Andrew hey. Great ride. You, so far are the only A rider that has one of these that I know of. There are quite a few other videos on this bike now but I don't feel like they tell me the whole story as most are using it to bop around on or as a "grocery getter" dual sport. I'm an aggressive A rider. I raced KDX200 and 220s. I love the engine of the KDX especially after a pipe swap with an FMF product. There truly was a gear for every situation with stock final drive sprockets. The KDX could be lugged way down load and not stall and was easy to get the wheel over obstacles.. The downside of the KDX is the conventional fork. Soft and flexes a lot. I see the TSE has geometry closer to the YX250X in regards to it's wheelbase and head angle (rake/trail). So that's a good thing. But how does TSE feel after the suspension has been dialed in for you and how easy is it to get that front wheel over things? The KDX could get that wheel up from first to fourth without a problem. I'm super curious to know your thought on this bike. I'm asking you because the guys at Rocky Mountain did a "review" on this bike and didn't even adjust the suspension to his weight...very obvious by the video footage . I honestly would have expected a more thorough review for a professional ATV/Motorcycle company's video. Can you shed some light on this stuff? Thanks man.
@andrewgore1
@andrewgore1 4 жыл бұрын
The bike isn't what I'd refer to as a screamer. I've since upgraded mine with the race cdi (not sure if I had it for this race), which upped the timing down low and helped with a bit of overrev. I've also done the larger carb & new pipe, which gave a bit more mid\top end to the engine. Still not a total powerhouse, but for most riding, its about where I'd want it. With regards to the suspension, I'm usually not the best to provide feedback, as my standard response with anything suspension is "just ride around it". This comes from growing up on bikes with crappy suspension, and just having to deal with it. That said, I will say that the stock suspension is far more inline with my pace than the stock WP stuff that was on my old 2013 KTM 350exc. The TSE takes hits far better, and doesn't just blow out when on MX stuff. I'm comfortable pushing the bike as fast as I can in the woods as well. It does feel planted. Should be spending some time soon here in some singletrack & rocky terrain, so I'm curious how I'll jive with it in that. The area that the bike does fall flat is that its about 40# too heavy. No, it doesn't ride like it is, but mine on a certified pallet scale tipped in at 272#. Yes, you read that right. The overall weight of it kills a bit of that nimble 2T feeling. Despite the weight, I have no issues with taking the bike on some more trials type obstacles (tractor tires\concrete ledges\etc). It requires plenty of body input and throttle\clutch work, but it does it with relative ease. There is no real easy way to drop the weight of the bike though. Rear shock body is steel. Wheelsets could be swapped, as mine felt incredibly heavy when I spooned on new tires. The stock FastAce* forks are arguably overly complex, with added weight. Frame, plastics.....just kind of a domino affect. I hate to sound wishy washy on the bike, but its kinda where I stand. As someone who's come from the overall quality fit\finish of the KTM 350, I struggle with some of the hodge-podge feeling of the TSE. Seeing how a new 350 tips the bank scales at 10k$, I can live with some of those shortcomings. Other details.......knowing what I know now, I'd rather pay a premium. I guess I can sum things up this way.......I went back to a 2T after buying into the hype that 2T was end all be all of woods stuff. I don't 100% agree with that, but that's my opinion. A new TSE lists at 5600$, which sounds like there are a few left new at the ~4k$ range. There are some leftover Yamaha WR250F's for sub $6500 I'd rather spend the couple k$ premium for a known brand, with known suspension, known parts, etc. Especially if doing any faster levels of racing. If you have any other specific questions, let me know. *Suspension Note: I guess GPX changed from FastAce suspension to SCZ or something like that. I have no idea what those are like.
@christopherfcunha
@christopherfcunha 4 жыл бұрын
 Andrew Gore Hey thanks for the all the great information. I too feel very similar to your opinions regarding hodge-podge fit and finish. I mean if they can do it sort of wrong...they can do it right. The weight is really really high too! I have seen a video or two on the Fastace suspension. With all that steel in that suspension I'm sure that is partly what takes the overall weight of the bike to new limits. Hell and it's that heavy with a small fuel tank. I see later videos of your TSE with turn signals. Did you give up on taking it seriously and convert it over to a dual sport bike? I'm still very confused why any company would set up to make a positive impact on the "big four" and Euro bikes but why start with an engine that's 25 years old and 25cc short of a 250. So the engine sounds like magic but it's already at a disadvantage on displacement alone. I don't get it. I think the chassis was a great choice in terms of geometry but of all the engines they could have knocked off why that one? I think they could have been better off knocking off the KDX from 1995-2006. Anyway, your honest opinion at your riding level is what I really wanted to know and I did suspect that I was going to hear some of this. I'm not sure what to do but my choice was getting another KDX 2000-2006, rip it all apart, rebuild and tweak the hell out of it to make it what I know it can be. The other option was the YZ250X which I know is sort of in a different class compared to the KDX but I'm not so sure it would matter at this point to me. I can tell you that the wheel base and head angle of the TSE is almost t exact to the YZX and most other "serious" off road bikes. I'm sure it's a bit more tractable and more stable than the KDX is. Ok thanks again for taking the time to give your opinion on this bike. Maybe if GPX takes all of this feedback seriously they may get it right in up coming model years. Thanks again man.
@andrewgore1

