It’s a great lens and very sharp from corner to corner but it’s slow. It’s great for outside / daytime photography and landscape photography. Also for filming kids playing outdoors. I compared it to my Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 + FTZ2 adapter and the Sigma really outshines the 12-28mm in terms of cinematic rendering. But the 12-28mm remains a great little lens. They should have made it F2 or F3.5 constant.

I bought this lens new a few weeks ago. I see that the edges of the front glass are not sealed, there is a considerable gap between the edges of the front glass and the plastic that covers those edges. I'm afraid it affects the weather sealing. Anyone having the same problem?

question: the vid suggests in top right corner e.g. 6:00 that 24-200mmS - I think it is a mistake. And as always a great review!

The 180-600mm looks sharper at 600 than the 400 at 600mm f6.3 w/ teleconverter on my screen. They are both really sharp though so I wouldn't base my decision on that.

Why dont camera manufactures add a 'lock' just like a lock on an iphone??? These cameras cost 3 times as much as an iphone-more with a lens-they should have a lock feature to access the camera. It's easy to add with a touch screen & they could have an option to set it to come on after a certain time or turn off all together if desired.

Since you kindly offered...does it take normal, non-Nikon 46mm filters please? (I heard one of the others only accepted Nikon filters)

Awesome review! The F mount can probably be gotten used in good condition for considerably less money, and given their relatively close performance and the slightly better made in Japan build, I would go for a good used F mount lens.

24th May 2024. Based on this, and one or two other, reviews, I picked up one of these lenses today for my Zf. I think quality control must have improved because the lens slid effortlessly onto the camera with the same silky-smooth feel as a Nikkor unit. I did as you suggested and updated the firmware straight away and that too, was really easy. Thanks for this video, Ricci, it was really helpful.

Wow. I think I will be sending beck my fF mount lens which I just bought, and investing in the much more pricey z lens. I did not think the sharpness difference would be this much. Thank you!

We are nearing the end of May and no pixel shift firmware update for the Z9, if perhaps the video portion of the Z9 is stopping this upgrade for me personally I don’t need video and would happily lose video for pixel shift. I would even be prepared to pay for this upgrade!

Ricci, have you ever heard chatter about an FTZ that includes an aperture feeler for our old AI-S type glass? If not, could you please pass along? It's one of those things that I feel is really holding the ZF back from "fully supporting" 6 decades of great, SMALL, MF optics that simply don't exist on Z.

Great comparison and I think the 600 pf is a future goal for me. I have the 180-600 right now after using and loving the 200-500 for a few years. I think I might have a bad copy of the 180-600 as I'm really struggling to get the same sharpness as my previous 200-500. I love the 600mm reach and the ergonomics of it, but something is just off with the sharpness despite all the reviews that say it's a sharp lens. I'm not expecting prime-level sharpness, but it's not even matching the 200-500.

Angelbird SE and Delkin black are the same. MK2 is faster and colder than DelBlack… and MK2 (2tb) costs $450 and Delkin Black 0,5 tb costs $500. So there’s nothing to compare at all🤷🏻‍♂️

Great tuition but come on Ricci we use the U settings for speed so why not allow us to set the higher frames for wildlife whilst retaining the single frame for landscape...i just dont get it, a simple firware update...my z50 stores the single and 11 frames settings perfectly....oh and finally you ended by saying let you know about any comments or questions in the comments below...but you very rarely ever answer, ... strange

Ricci! Thank you for your videos! 👌 I still have my 85 1.8G and keep thinking of switching to the 85 1.8S. I fear it's just a case of Nikon Gear Acquisition Syndrome though. I already have the the 24-70 & 70-200 2.8S, 28 & 40 SE, 24-200 S & 180-600 ℤ-mount lenses for my ℤ f.

Great video! Morten is my absolute favorit in wildlife photography, this fact alone makes me evaluating switching to nikon from canon, such a great gear, images are saying everything, this guy only can be right.... But, luckily for my bank account, this top lenses are so freaking expensive. The canon rf 100-500 is my limit, pricewise.... Does Nikon have something compareable, or maybe planed!? Thx!

Back in November I was looking for an upgrade for my D500, a brilliant camera in it's own right and I found myself more and more shooting with my venerable FM2, I was resigned that Nikon was nowhere in enthusiast mirrorless space and was about to pull the trigger on the Canon R6 II, but your video one fine morning made me sit up in bed, wide eyed and immediately go to Nikon website... The rest as they say is history !!

Thank you, Great review. I decided to buy this lens based on your review. I already have the Nikon 500 F4 VR2, This is a great lens but i feel that i can do more with this lens. The editing from Photoshop will compensate for sharpness and saturation contrast.

I bought the Viltrox a few months ago for my Z9 and needed to immediately update the firmware. Before the update, the image in the EVF was around 2 frames per second and obviously unusable. Updating the firmware, from memory it's now v1.2.4, fixed everything although I've rarely taken off the Nikkor 24-120 f/4 S I bought with the camera.

@nikonricci Your videos on the Nikon lenses and cameras are a wonderful resource. I go back to your videos time and time again for information. I was using a Z5 for about 2 years and then moved on to a Z8 last year. I recently purchased a Zf as an everyday carry. I didn’t care for the 40mm f2 until I got my Zf. I have shot a few thousand images with the 40mm by now and I think it’s a wonderful lens. As you mentioned, the 40mm f2 is not as sharp as the 50mm f1.8 but the images that come out of it testifies to its character. The combination of the monochrome mode on the Zf and this lens has allowed me to explore B&W and manual photography, in a way I have never done before. I love it, so much so that my 24-120mm doesn’t get any use on the Zf. However I feel like Nikon should also make a sort of “PRO” version which is fully manual (i.e Focus and Aperture) while keeping the lens the same size. Something similar to the AF-D 35mm f2. While there are alternatives such as Voigtlanders, and upcoming Chinese lenses, I think nothing would be beat native Nikkor Z lenses for price and quality. Thanks.

Thank you, Ricci, for putting this in-depth video together! I am not a photographer, but am an Iridologist, taking eye pics. I just purchased the Z50 so I could still use my old special adaptors. This video really helped me to learn to use the setting so that my eye pics are clearer. Thanks again! Crystal
