I can easily imagine an oversized version of this with additional internal grooves in each individual contact joint surface with captive ball bearings for even lower friction (and better repairability) in an exoskeleton-type robot, with additional locking mechanisms and damping as well as larger endplates for additional lateral rigidity.

Dude dude dude I have seen this video a lot and I just gotta say finally. This looks kinda stupid man. There absolutely has to be a better way.

Super cool! I definitely want to follow the progress on this so I happily subscribed. Was the current size of the leg in the video the same size as what the final project will have?

Isn’t it just damaging the material’s surface whilst recording the damage it’s doing?

Look at the distance between avian “hip joints.” They are never as far apart as your robot. They are usually very near together. This allows each leg to control balance with very little tipping when transferring weight from one leg to another.

This is a great video and I love it! So it detects motion by silicon 'wobbling'. Then what happens? You said there's capacitive changes, does that mean the output voltage changes proportional to the movement, and that is then sampled? Is that what the graphs show?

Using metals like stainless with bronze as a bearing surface for both joints is not a bad idea! It would sure add to the life cycle.

How do you measure thickness in nanometers of deposited materials?
@BreakingTaps
@BreakingTaps 2 күн бұрын
My sputter machine has a sensor called a quartz crystal microbalance, which is sensitive to a few nanometers. It's basically a thin quartz crystal that is oscillating, and as material builds up on the surface the oscillation changes. The change is very predictable based on deposited thickness, so you can use it as an in-process monitoring sensor for how much material has been deposited.

This is a lovely technique. The smallest commercially available ball bearings I'm aware of are those for model trains. Past that it gets into jewells for clockwork.
