John Lennon was not perfect. No one is. But he deserves more credit than this. As for the lyrics to Imagine; for some people anything that does not extol amoral, un-restricted, free-enterprise greed is communist.

Key to Lennon’s song is imagining there’s no religion…which has been a source of strife and war throughout history. Only a fool would say John Lennon is a fool! Steely Dan could only dream of being as talented as the Beatles. In this Era of Mean, an idealistic song is dissed by this untalented narrator. No, Fagin mocked Lennon out of jealousy, not a good quality to possess.

What's funny about all this, is that this is a direct diss on John Lennon's persona not his music or even his views. But as a repudiation of his views, it falls short in every way. In Imagine, John Lennon isn't asking poor people to be ok with it, he's asking them to imagine something. And all the things he asks his listeners to imagine are man-made. This song will live on forever for a reason, despite seemingly simple, the lyrics call for the act of imagining a reality that many actively choose not to. Still, I get it, no one wants to listen to the annoying rich person, except when that rich person that is only trying to advocate for peace gets murdered. "everybody on the street has murder in his eyes" there's been different interpretations of this line, but what would end up happening to Lennon makes it crazy.

Even in the last years of the Beatles my friends + I used to roll our eyes at Lennon's latest self-important "profound declaration". We loved John, but knew he could be full of shit sometimes.

A lot of people have been duped by the sugar-coated words of commercial musicians for decades. No, Lennon's not the only one. But it's remarkable how many people bought that communist tripe from a millionaire who wanted to destroy Western culture. So many of them became rich and famous by marketing the holes in their lives that eat away at them in their beds at night. Also, I still get a laugh out of knowing Steely Dan is named after a sex toy.

It seems John had profound childhood losses. Through his youth, he covered his grief and fears with bravado that often came out as bitter sarcasm and cruel anger. As a young man he would mug drunks and, when one resisted, John beat him severely then feared he'd left the man for dead. His moderate poly-substance use disorder was growing at this time, a disease which he'd try in vain to control. His brilliant wit and songwriting talent enabled him to use the Beatles to build a broad support network which enabled his addictive disease. As his disease became severe he became increasingly violent, seeking bar fights as entertainment with his friend Harry Nillson. He once grabbed Peter Lawford by the collar and put his fist to Lawford's face (Lennon sent an explicit apology the next day which confirms the story). Demonstrating hippie values was a feeble best effort to counter his rage and self-hatred; he was powerless over his childhood grief and illness, and his addictions were enabled by so many people, that he didn't stand a chance. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

I remember seeing Lou Reed standing in the wings at the Apollo in Glasgow (1978) when Bowie made his 'comeback' after he supposedly retired when 'The Spiders from Mars' broke-up - and by the looks of it, he enjoyed himself just as much as the audience enjoyed it!. It WAS a superb concert !

Uuuhhh...! I never liked Lou Reed! Could imagine he was an asshole. Some stuff of him is really good, like the "Transformer"-album. But AS a Person and later Artist He is/was nothings less as boring. - The only "band" I agree with him is these boring Beatles, just a Studio "band".

I actually really like Steely Dan as a band, but wow, such hypocracy.... As good as they are in their own right, individually or colletively you cant match an absolute collosus such as the Beatles or their remnants. Accept that, its' just true. Jealousy doesn't make you look good. On another issue, you seem to treat your own fans pretty awfully, I live in the UK and I decided as a treat to myself to buy an executive ticket for one of your tours. You didn't even acknowledge us fans... I have guitar teched for the likes of Joe Walsh in the US and have never seen such disregard for ones own supporters. Just gives you an idea of who (In my opinion) you find important.

Zappa brought Dada style deconstruction to pop and rock n roll, which I really couldn't understand because Dada was all about deconstructing high culture not pop culture. In fact Dada led to Pop Art and Warhol, and Lichtenstein, that celebrated pop culture opposed to the high minded seriousness of abstract expressionism i.e. Pollack. Rothko, De kooning . Now you might argue that rock n roll started taking itself too seriously in the late 60s and early 70s so needed bringing down a peg or two, but even so it never became high brow, more lower sixth pretension. In fact you might argue that Zappa himself represented the highbrow in terms of rock n roll. Which put him in a very small camp. basically him and Beefheart, However, even Beefheart still had one foot firmly planted in the blues camp, more surrealist experimentalist blues-man than Dadaist deconstructionist. Moreover, Beefheart became an abstract painter, and just to pile contradiction upon contradiction, Zappa became a critic of punk, the de facto Dadaist response to the pretension of prog rock, and worse still, Zappa even criticized punk bands for their amateurish musicianship. . . In other words, Zappa's. attempt to deconstruct rock n roll was somewhat confused and pseudo intellectual. He wasn't as smart as he thought he was. Kinda like the people who used to take the piss out of the bad dubbing in spaghetti westerns, missing the point that spaghetti westerns were already taking the piss. Basically rock n roll didn't really warrant post modern deconstruction because it was already post modern.

When Lennon started expressing his political ideas, I was fifteen or sixteen. I thought at the time that it was ridiculous for a pop star to think we all should respect and follow his "leadership." I was certainly a Beatles fan, but this was just out of line.

Reed was a hack ! When he says Zappa couldn't play, it's because he only knew 2 or 3 chords and it confused his small/dull brain. Listen to San Francisco's 'Moby Grape' or 'It's a Beautiful Day' and tell me they couldn't play. What a loser !
