I'll be adding a mini consumer unit to my shed soon, so I am having a look at a couple of videos before I do the donkey work. You've got a lot of exposed copper in that unit. It doesn't have to be pretty, but it should be safe. I'm sure it was tidied up by your Uncle ;) and properly marked after this video was recorded.
@CanOfRabbitHoles3 ай бұрын
That's correct yeah 😁 It's a while back now but I think I mentioned in the video it was pointless to do it all, but he was happy everything was in the right place, ready to be sleeved and labelled with no hassle. Glad this helped you! I really wanted Aircon but didn't have the budget.

I think I can see a few issues that might be causing leaks. It's hard to see from the video/images. What's the cutback on that panel? Is the base overhanging the head plate? You foamed/sealed between the panels?
@CanOfRabbitHoles3 ай бұрын
Minimum cutback was recommended to me, I think it was 20mm. The base isn't overhanging the drip edge, but there's a bucket of sealant between the panel bottoms and the drip sill. I had to retroactively take the screws out and pump butyl between the panels once I discovered it was leaky. No one told me about any of these things when I was looking into it. No mentions of butyl tapes etc.
@peterlambert6913 ай бұрын
@@CanOfRabbitHoles there's no mention of butyl tape in any of the documentation I've seen. Where is that mentioned? It does say to double tape and premseal the head plate and ensure the panel is at least flush with the external wall. Preferably overlapping. The minimum cutback is 25mm, however I thought that was for steep, overlapped pitches. I was sure 50mm+ was required for 4 degree... Can't find where I read that now. It looks like butyl at the cutback end, on the underside of the upper metal layer is causing water trackback. Are you saying that was added after the leaks started?
@CanOfRabbitHoles3 ай бұрын
@@peterlambert691 yes mate. I'm glad you have found more resources than I did. No more leaks now, and I've since pressure washed the roof to test it :) I have no idea where any of the stuff specifically mentioning butyl is, but it's basically the only correct option as far as I can tell.

@@CanOfRabbitHoles Awesome news, well done. So, it looks like there's two versions, depending on where you get it. You should have used a 100 amp DP main switch and 3 rcbo's they trip on all faults then if there is a fault only one circuit will go off if there is a fault the way you have done the job the 30 MA RCD will trip you will lose power and every MCB will go off

I wonder what the cause of all this might be, do you think you made an error in how you installed it?
@CanOfRabbitHoles8 ай бұрын
I know for certain I did. The problem arises when you don't use butyl tape between the joints and when you install them in the wrong direction. The REASON I made these mistakes? They are present only in the manufacturers specification, they aren't there in the installation guide from the supplier! These are for commercial use and it shows, there are just too many assumptions made that an amateur just wouldn't know about. Totally unsuitable.

Oh no, not another leak! Hopefully sorted now. How is your cladding looking after 6 months? Still a bit on the orange side, or quietening down? I've still to do cladding on my build and was thinking of softwood w. stain for reasons of economy.
@CanOfRabbitHoles8 ай бұрын
Hey ADP! Good to hear from you again! Hope your build is going well! My advice on the softwood is that if you do go for it, the you MUST stain it all over, even in the grooves, and don't use owatrol, since all the shades dyed mine orange, and no, 6 months didn't calm it down. If you remember I stained the backs of mine with bostic bitumen paint and it's a nightmare. The boards cupped and the bitumen got everywhere. Next year when I extend the front into a shed and decking, the first cladding will be removed and we're going to upgrade it. Turned into a false economy for ours sadly
@AnomalousDataPoint8 ай бұрын
@@CanOfRabbitHoles sorry to hear that. A friend of mine recommended 'thermowood' as a reasonably priced cladding material. It does look a good option except none of the suppliers are anywhere close and have a hefty delivery charge!

Hi there. I'm doing the same as you in my shed. I was just wandering with the 2.5mm and 1mm cables coming out of the consumer unit going to the circuits do the glands have to be water tight or snug? It's confusing me because they aren't round so how do you seal them?
@kool-k-kel11 ай бұрын
is the cut back on all sides of the panel or 3 sides?
@CanOfRabbitHoles11 ай бұрын
Just the one. So the 20mm cutback I had is just on the gutter edge, this allows water to drip off, for peace of mind next time I might go for 40mm. Get a quote from panelsell, they will help you immensely and give helpful diagrams!
