You missed the ultimate best kind of all! As a child, in my backyard there was a tree that, from the base to about 10 feet off the ground, grew at a 45 degree angle. About 5 feet above the bend where it went from 45 degrees to vertical, I attached a rope. Swinging away from the tree, there was the usual long pendulum motion, but when the rope hit the tree, I could pump with my legs (I stood on the loop at the bottom)and the sudden truncating of the length of the pendulum increased my velocity rapidly, the thrill was exhilarating. Somebody please build one of these and let me know how much fun you have.

I don’t think the argument was so much about the unpredictable wear. It was about the rope wrench collapsing on the zig zag links and can cause collapse.

What is the maximum height with a two rope swing that a person can pump themselves? My limb is 23’ from the ground. It is close to horizontal. I did not off set the ropes like you do so one of my ropes is about an inch longer. I used a bowline knot with a Scott’s stopper knot and then duct taped the tails of the rope. Then put the other end of the ropes through the loop and pulled them around the branch. I just can’t seem to get it going very high. I also built a swing out of lumber and chain that is 9’ off the ground and I seem to be able to get this one higher off the ground, but of course the arc is shorter. I was wondering the physical limits of a person being able to swing, but I think that movement of the branch, stretching of the rope, and any unevenness of rope length further reduce the maximum swing potential. My 9’ swing is very sturdy and solid and of course the chains don’t stretch. So I’m wondering if this is the reason it swings better or is the arc on the 23’ swing just beyond the physical limits of body weight being able to power it. I’d love to learn more about those physics and if there are any tricks to gain additional height. Thanks!

To reiterate what others have said, thank you so much for making this video. Clears up the functional and safety concerns regarding the Zig Zag plus in an SRT configuration and your scientific assessments leave no stone unturned. Wouldn't surprise me if Petzl proffered this video in promotion of the Zig Zag. Wish videos with this level of detail existed for many other arb products. Many thanks again 👏👍

it seems like the weight of the line will start pulling the tree over. This does not seem like a healthy rig for the tree. Why not use a strong post that has two or more steel cables anchoring it to the ground?
