Quantez is one of my favorite Western movies but I haven't seen it in over 30 years when it was on the AMC Channel. KZfaq doesn't even have any video clips from the movie. Does anybody know a platform where a person can watch or rent Quantez.

Do you recommend these sets? I’m looking to bolster my noir collection

Thanks for your question and for checking out my channel. I'd say that if you're new to noir, you'll probably want to start somewhere else. Some of the better non--Kino box sets are now out of print, such as the Film Noir Classic Collections (5 volumes, DVD only) from Warner. You can still find them, but they may be pricey. The problem is that many of those titles have been released individually on Blu-ray. Indicator has several box sets (Region B) that are out of print, but you can find the individual titles on their website. www.powerhousefilms.co.uk/collections/film-noir?page=1 The Kino sets are a mixed bag. The first one is the only set that includes 5 films; the rest only contain 3 each. The first set is worth having. It includes two classics, HE RAN ALL THE WAY and BIG HOUSE U.S.A. As for the others, WITNESS TO MURDER is good, but largely an imitation of the classic REAR WINDOW. STORM FEAR is not bad, but A BULLET FOR JOEY is weak. The Kino sets are mostly for people who have seen all the premiere film noir titles and want to see what else is out there. Some of them are barely noir at all. My advice is to read some reviews and maybe pick up some of these sets during one of Kino's sales. I hope this helps!

"The master himself Eddie Muller" ? WTF is he the master of? Seriously what are you referring to when you say he's the master...apart from his own ego? From what I've seen he's a self satisfied little twerp and his his writing is f***ing embarrassing. Apart from that great selection of books and a couple I've not read so thanks for recommending them.

The Garment Jungle was a strong, taut film about unions in the savage NYC garment district, with the gorgeous Gia Scala as the female lead. --Drive a Crooked Road's a well done caper film, of sorts, with a credible Mickey Rooney as the putative chump.

Could Kino's conceit be that decades-old melodramas rate being legitimate "noir" genre?

I think they have a very loose interpretation of film noir. Plus they are no doubt sandwiching in films that would be of little interest as individual releases. On a related note, Kino Lorber Studio Classics recently asked on Twitter: "Should we package previously released Film Noir titles to release additional volumes of our popular FILM NOIR: THE DARK SIDE OF CINEMA boxed sets." The overwhelming response was yes. These would be already-released titles and not mixing old with new. Something to keep an eye on. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for the question. All of these sets are something of a mixed bag. If I had to pick one, I prefer Columbia Noir #2. Murder By Contract is probably the best one in that set, but they're all solid. From Columbia Noir #1, The Lineup is fantastic, and most of the rest are solid, but the weakest film in the set is Escape in the Fog. Keep an eye out for the out-of-print sets on the used market, but Indicator sometimes re-releases box sets. They also (eventually) make those box set films available as individual releases. Hope this helps!

