I learned to surf last month in Costa Rica at the age of 63. 5 days with a one on one surf pro. I am good enough for waist height green waves now. Love it. I'm hooked and planning on my next trip. I am a Canadian. I needed to prepare and get in shape...it was worth it and the fitness regimen stuck.

This is so wonderful to see. Congratulations did you use the teak logs fresh or where they allowed to dry. If fresh, wouldn't they shrink overtime? I'll like to find out for my upcoming project. Thank you.

It may be unlikely but I would be terrified to be down there with the chance of that hole caving in. There would be no escape and no one could save you in time

Putting your foot or shin on the tail causes the board to shoot to the surface way too soon under a big wave. Shove the board down with all the speed you can get and level the board out when you get it to depth so it STAYS DOWN. You will be glad you did this ducking a 15-foot -whitewater washingmachine, and even then it's likely still to pick you up and pummel the crap out of you. 🤣 Sometimes, no matter how good you duck, you're better off bailing and swimming deep and pray your leash doesn't snap. 🙏🌊

Back in the day, 40+ years ago, we didn't use "kook cords"; we HAD to duck dive and, with longboards, "go turtle" wrapping your legs around the board and holding on for dear life. It's pretty hectic going turtle under a large wave and have it pick you up and slam you over the falls a few times... don't do it with someone else nearby or someone is likely to get seriously injured. 😳 Get a long, fat cord and anchor it with TWO plugs, one on each side of the stringer, and replace the cord if it gets fin-cuts. Don't risk your safety when you really don't have to, trying to duck large waves. ✝️

I have always wondered why this is not the standard way to build a roof with an open air gap, and why instead they place this giant heat capture conductor on the house and spend thousands in electricity to pump the heat back out. We assume the people who build things are smart but they're usually not and just do things the way they were taught.

Thanks for the part about how to actually get your foot onto the tail pad. I've watched several other duck dive videos and they all ignored that part. I have been using the "knee out to the side" technique that you criticize in the video, and and it hasn't been working well for me. Also, the "tilt the board" trick for duck diving a bigger board sounds useful, and I hadn't seen that mentioned anywhere else either. With a bigger bored I always turtle roll, but I'll try this tilt technique on some little waves next time I'm out with the mini mal ...

I don't think you can survive a turtle roll on a wave that's big enough that you have to do one. You will get worked. Good demonstration. Honestly I'm not to hyped on surf instructions. You just have to learn on your own by getting worked and understanding the dynamics of a to z.

Good point. Take your time. I’ll definitely use that bi always seem to be wanting to rush and I fall off the board. But it’s interesting that you a professional says use the rails every other instructor says holding the rails makes the board unstable. So many conflicting ways.

I have a question for you I am looking at ordering a rusty DWART and I am wondering if you have ridden both the DWART one and two and which one you prefer and if this is still your favorite board? I have been looking at the rusty I DWART one and two as well as the DMIN right now

Good video. Additionally, after learning the basics shown here, you gotta learn to squeeze your elbows towards each other after you push the board under. Sometimes when duck diving big whitewater, you will lose the board and it is going to hit you in the face. You prevent this by keeping your arms in between you and the board. OP knows this. Easier to demonstrate. Maybe a good topic for another video.
