What do you do when you run across a roof with ice & water shield between the shingles and the plywood. (With no felt/paper or synthetic underlayment beyween the I&W and the shingles. Those shingles will be grown to the I&W and the I&W will be grown to the plywood. I've got some shingles I need to remove and replace on our roof and there is no getting them up.

So glad this was still available to view. Apparently I hired an amateur roofing company. 😮I was told it is a new company that the county, that I live in, has been using to re-roof the houses the county owns & uses to house legal immigrants. The guy told me he has 4 reliable guys as part of his crew & one owns the dumpster. I met all the guys when they stopped by to give an estimate for someone who owns a house but is also low income (currently). They said where they would park the dumpster, that they would remove all the old shingles, put up new shingles & it would be done in two days. Maybe even 1.5 days. I agreed. I did have to put it off because the insurance company was being arses as usual... But once I had the funds - their quote still standed and I told the county guy to let me know when they can start. Well he the guy who is in charge of his little roofing company, he was remeasuring the grade. It's a Cape Cod style with two dormers in the front where they would park it, it's got a pretty good grade on it for steepness - not the steepest I've seen . Said 2 day job tops. 50%but it's still pretty high. They would definitely require grappling cords like mountain hikers/climbers use. So when I got the phone call I had just gotten to the store for my folks - I left to meet the roofer. The county guy across the street said the guys were there removing my roof. I thought it meant the whole crew was at my house with a dumpster part in my driveway part in the yard... But that's not what I saw. I saw a Jeep in my driveway, parked crooked, backed up partially under my carport. I saw the county guy standing in my driveway with one of his nephews. Then I saw the guy that gave me the quote. I didn't see a dumpster or anyone pulling shingles off my roof. I'm not even sure why the county guy said what he said, unless he thought the rest of the crew was going to be there shortly. He has to deal with them when it comes to the homes the county owns - so I think he would know how the crew works or doesn't. The guy in charge says per the agreement, 50% quoted - so I can go order the materials me & my guys will need to replace the old shingles. Which I understood that, I used to do website contract work & that's what I did. Always got 50% up front, just in case there were issues with the current website that the owner doesn't realize there may be or they don't have a website yet & they need to register the website or they need more space for it, etc., etc. Most contractors ask or want 50% upfront. I give him cash, because that's what's keeping the rate low. He goes off & buys it from the ABC Supply Company - I know right where it's located - my dad often bought his roofing there when he was younger & did his own roofing. Some shingles show up the next day, the ABC Supply delivery person apologizes for the shingles not being in wrappers, apparently the color I chose (though he said the contractor chose) wasn't in stock except for the few that weren't in wrappers -.. Then he says - but don't worry mam, the rest are on their way from another nearby location (Kentucky) and should be delivered later today or tomorrow. The roofer himself didn't show up until after 9 am - though he said he'd be starting at 7 am.. The county guy across the street - his nephew didn't show up until 9:30 am - but wasn't dressed for hard labor (he was wearing loafers & shorts! 😂) by the time he returned the other roofer had already started removing the old shingles - which were falling onto plastic. I asked where the dumpster was & that's when I found out that the guy who owns it has tested positive for Covid... & then he said the other two guys where giving estimates to other home owners that the county guy across the street setup for him, but he wanted to get my house started right away... Oh OK sounds good... Yeah sure did sound good! 😕 I finish my errands arrive back at my house shingle & nail debris everywhere in the grass, on my driveway... On tables in my backyard 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🙎🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️uhm wth... The front part of my roof has old tar paper exposed & original wood roof exposed. The back side has one more layer of old roofing still. More shingles have been dropped off, and they're not in bags either.. (did the color I chose end up being an "end of the line color?? 🤔) Day 3 - back of roof still had the same old layer on it that still required removing... The front side has one row of the newer plastic/paper that is used with roofing because it does a better job at protecting the original wood roof from the elements of nature as well as insects.. But it's not properly tacked down - & whoever placed it in place left the entire roll on the roof when they left - and it rolled off the side & unraveled.... Old roofing materials are still in my yard on top of my recycling containers... In my driveway - nails... Uh, wouldn't they sweep it at least to be in the same place? Now it's day 4...NO ROOFERS! I'm home all day today because my mom is sending my other sister to pickup our dad at the hospital. His surgery was a success - he even now has low blood pressure now instead of high blood pressure. Which is kind of a win. Unless of course he needs to start taking meds to raise it! 😉 More shingles have arrived again (not in bags again... Must be a color they're not going to carry anymore - I hope the roofer got a good deal on it! 😅) But my yard is still a mess... Am I going to have to wait until the guy with the dumpster no longer has Covid? He could be out for another week? How am I supposed to cut my lawn without knowing where all the nails are at? Do I need to go buy a metal detector & have a stick with a strong magnet at the end? What about all the debris?? I can't be watching the roofers & making sure they're doing it right... I know I'm definitely not going to give them more money - they haven't asked - but just looking how it is now, I kind of think they might. Do I have a signed contract - no, you know trust your neighbors especially when they work for the county... But when the guy from the county returns home (his nephew says he is out at the store) I have a few questions for him... As he said they're a new company, trying to get more homes under their belt. They've replaced 4 roofs for some of the homes owned by the county.. They're a good bunch of guys... 🤨🙄 I hope he wasn't lying 🤥... And maybe it's just due to the gut in charge wanting to progress as soon as possible, while the rest of the crew, maybe they all have Covid too. I know how that Covid bug is - it has the same symptoms of so many other colds & allergies!! So it would be very easy for a guy to think it's just a small cold or an allergy... Or just take something to temporarily relieve the symptoms all the while being contagious & unknowingly giving it to everyone else. 😂😅 One of my sisters did that last year - she even went to her doctor - & he was like - it's not Covid! I just tested 15 patients in the last 4 days & not one tested positive for Covid. It's just the common cold... But when we all had different symptoms some worse than others & one of our parents feeling so bad he went to the ER - & was diagnosed as positive for Covid last year - we all got tested - and the one who was originally diagnosed with the common cold - had it too - but was told the test result was faint - which the nurse said it meant she was near the end of the virus... 😮I bet her doctor will think again about not testing - even if 15 patients before the one are all negative 😂... I'm like 🤔 🧐 😒🤦🏼‍♀️🙎🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🙎🏼‍♀️🙇🏼‍♀️🤪
