Tony Hawk's Pro Skater came out September 29, 1999. Hawk landed the 900 on June 27, 1999 (watched it live). THPS on the PS1 does have the 900 its Right, Down, O. What's crazy about it is soon after Tony Hawk landed the 900 he called Neversoft up and told them what happened and how it needed to be in the game. The game had gone gold or was very near to going gold and Neversoft said "Don't worry about it, we got it." and squeezed it into the game at the last moment.

Great video! In my childhood I was a Nintendo FunClub then Nintendo Power, and eventually an EGM subscriber. I occasionally read GamePro but that was mostly it. I did read Game Informer for a bit too, but mostly because I got them for free when I worked for Funcoland. I really enjoy let's read videos on the mags I did read for the nostalgia, and others like ExpertGamers to see what I missed out on.

The look backs are always worth it. Your love for Gran Turismo definitely shows, and it was a good balance of games that ExpertGamer covered. Dreamcast ads were disappointing but I could see what they were trying.

You asked if any of those Dukes of Hazzard cast members were still alive. The one who was most recently in the news wasn't actually in the cast liat for the game you read out. Bo Duke's actor apparently didn't have time to be in that game back then, but he recently had time to tweet out a death threat on the US president. He also married Paul Sorvino's widow so is in a weird way (not actually) Mira Sorvino' stepdad.

I wasn't listening closely enough and initially misheard the Todd Zuniga part about pink hair and kissing strange women as being about Todd Howard and thought I was getting some crazy new gossip.

The trouble with the Roguelike/Roguelike debate is that no one really seems to agree on where the line is. Does it need to be turn-based? Does it need ASCII graphics? Does it need permadeath? Personally, I kinda like the idea of "Roguelike Mechanics" rather than getting bogged down in semantics. Kinda like how tons of games have "RPG Progression Systems" in them without strictly being Role Playing Games.

i just suffocated under 2h of pure nostalgie. I've only played RR2 on PSP. I got it for Christmas in a PSP bundle when I was around 7 years old. It was the only game i've had for a year, and I fully completed it. (Even if the max campaign was only completed years later). RR2 PSP was a gigantic compilation of all previous game, with tons of different cars ands tracks. I remember unlocking cutscene from previous game when progressing in the campaign mode. I've watched those video thousands of times. Today I just understood everything was coming from previous games, which explain the diversity in tracks and styles. The Musics was also perfect. Almost 20 years later, this game remains my best videogames souvenir. Also, pressing the select button while selecting a track or a car would load a mirrored version of the track and give you unlimited nitro. Thanks for this great video.

In retrospect I find calling Pokemon the definitive BB game more than appropriate. No other game on the platform took advantage of the quirks of the hardware like Pokemon. More so than just multiplayer it used the link cable so that two players could leave a lasting impression on each others games in such a unique way. The portable nature of the game made it easy for kids to show off there creature collections and game progress to each other. Gold/Silver doubled down on taking advantage of bespoke hardware features utilizing the GBC IR sensor and the addition of a functional clock made the world feel more dynamic. Crystal would go onto even support cellular networks in the JP version for a whole host of unique features.

Pretty sure I saw the exact same guide for GT2, including the screenshots, in the Greek version of the official Playstation magazine, although I don't remember which issue number it was, but I do remember it was a special issue featuring only racing game guides.

That's fascinating! I'd love to see a scan of that but not sure where to find that online. I know that Ziff Davis had content deals with sister magazines in other parts of the world. I remember seeing translations of some of our reviews in EGM Brasil (I think that's where it was, anyway), so it wouldn't surprise me to learn that some Expert Gamer content may have been reprinted in other countries as well.

45:25 id like to correct this. GT1 was all on one disc, but came in a double-stacked jewel case to fit the extra manual. GT2 was the only one in the series to come on two discs until the PS4 version of GT7, which comes with an install disc and a play disc. also, that story about winning the contest on Trial Mountain was REALLY cool. do you remember what the car was? obviously they would have had you all driving in the same car to keep things fair, right?
@sewart
@sewart 2 күн бұрын
Right, my bad! I honestly don't remember what car it was, sorry. But yeah we all had to use the same car. I wonder if there was a one-lap trial in the game itself that they were using for the contest. I should check that out.

23:35 Sega blacklisted their own first party Japanese Dreamcast light gun in House of the Dead 2 so the gun doesn't work in the North American version of the game. The game still supported light guns, you just had to use a third party one because of the blacklisting (and Sega not releasing their first party gun in North America anyway). The "official" light gun for the Dreamcast in North America was from Mad Catz. I believe it was the only third party light gun licensed by Sega, which made it de facto "official" and people confused it for being the same gun as the first party Sega light gun (the same way people keep confusing the Xbox Series Expansion Cards from Seagate and WD to be first party peripherals from Microsoft, when they are really licensed products from third parties and there was never any Microsoft branded Expansion Cards for the Xbox Series).

The effort, content, accuracy, editing, documentary of this video deserves 25m views, not 25k. Congrats ❤ As for the series, because even if I'm a sim racer, I would say that Ridge Racer is the only REAL arcade racer, not trying to be in between sim and arcade. I owned all of the titles from PS1 , I've played thousands of hours and the enjoyment back then was top notch . Nowadays I'm back with emulators spending time with Ridge Racer series in my breaks from Iracing. Right now I'm playing Ridge RacerV on Pcsx2

When Galaxian went in the PSX release of Ridge Racer it was then 15 years old. That was 30 years ago, sad but makes sense Ridge Racer is being used as IP for off topic games that many years later.

Great to have this video to learn about one of my favorite arcade racers of all time. Its a shame that the hope for it ever returning is so slim, I think everyday about it. Hopefully, just HOPEFULLY, there’s something we don’t know about. Especially since SEGA is doing their “revive classic games” strategy now, maybe Namco could feel pressure to do the same. I did some research of my own; I’m really surprised that you never touched on the Ridge Racer 8 leak for Nintendo Switch. Apparently it was on someone’s portfolio as a 2018 game that unfortunately never came out. I really hope we get a surprise someday this century!

Honestly, I don't exactly trust the Bandai Namco of today to really do a new Ridge Racer. A lot of Namco's legacy IPs outside of the likes of PAC-MAN, Tekken and Ace Combat have largely been abandoned in favor of making licensed anime games. While those sorts of games are not a personal interest of mine, I won't disregard other's enjoyment of those games and series. It's just that this heavy push to develop those games show off that the Bandai side of Bandai Namco has more influence in what games are made than the Namco side. If the current Bandai Namco were to consider doing a new Ridge Racer, I don't exactly know if they would do it well as they'll probably include some sort of unnecessary caveat that dampers the experience. The only way I can see Ridge Racer being reborn is from someone developing an indie game inspired by it's legacy.

@@sewart This isn't just an issue with Ridge Racer, pretty much all of Namco's classic catalogue IPs have been sat on and done nothing with for decades at this point. Characters like Dig Dug, Mappy, Gil, and others from Namco's Arcade lineup of the 80s/early 90s have been left to rot in obscurity in favor of these licensed games. I wish that Bandai Namco could focus some of their efforts into revitalizing and bringing some new light into those IPs that have been pretty much laying dormant for so long. Maybe find a way to integrate the characters and Worlds into the PAC-MAN series at least? I don't know, I just don't want to have to wait for the next Namco Museum or whatever for those games and characters to receive recognition again. If they don't then it's up to us as fans to try and show them how much we really care. For my part, I've had some ideas cooking that I can't detail publicly, but those that I have shared my concepts with find my ideas to be interesting...