@@christopherfcunha I had the lights\signals on it when I was commuting on it. Kind of fun ripping a 2T on the road. It's back down to setup for racing\dirt work. Also now has a 2.6 gallon tank, which is so much more useful. That goes back to what you said regarding "do it right". They copied the MX Husky bikes, with their tiny gas tanks. Not a great idea. As far as I recall, the factory was able to buy this engine tooling from Yamaha. It's a solid engine, and probably seemed like a solid platform to begin from, without copying a YZ250 engine or something like that. Owning this though, you are quickly reminded that its an engine from the 90's. It's heavy, and there are many conveniences that they figured out for repair\maintenance to make work much easier. It is what it is though. I will say that compared to your KDX, this doesn't have a cramped chassis. A 2000 KDX is 20 years old now and is gonna be loose as a goose. I'd sooner start with something fresh.
@christopherfcunha
@christopherfcunha 4 жыл бұрын
@@andrewgore1 Yup. Some of their decisions just don't make sense to me. I mean if you're going to manufacturer the first Chinese full size two stroke do a little more home work and begin with a more capable platform. I think they had a big chance to show many serious riders that they can make a race competitive bike. I honestly think that what the intent was but I think the lack of understanding and experience with bikes of that nature lead them to take the easier way out. Especially with the engine. It seems like it's a great engine but right from the get-go it's not a 250cc and it's 1990s heavy. Combined this with the steel in a lot of the components...well ya know. I'm not sure what to think when comparing the KDX to the TSE. The KDX is old for sure but it has one of the most ridged steel frames that I know of and there is no way in hell I would ever buy one and not replace every bushing, bearing, etc. Being only 5'6" 140lbs I didn't find the KDX cramped but the smaller wheel base, conventional flexy fork and steeper head angle are going against it for sure. So so went to your website. Nice shots and a very very well done review of the TSE. The best by far that I've seen. This kind of quality is very hard to find. 99 percent of a "review" video is 10 minutes of GoPro cam footage of a D skill rider coming off of a Honda Gold Wing with irrelevant topics that offer little to help a potential buyer of the bike to go on. Up until now this is more or less what's I've been able to take from much of the videos and write ups. The big magazines like Dirt Bike immediately pass the bike as "not a racer" but a play bike...although they said that about the KDX too and Jeff Fredette won a billions races on that. Ahhhh So would you have bought the bike again if you know what you know based on what you place on using the bike for?
@andrewgore1
@andrewgore1 4 жыл бұрын
@@christopherfcunha To answer your last question, in hindsight, no I'd not buy one again. Knowing how I ride, and the little free-time I do have, I don't want to spend my time sorting out new model issues. I was also reminded how much I like Fuel Injection, and don't like dealing with carbs. That's not a fault of this 2T, but a reminder that I don't want to deal with them. As noted earlier, if I knew then what I know now, I'd have gone with a WR250F\WR450F, or even a YZ250FX.

Andrew Gore thanks for the reply, do you know what their manual says for scheduled maintenance ? I wasn’t sure whether this engine is meant for longevity or it’s a high performance ktm like engine? Any idea?
@andrewgore1
@andrewgore1 4 жыл бұрын
@@LCARSADV There are no manuals for the bike (from GPX). The motor was originally designed by Yamaha for the DT230 in the late 90's. The DT230 was meant for street\light trail use, so as I understand, the engine was designed to fit that, with nods back to the IT enduros. It is a very robust engine, with a low compression ratio. It's a very wide 6 speed transmission, so its a bit "off" if you're MX acer, but for dual sport or woods, its pretty solid. If you do want a bit more pep, GPX has a CDI, pipe, intake, and carb update which helps broaden the power delivery of the bike. It is still smooth and tractable (IMO thanks to the heavy crank\flywheel\balancer). For the price GPX is blowing out their last few, it is really a hard one to not give a try.

So far bike is pretty solid. I've been using mostly for commuting lately, but have now just put it back to dirt trim to get in some local Enduros & Harescrambles. They (GPX) keeps rolling out upgrades and improvements to the bikes. I just got the bigger tank, new expansion chamber, and larger carb, so I'm anxious to see how it rides with that. Supposed to provide a bit more pep.
