Before my father died when I was 4, he taught me to sing. I had to run a gauntlet of soul destroying vandals that broke me into a million pieces after he was gone. But singing was my secret weapon. It soothed and comforted me. At 17 I was trying to launch myself into adulthood without a lick of help from anyone. I had no idea how broken I was. In my little apartment on my first record player I listened to my first JM album. Now, at 70 I realize Joni entered my heart and kicked the doors wide open for that 17 yr old girl. I may have been far more stunted by the damage I had suffered were it not for her. Her music became a medicine to me. It opened me up and started the process of picking up the pieces and figuring out who I was or wanted to be. Her music wove its way into my inner world, serving as a teacher and also a magic carpet ride. I wish it could have been the perfect tonic for all my ills, but the truth is life has felt like being in an alligator’s death roll, an uphill struggle all the way. But I know for a fact my heart is wider and deeper and stronger because of Joni Mitchell. To this day I’m still riding Joni’s magic carpet ride. Today I have lots of musical loves, but NO ONE takes me on a deeper dive than Joan. I love her. And I am so grateful to her. 💞

A fascinating doc which really helps one understand who Joni is. I think she is finally being celebrated for all the right reasons and really appreciating it, at last. A unique talent.

I grew up with Joni Mitchell's songs. It shaped the woman I am today. Especially the song...I wish I had a river I could skate away on 😢

Good God ,,,Do not make Joni embrace or endorse Taylor Swift at the Grammies. Joni is about life and love. Taylor is about little things. No comparison,

The work she did with Charles Mingus’ music is really a testament to her talent. Nothing she can’t do but lie. She is a truth teller through & through.

Here on Joni’s 80th for another watch - I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this doc. Every time the woman talks about I Had A King, I burst into tears. There is something about Joni… A once in a century talent. No one like her. Like a comet passing by. Bright, shining, other-worldly ❤

I had a tape of Hejira when I was in high school, and later became completely transfixed by this woman and her music. The word genius gets thrown around a lot these days, but in her case it definitely applies. A truly singular talent, and one of the main reasons I still play guitar myself.

She felt like she was responsible for living out grandmothers and great grandmothers dreams - she gave up her romantic love for a ghosts dream that had become her own❤ that’s very beautiful

We were going away when Joni changed styles...she worried about it. I just think she was ahead of us and we needed time to catch up! I know this because I am still catching up on the work she did; and I love all of it! She had the insight to know she went to far and backed off a bit. Thank goodness...because I would need another lifetime to get it! I wouldn't of wanted to miss it!

She didn't want taylor swift playing her, she barely knows who taylor swift is. She didn't want a docudrama made about her life. For these few things I respect her. Plus she's an awesome singer.

My running joke about both of them is that Taylor traveled back in time somehow so Joni could take her portrait for the Clouds album. But seriously, while both may be successful singer/songwriters and both in their own way do make comments about the human condition… Joni’s references to sex (as in, yes, coitus) were in the service of making a larger commentary on herself and others in both good and bad behaviors - to paraphrase what Joni herself said on the live Miles Of Aisles album, hers were songs of hopefulness and disappointments. And her honesty in her lyrics was and is still resonant and appealing. Taylor, on the other hand, seems more interested in justifying her actions in a way Joni never wanted to. But that sort of thing has always attracted “the masses” in the way that Joni’s songs, even for her own success, has not. But that is a major reason why I like Joni’s singing and songs more - her way of expressing herself and telling stories isn’t as off-putting as Taylor’s songs are. Joni isn’t trying to hammer the point(s) of her lyrics into anyone’s head or heart…because subtlety and no-frills in one’s presentation sometimes - make that most of the time - make for a more pervasive influence (just ask Madonna AND the living members of Led Zeppelin, plus Prince also mentioned Joni as an inspiration). Nothing against Taylor personally nor her success - she earned it. But Joni just has this incredible ability and presence that I have always liked and appreciated.

We can't return, we can only look behind from where we came. The most talented person ever. Well, there was Leonardo Da Vinci, but his song writing and musicianship probably wasn't as good as hers.

What a wonderful artist and human being , an absolute icon in every way. Blue was the first album I bought of hers back in 1971. Her music transcends generations , and so glad my grown up daughters love her too. My Sophie always plays River and Case of You on the piano at Xmas , always brings a tear to my eye.
