I like this optimism, but it is not true for all. Some but not all will pass on their genes to the next generation. There is no cut and dried purpose, it is up to us to find meaning where we can. Sometimes it is easy, sometimes it is hard.

Taking the earliest life on Earth to form about 3.8 -4.2 billion years ago, why is there a problem with consciousness evolving as an evolutionary adaption? If we can't understand the brain, then that is just because of the complexity and the way it is. Life itself evolved to become ever more complex. Processes in the brain are not going to simplify so that we can understand them.

Adding to my previous comment talking about processing occurring in different levels I wanted to say that processes in one level do not directly cause processes in another level but rather allow higher level processes to occur. Individual neurons firing does not create thoughts but rather the construction and processing occurring in the brain allows thoughts to happen. Individual neurons firing are not thoughts but rather allow thoughts to happen. There is no direct cause and effect here. An analogy is a turbine that turns because of flow of water past the turbine. The individual atoms making up the turbine have nothing to do with the turbine turning in response to water flowing; the turbine turning is a consequence of water flowing and the construction of the turbine. In other words, different laws apply.

My thoughts differ. The brain creates consciousness, and the brain creates mind. By brain states we mean physical processes that happen in the brain. The brain states have a different language to mind states. Mind states include abstract concepts that have no analogues in brain states for example emotions are not brain states. This does not mean that the brain does not create emotions; it does create emotions. I disagree with the conclusions presented here. There is a concept of self, and that is what the brain creates when it creates consciousness. We don't have an understanding how, but that does not mean it does not happen. In summary I do not believe consciousness can exist without the brain because the brain creates mind and creates consciousness. I don't think the materialist viewpoint would say mind states and brains states are the same. I do think everything ultimately comes down to physical processes but there is a hierarchy, and different laws and a different language for these laws holds at different levels, and this is evident in nature, in chemistry, in biology and in physics and I believe also it is true regarding the mind - brain problem.

If I am pursuing to reach my authentic self as what I learned in psychology. Could I simultaneously disregard my will and pursue God's will as what I learned in my Catholic religion?

Yeah you COULD say that all these things you don’t understand about the brain came about by a deity, but why would you? It’s just a personal incredulity of yours. Are you unaware that we know how the brain works? Maybe not completely since it’s still a new field and doing some tests would be unethical, but we know how the brain works to such a degree that we can perform surgery on it and even alter how you think and behave using specific chemicals. We know how the brain likely evolved and there isn’t any deity that’s required for it. These events you’re talking about in regard to evolution aren’t random either, as evolution is a process that has selection pressures to weed out detrimental mutations and keep beneficial ones. Finally, we have no reason to believe that everything was made just for us because we’re just that special. No, we’re a highly intelligent species of ape living on a planet that tries to kill he constantly. If everything were made for us, you’d think the universe or even our own damn planet would be more hospitable. Yknow what would really make us think at least the planet was made for us? Having the vast majority covered in water that we can actually drink. But instead we have oceans that are way too salty to drink or we’ll become dehydrated and die, which is even more messed up when you realize that salt is also a critical part of our diet that we need to survive.

Anything to get around the fact we have souls and we are more than our bodies. Our mind, will, and emotions make up our soul, that is something that you can't keep in a physical body. Plants are chemical factories. They are immobile and they communicate through “smell” to gauge weather/resources and competition for them (yes plants can somewhat control the weather, this is how our atmosphere was made). Plants also communicate with insects and my belief is that insects did not even come from the water but from plant life itself, although I could be wrong… Naturally they communicate with those insects with alkaloids (same alkaloids when you are on some heavy psychedelics you are “smelling” the way plants “see” the world, or you at least). Venus fly traps are not even that complex in their relationship with the animal kingdom… they just produce extra sugar for flies and flies are not very bright scavengers so there’s an extra mechanism that traps them… Also any plant that has a defensive adaptation also has an alkaloid that makes that happen and that alkaloid is usually a sought after drug, I wonder what an offensive alkaloid makes the fly trap work? Any shamans here?
