In E TN, too. I inherited many daylillies from William R. "Bill" Pate, who was the daylilly man on 107 by the Nolichucky River. All of his hybrids are named, "Nolichucky ...". I loved him so much. I was 40ish and he was in his 80s and we were best friends. He named one after me, "Nolichucky My Friend John". I had over 50, but moves, time, kids, life... only about 10 remain here. I gave about 25 to a dude at a local nursery last yr. Nice.

Is it ok to divide a plant in the fall ? Do you ship in the late summer?
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies 2 күн бұрын
We ship through October. Fall is actually the best time to divide daylilies. Dividing in fall gives them plenty of time to get reestablished in time for summer bloom. One thing to consider: you'll want to divide and transplant at least one month before your first projected killing freeze. Here's a video that might be useful to you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8Bxo7uZxMebo58.htmlsi=5DWq0JUikzloYASZ

Do I have to chop down the plants' green foliage in order to transplant?
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies 3 күн бұрын
Not at all! We do it because 1) the foliage can get in the way of our shovel (so it's hard to see where we want to dig and 2) the foliage will get ragged and brown once you transplant it so trimming beforehand makes it look neater while it's growing back out/greening up.

daylilies are TOUGH. i bought a bunch of "leftover" daylilies from my local garden center in their end of season sale- so they were sitting in pots, in the full sun, until they finished blooming (or got broken or damaged) and then shoved aside in the "clearance" sale... i must have purchased 5 of them and i admit i didnt really do much besides shove them in the ground and water them. they all came up the next year looking gorgeous.

One fall I dug out a clump of the orange ones and just left them out of the ground and forgot about them over the winter here in zone 6b MA. In spring I noticed the clump and it had green leaves starting. So I had to let them live and they have been happily growing in the ground for a few years now

Anyone wondering... the daylilys are very tough plants. The golf course replaced the entrance way 3 years ago and left about 50 stella's dug up, uncovered, unwatered, left out for dead... they planted them 18 months after sitting above the ground, surviving 2 Chicago winters and they're all alive and flowering right now.

Gorgeous! But with the plants so close together, how do they get in there to weed or clean up?
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies 7 күн бұрын
One potential benefit of planting closer together is that when the foliage does fill in, it helps to keep weeds down. However, the daylily foliage can be easily pushed aside to weed if necessary.

That's Wild Horses. That picture was sent to us by a customer and we think it's just gorgeous! Wild Horses is one that can look nearly creamy white to almost pale yellow depending on soil quality and available sunlight. We think the contrast with the dark purple eyezone looks fabulous either way (but then again, we love eyezones!)

Great video! The one question I have is if I divide the day lilly but want to transplant it a week later will that be okay? How long can the clump be stored out of ground before replanting?
@OakesDaylilies
@OakesDaylilies 11 күн бұрын
It's best to divide and plant the same day if possible. However, if you absolutely can't get both done the same day or the next, the next best thing is to temporarily plant it in a pot and water it well. If you don't have a pot available, it's possible to leave it unplanted for a week, but you'll need to move it to a dry, cool place that's out of direct sun. Once you plant it, make sure to give it plenty of water-and keep it watered-until it begins to green back up.