The Show called Mannix had the best camera people for the best pictures on tv. Mannix complete comes in 2 differens dvd size packs. I bought the pack that had the most dvds to get the best picture quality of any tv show that was made. The wizard of Oz remastered is great. I heard that THe Yellow Submarine was remastered analog by hand & the sound is great. . The Blu-ray of Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds at Radio City has great sound. Did you know that tv & movies used a better quality viewing clearer film in the late fifties & early sixties that stays the same quality always, but the brand new tv shows look worn out & grainy the second time they play them. Movies or tv look much better when filmed in the bright snow, desert, & ocean. Look at Stallone in Cliffhanger snow, or Gilligans Island. The greatest widescreen movie I ever saw was Man of the West 1958. I wanted so bad to get Predator on dvd. I remember vividly how great the monster became visible. But bith the dvd & remastered dvd looked terrible. They stored the movie in a damp place. I want to get the clear Head Above Water on dvd, the American movie, because of its brightness. I want to get the clear dvd of My name is nobody, that the picture aint stretched. The best tv is a 50 inch LG tv. Blu-ray dvd players upsample dvds much better than dvd players. @@journeysindarknessandlight5775 I appreciate all the long time it must take to watch these long movies to do these videos. Please give a video on books made into movies & documentaries based on movies. And all the great movies based on just one specific person like Randolph Scott. I think that usually only the best fiction books get made into movies. The I Am Legend book Each movies stories are different from each other & the book, but they are all great, except the last William Smith movie. The first movie was called The Last Man on Earth, a really great movie with Vincent Price, some of them were colorized. The sequal to that was The Omega man. Great movies. I think the Omega Man was an unintentional rascist movie. I bet you never knew this. All the movies from 1969 to 1973 are rare to find & never done any good in the theaters, because the Viet Nam war ended & all the veterans spent their whole time at home making babies. The movie theaters were deader than a doorknob back then, Once Upon a Time in the West done no good in the US, but did great in other parts of the world. People not going to the movies could not be blamed on the economy, the economy was doing great. Then drive ins failed, lights were a bid expense. A few years back a brand new built AMC theater in my town for the first time one year made more than dvd sales that year. I thought that was weird when right beside the theater my mall was deader than a doorknob. I used to get a Movies Unlimited catalog, now they dont seem to offer much & at high prices. Great picks! My gateway into reading about noir began with the first two "Noir Reader" volumes by Silver and Ursini, then their encyclopedia, which continues to be the best resource imho. I think I've read too many but there are so many to choose from, really want to check out that Imogen Sara Smith book, love her Criterion pieces. I would highly recommend James Naremore's "More than Night: Film Noir in Its Contexts" if you want to go a little deeper. And Barry Gifford's two collections of essays on noir and more, "Out of the Past: Adventures in Film Noir" and "The Devil Thumbs a Ride and Other Unforgettable Movies" both are fun and pulpy and full of gems - Gifford wrote the screenplay for Lynch's Lost Highway and was the founding editor of Black Lizard, so you know you're in good hands. Only found your channel a few weeks ago, great stuff, keep up the good work!

Judging by your choices, which are great, I implore you to pick up a copy of Black Wings Has My Angel by Elliott Chaze, it’s up there with Thompson and Goodis - I realize that’s a bold claim but yes that good! An excellent film review (here and on your website). I love Quantez (In portuguese 'A última etapa - The last step') and I think it is a nice mix of western and noir, a kind of experiment in combining the two genres. Quantez begins as a classic western with its epic yet melancholy orchestral soundtrack and suddenly becomes just a noir with western characters with tense dialogues and almost all the recording in a dark environment where they took shelter. Then it turns back to western genre in its last minutes. For me, a western movie lover, it's a precious piece of the cinema. 😍😍😍

I’m not sorry that I purchased this set in the least bit, but “Drive a Crooked Road” and “The Lineup” are the only stars here. I feel like they’re beginning to dredge the bottom with these releases. I own Volume 2 and the completist in me wants to order the remaining two sets, but I just don’t know. I already own all these films on DVD and I’m having a hard time justifying the expense. But I really want them on my shelf, you know? First world problems, I know..

Steve, I totally agree. Lineup and Crooked Road are definitely the high points of Vol. 2. The Sniper is the star of vol. 3 for me, and Vol. 4 has Pushover and The Brothers Rico, but some of the others in that set are weak. I'm a completist as well, so I'm probably in for the long haul. We'll see if they come up with a Vol. 5, but you're right - There's probably not that much left from the Columbia noirs.

@@journeysindarknessandlight5775 Hey Andy - 'Moseby Confidential: AP's Night Moves and the rise of Neo-Noir' was avilable in Australia - and a great read. Thanks for that - it got me to watch 'Night Moves' again and realise the ending was more ambiguous than I remembered. Also learned that the phrase, 'like watching paint dry' referred to Claude Chabrol films in Sharp's script but Penn changed it to refer to Éric Rohmer films. Most Chabrol are too well paced to dry paint. Love Rohmer, but I can see why Moseby may have felt that way. John Grant's 'A Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Film Noir: The Essential Reference Guide' must have been sourced overseas, but it just arrived, the intro was fun, and it looks like it will be an invaluable resource - especially for the generally obscure film noir that seems to make it onto YT.

Chris, thanks for watching! I saw something about Bob Furmanek at 3D Film Archive announcing back in 2017 that he was restoring it, but I haven't found anything solid, so that may not be accurate. Locating a good print may also be a problem. It seems like Eddie Muller may have mentioned this in an Ask Eddie episode awhile back. Wish I had a more solid answer...

Gah! Everything happens at once. Of course, I'll be out of town the entire time Eddie Muller is there, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it up during the rest of it. I'm going to try, dang it.
