38:28, Excerpt from VIRGIL, Aeneid: No monster more baneful than these, no fiercer plague or wrath of the gods ever rose from the Stygian waves. Maiden faces have these birds, foulest filth they drop, clawed hands are theirs, and faces ever gaunt with hunger...

Harriet Walter and Edward Petherbridge were perfectly cast and this television series was the best version of Dorothy Sayers' work I've ever seen. It was only a great pity that Gaudy Night was crammed into so few episodes when it needed more.

I'd watch Harriet Waller read the phone book. Dropping this comment so I'll remember to watch this later. Lol.

Loved this series years ago, so happy to see it again. Harriet Walters is such a wonderful actress, surrounded by other great actresses. Love this, thank you for posting.

Wimsey's too camp in this adaptation. A touch too feminine.

The inspector Parker who marries Lady Mary, Lord Peter's sister is younger and handsomer in I. Carmicheal's TV series. It is a little hard to imagine Lady Mary marrying this one; nevertheless I enjoy both series equally. ❤

When will PBS do the entire series? They are doing the Forsyth saga again and Agatha Christie always has one or two new versions coming out. Let’s give Dorothy a chance!!!

This series, and the book, are pedestrian until Pickled Gherkins and especially Peter show up. Wonderful how Sayers communicates their and especially his personalities effecting this transformation. They have something beyond mere charm, although it is charming. It's, especially with Peter, intelligence engaging with the everyday world and something more, something magical. The rising middle class professions had a practicality and earnestness that went back to the Methodist revival from whence they came. A rather serious, no nonsense tradition. Perhaps Sayers is suggesting, through Peter's personality, that the nobility had preserved something in the British character that the rising classes had repressed in themselves. We see it also in Peter's mother and uncle - but not Gerald or his wife. So who knows?

"Launch the LaGonda." Twaddle. Disappointing. A bare minute in, and they really couldn't have found a Mercedes to call Mrs. Murdle? If not, they couldn't have just had Peter say, "Get the car ready"?

In Part One, the actor playing Haviland Martin is listed in the credits as "Romney Marsh"--clever ploy to separate him from Henry Weldon before we discover that they are one and the same. Brits would be suspicious of such a name because Romney Marsh is an actual marshland in Kent and Essex; however, N. Americans of a certain age might remember a Disney film from the early sixties called The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh.

I was dreadfully disappointed that they only did 3 stories in this adaptation. All the actors were excellent. In particular Mr Petheridge. And the production values, music and title sequences perfect.

I am really enjoying this series. It did take awhile to get used to E.P. being used to Ian Carmichael, but like Doctor who the actors change but its still same character.
I have yet to understand what happened or who was killed and buried in the first episode in the beginning.

Read 11 of Sayers' mysteries years ago, whatever I could find, wonderfully well written. I introduced my daughter to Dorothy Sayers by way of the DVD's I had never seen. There were 4 Harriet Vane books and after seeing the first 3 on DVD, we were sorry to find out that the 4th, Busman's Honeymoon, was never made. And never will be - much too politely worded for today's readers.
