Is it not advisable to put my hard earned money in to those stocks only which can survive and grow over long period of time rather than choosing those who ask my attention every 3-4 yrs?

A wonderful discussion that gets deep! Touched on so many important areas about money and life that most people aren’t talking about. It opened my eyes to how I’m not using money as consciously and not being as intentional in my life as I’d like. I also need to have more open discussions about money with my family. Thank you! I’m glad I listened to this!

I was also a student in Brussels in 2000 and maybe can shed a bit of light upon the perspective of your professors. Belgians have been loyal savers, despite the low rates we've had for quite some time. Around 2000 a very promising company, Lernout & Hauspie had convinced quite a few head of households to invest in their business (speech recognition, revolutionary at the time). The heads of the company appeared in media, talk shows, the pride of the nation. Until 2000 when the Wall Street Journal had investigated them. They had a lot of irregularities, shell companies that were reporting fake revenues. So those heads of households, having tried their one shot at the stock market, found themselves betrayed by a Belgian version of Enron. The result is that even to this day, Belgians kept saving. Good thing that ordering books online is relatively easy these days because books on the stock market are rare in our book shops. So you were fortunate to find a copy of One up on Wall Street here (which is a great book).

Sad to see Bryon falling into the pitfalls of liberalism. Irony is it will destroy all of the things he writes about-the depth of different cultures will be destroyed by multiculturalism, excellence will be destroyed by equity, and the exceptionalism of western society will be eroded by mass immigration and the pleasantries of high culture will be destroyed by sustainability. What's the phrase? The path to hell is pathed with good intentions? Ah well maybe it will be the elite that manage to go unscathed and only us working class will be dragged to the bottom. We already cannot find 100% cotton clothes anymore....even at brooks brothers.

The average home price in 2000, adjusted is $216,592. In 2023 it's around to $400k+. Please tell Jacob.

If his "consumer society is four times more wasteful than it needs to be" statement is also 23 years old (like the $6k/yr) then he can bump that up as well. We really shouldn't have guests who keep repeating information that is 10-30 years old. His blog is the same articles on loop since 2013.

I'd say you can live on about $15K a year so we are maybe twice as wasterful as we need to be. I agree with his point but I think he underestimates the amount you need to spend to live.

@@jackoliniI believe he himself spends less than $6k per year, in 2024. While living in Chicago. So, it's definitely possible. Requires some capital (owning a place to live) though.
@jackolini
@jackolini 4 ай бұрын
@@mav45678True, if you don't have a mortgage, you can probably live on less than $15K. But I can't imagine property taxes in Chicago to be less than $6K per year. Even if he pays $3-4K a year in property tax, I doubt he lives off of $2K. I bet a more realistic amount to live on is $15-20K per year.

@@jackoliniHe's living with his wife, who contributes half of the property taxes. That makes it possible. The detailed breakdown of his recent spending is somewhere on the ERE forum.

$6,000 was the result of a calculation done 23 years ago! He's been on several podcasts this year and still keeps repeating the $6,000 value. At least do an inflation adjustment which brings it up to $11,000. I would increase it even further given the fact that most things have increased in price well above general economic inflation, health care and housing being huge examples.
@dorian3848
@dorian3848 7 ай бұрын
He actually says why he doesn't include inflation in the calculation in the podcast. The number comes from the amount an average human could spend. While inflation goes up, the world population also goes up which pretty much cancels out. The whole concept is not meant be to a budget - even if he used it back then and it worked out . Sure it's probably impossible to live off of 6k in the US nowadays, but again, it's an average, not something meant for the US alone. If you take 6k and live in poorer countries it's a lot. Heck even here in rural Austria / Germany I can find places where I could live somewhat normally on 6k

Interesting talk! A few questions. -- Was it the national party that confiscated his grandma's land or the communist party? which year was this? Did she manage to move the soil somewhere else or just piled it up on the side? Just curious. -- What lessons or legacy did Chris learn from his father rather than Munger and Lynch? thank you!
