was lucky to be at the right place and time.! The Buckner Cam Rotors were indeed a very reliable work horse for many years. It is a shame that they are no longer produced. I really enjoyed installing them and servicing them back in my working days. Again, thanks for your comments And for watching!!!…

Thank you for your comments. Pressure being that low is very often a problem with irrigation systems. The place I used to work for had several sites with low water pressure. We were always servicing the irrigation pumps to keep the systems working properly. When I installed my irrigation system water main around my property a number of years ago, I had the pressure and volume in mind to be delivered with minimal pressure drop. Indeed I am very fortunate to have the city water pressure that I have. Thanks for watching…

Dave, what a great idea you had to show the way water moves through the sprinkler without the internal! I think that’s really interesting to see. In all of these, all of the parts play a role. As for the production dates you asked about. I believe it was introduced in the 1930’s with the original line. Back then they also had equivalents to the 1330 and 1360 of later years. The latest catalog I have these in is 1966. In the 1960’s they brought on the 1300 line, and in my JM catalog from the 1970’s, all cams are 1300 series. Thanks for taking the time to get these things moving again. That must have been some rough water going through galvanized pipe, or something, to clog them so badly.

Bill, thanks for the great comments!. Wow!! This could go all the way back to the 30’s! That is amazing!! I have a 1972 repair parts catalog that still show parts available for them at that time. I might have missed something elsewhere in other catalogs. Time will tell.. I don’t know if there were jammed up when I got them from the scrap yard or from being in my storage area here. I had recently rediscovered them in my outside storage area at the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket full of water from the recent rains. Also being covered with other Hunter plastic rotors, leaves, etc. I had forgot that I even had these from the scrap yard. I was very pleasantly surprised after cleaning them up and going back together that they actually work! What a great testament to Buckner and there engineering at the time… Thanks for all the info and for watching!

This brings back a memory, when I was a young teen, my teacher hired me to help with the lawn care of the football field, you see we mowed it and we had to water it to keep it as green as possible. For the irrigation part, we had to drag long pipes from goal post to goal post and hook them together, for the sprinklers we used Rainbirds MaxiPaw sprinklers 4 to a pipe section. For the water we used a small nearby stream and a pump to water. It was literally a labor of love for me, as I LOVE impact sprinklers there cool and the sound they make is awsome

The Rain-O-Mats are awesome heads! The spray heads were a high quality brass spray head. They had many patterns, angles and arcs available, and special order arc was never an issue. Very customer driven…. Too bad they didn’t survive the times…… they built a quality brass product and resisted the plastic transition; all those that stayed the course didn’t survive the rest of time, sadly. I had put in hundreds of the 300 HP sprays in the early mid 80’s a long with #7 rotors. Thanks for sharing. I have some I my system in my yard still going strong.

Kerry, Thanks for the comments. The Rain-O-Mats were indeed a nice rugged brass spray heads and I do believe they were a short lived company. Pretty much like all the other brass products companies, they did hang in there as long as possible to not fall to the plastic world. I really enjoyed working with the #7 rotors! They were very unique. I’m hopeful that there still might be a few stray Rain-O-Mat holdouts still in service out there. Who knows. I’m glad to hear that you have some still working at your place! That’s awesome!! Thanks for watching…

Nice rotor! the golf course my parents live off of has stream rotors and rainbird 51s. I'm wondering if they are the VIH models (electric maybe?). Since I think they use a computer system to control which heads run at a certain time. I think it'd be easier to use than a valve that runs a bunch of heads like at a residential setup. I think its easier because they can just select what heads to run instead of just turning on a valve to run a zone. Thats got some good range. I have been thinking of getting a Rainbird eagle 950 series, i think the golf course there uses them too.
@oldschoolsprinklers9000
@oldschoolsprinklers9000 21 күн бұрын
@@NelsonBigGunP200Fan Thank you for the comments. I think in today’s world, that pretty much everything is in electric. The toro head you had seen in the video is from 1982. At the time there still some hydraulic systems out there. So I would say (without seeing it) at your golf course location that it’s a safe bet that it’s possibly a computer electronics system with the VIH models. Good luck in getting your Rainbird eagle 950. Thanks for watching…

This makes me nostalgic. I fought the 630/650/690 gear drives and their control systems with everything I had. They were dominant in golf in the 1980’s in large portions of the country. What you have is an incredible find. You do a great job explaining in simple terms how this could be a valve-in-head or just a check valve block style sprinkler. It runs great, and you capture it really well, which isn’t easy on a long-throw sprinkler. Great subject, and a great video.

Bill, thank you for your comments! We did not have a lot of Toro turf products where I used to work. Toro was introducing the 640 series back in the 70’/80’s and they were in their infancy. The ones we did get did not hold up well at all under the constant pounding they were getting under our heavy athletic fields usage and quickly found them to be a maintenance headache. So we put back the Buckner, Thompson turf sprinklers that could take the pounding and be so much more vandal resistant. Thanks for watching!…

I built a portable sprinkler stand manifold from galvanized pipe and fittings with various size risers including 1”, 3/4” and 1/2” to accommodate whatever size I need for the particular sprinkler that I am featuring. Each riser has an independent valve on it to control them on or off independently. The entire manifold is supplied with a 3/4” hose to pipe connection.

It is surprising of how good of a spray it gives. This 120 does not have a flow adjustment screw. I will have to look for a 122 and note the comparison. I could see it being a clogging issue. A warm greeting from Germany. Videos showing how to do it are great. In Germany, there was a company called Hydor (around 1925) that manufactured a sprinkler consisting of a pipe with nozzles that was moved by a hydraulic piston. This company was bought by Heinrich Perrot and later marketed this device as PERROT HYDOR Landregenapparat. For me, it's always exciting: who was inspired by whom? Did Hydor copy this Skinner sprinkler, or vice versa? I can supply pictures and brochures. Bill has the e-mail address.

Thank you for the warm greetings from Germany! Here is warm greetings right back to you from the west coast of the USA, the Los Angeles area in particular. You also have a wonderful history of irrigation which I find very interesting indeed…. I do not know who was first with this kind of system or who copied who. Of all the information that I could find on Charles Skinner was he had developed this type of system in the late 1890’s. His primary purpose was to find an easier way to irrigate his farm that he had. Yes I would be very interested in the pictures and brochures and will contact Bill. Classic lawn spray. You got the pressure right as there is minimal misting. I like how you can see the water’s actually being spun out of the sprinkler in a tight cone. Good sized water droplets. If I had a ton of money to put into a system, I’d be tempted to do the lawn area in these just for how they look. Systems with these in them should be a part of every movie set between 1920 and 1980.
