My brother and I skied this when we were six or seven years old and fearless. I still remember it vividly, even in my 40s. The top section is sheer ice, ridiculously steep and very gnarly. It gets nicer from about a third of the way down.

Skied it in 1983. They opened the course right after the race was over and allowed the public on it! Probably the most exhilarating run of my life which included heli -skiing in Utah! It was STEEP and icy! Todd Brooker of Canada won!

Judging by the excitement Klammer and Maier triggered, these two stand alone indeed. Hoever, one should not forget about Tomba, Zurbriggen or riders from earlier periods like Sailer. Other than that, my guess is that a Maier pre accident would still dominate today.

A wonderful video, but one suggestion. The text/editing on the screen showing course location were blocking the downhill view. Perhaps you could re-do the video with these annotations at the bottom of the screen?

I have walked down that course (in summer ofc) and no camera angle does any justice to how steep it is. At some spots the trail left the course to zig-zag its way down, in other places it was not a trail but stairs. It was a great experience and something to remember when I watch those skiers!

For all of you saying that this is the toughest course in the world: it IS extremely tough to RACE this course (speeds of 140kmh, total time under 2 minutes). But it's entirely possible for an advanced-intermediate skier to get down the course. I know, because I've done it - took about 10 minutes (not 2!) but I was on telemark (free-heel) gear.
@chrisor7164
@chrisor7164 7 ай бұрын
Of course you can ski it down without problems. But not under race conditions. For the race they prepare the slope with salt and water to get it extremely icy. With the ski edges of a normal ski you will never be able to hold the line there. This are completely other types of ski and not made for hobby skiers. The professionals will feel at some parts centrifugal forces with nearly 3.1 g, jump around 60-80 meters and go highspeed until 140 km/h. You can never compare that with a tourist drive and normal preparations. I recommend the movie "Streif - one hell of a ride"

@@chrisor7164I totally agree. I too have skied some Olympic down hill runs, as you say like a tourist. I remember thinking, how the hell do they do this. Then again I am just an amateur and they are highly trained, top athletes. Me not so much. Take care

Stupidest comment ever. Every downhill course in the world is made up of mostly ‘blue’ runs with a few ‘black’ pitches. The hard part is going 140 kph without killing your self. Anybody can ski down these courses, same as anybody can drive around Monaco. But only a few can drive at F1 speed around Monaco.

I have bombed down all the men's downhill runs in Canada.... without gates. It is always terrifying and I slow down a lot to not lose control. Add gates with a specific course, the off camber turns and match the speed these guys go... it's just incredible!
